Alright everyone, with a new battle system info forum, there's alot more for us to do. As such, I will be requiring a few things from now on.

FIRST: If you stumble upon a dev post in the battle system forum, click quote, copy the quote, and PM it to me and Omny. I am going to amass a large collection of quotes to use.

SECOND: I want everyone agreeing on opinions about the battle system. I want you to check in here for anything you can before going into the battle system forum. I will be using the second and third posts to store information.

THIRD: We will be hosting a faq within the battle system forum, as such, I would prefer that everyone begin IMMEDIATELY sorting through any information they possess to submit.

Get the information in NOW. Until further notice, the chuunin exams will be postponed, if you want them running again, or want to be considered higher among the applicants, get to work.

There won't be Player versus Player combat upon the release of the System.

Ring wise, it's probable that the tutorial will grant the users a starting ring and they will go on from there. Monsters in the game will drop rings and other items as well.

FAQ on MMO Battle System

(Best one that I have seen so far. Will keep you updated. Here's some of the information I've
found so far.)

1) When will it be released?

Last announced time was August. Subject to Change.

2) How will we battle?

The Battle System will use a Ring system.
You can have a total of Eight rings equiped, four on each hand.
These rings are your attacks and abilities.
Ranging from Fireballs, invisibility, healing etc.

3) Can I use my weapons (Like the Ninja Star)?

The weapons currently on Gaia will not effect gameplay what soever.
This was decided so the rich Gaians wouldn't be better then the poor
just because they can afford all the weapons.

4) Will it be fullscreen?

DEV's have not yet stated a yes or no to this.
Best guess is yes, or it will have an option for Fullscreen or Windowed.

5) Will we have to download it?
Current information suggests its an off-the-site MMO, you will have to
download the updates like most MMO's (Update process) But you don't
really have to download it to your desktop.

I'll send more as I find more.

Anime Lover Shugo
Hey, I got some info stuff for the guild heres the quote i got from the forums: http://www.gaiaonline.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=29129041
Yuyin
OK so I made this thread so the questions will be organized and easier for the Mods/Devs to answer. Please state your question here and I will post it for the Mods/Devs and others to see. This is not a Garentee that your questions will get answered, just a way for people to see what has been answered or not. Please to not repost a question.

The questions:

Rings:

-Do we start off with starter rings? if so do we get to choose which rings?
or are they chosen for us?

Devolopment:

-How do i get on the system to do it?
It's not up yet.

-When will it be up?
At the Anime Expo they said that it'll be released in August of this year.

Monsters/loot:

-Will drops be MCs or other items?
It's very unlikely that Monthly Collectibles will be dropped from the moneys, however it was mentioned that monster will drop items for the battle system, such as rings and other goodies that may be sold.

-If we kill a monster is there a possiblity that we can get as a pet?
In the future, perhaps, though I do not believe it'll come out with the initial release.

Other Questions:

-How will we be able to battle?
You character will be able to wear 8 "Rings" at any given time. Four on each hand. These rings are your abilities. Each ring does something, such as healing, fireballs, invisibility. Etc. These are activated by clicking on them from a toolbar.

There will be a tutorial mode from Farmer Bill's ranch that gets you used to the battle system and what not. After that, it's likely that users will be able to venture out from the farm and go exploring in different areas, such as Barton Forest and Durem Cliffs (convention information - subject to change).

-Will the item's we're wearing effect us in anyway?
No. This was decided against because it would allow all the rich Gaians to be better then regular players.

I'm not so sure about this personally, but I believe the rings will hold the majority of influence on the actual battle system. There was some mention of other items affecting the game, but those may be exclusive to the Battle System. Again, this is unconfirmed and more of my opinion. (Airez)

-Will we be able to battle other players?
Currently not yet.

-What might some of the quests be like?
There will most likely be a great deal of collecting quests from mobs, but the developers have hinted that not all quests will revolve around this ideal. Many quests may involve the storyline too, and the development team looks eager to add bits of storyline and lore into the actual Battle System.

-Will we be able to have like "sidekicks? ((like useing our gwee or mochi to help us battle))

-Will it just be battling or will it eventually hold more than just battling? ((like maybe other skill building like maybe farming, crafting items, or mining skills, or something to that effect.))
Eventually, I believe there may be changes. While some MMO games have put little focus on crafting (Maple Story and the sort), the GAIA Battle System may put some details such as Fishing / Garbage collecting that may influence items being made. It's speculation, again, but I see that as being highly possible.

-Will we be aloud to get in partys?
If so will the experience for the rings and stuff be spread through the party?
If so again how many will be aloud in one party.

-Will Zombies (grombies ) have any powers in the Battle system?
Will we be able to die? or be defeated since were zombies, and zombies can't die.

-Will aliens have any powers or anything?

I can not answer any of the questions!!! I am not a mod or developer!Just the questions that are obviose(sp?).

When will it be up?

Only the administrators and developers know this.

-Will drops be MCs or other items??

It's very unlikely that Monthly Collectibles will be dropped from the moneys, however it was mentioned that monster will drop items for the battle system, such as rings and other goodies that may be sold.

-Will we be able to battle other players?

Initially, the game will be PvE (People versus Enviroment), but PvP might be an opinion at a later date. We'll just have to wait and see.

Upon initial release, I seriously doubt it. But again, this is subject to change in future fix / patches for the game. 3nodding

-Will it just be battling or will it eventually hold more than just battling?

Eventually, I believe there may be changes. While some MMO games have put little focus on crafting (Maple Story and the sort), the GAIA Battle System may put some details such as Fishing / Garbage collecting that may influence items being made. Other than GAIA gold, there is very little to no chance that the Battle System will require you to pay any real-life currency.

1. Does anyone have any idea when the battle system comes out?(this is a commonly asked question)
The ETA is currently in August, though a definate date has not been set yet.

2. Will there be other items besides rings?(armor and stuff)
Perhaps, perhaps not. Currently, it does not look like armor and other gear will be added to the Battle System initially, but this is subject to change.

3.How will the navigation work out?
SPECULATION: Chances are the moment system will work very similarly to GAIA Towns. Also, I imagine there will be a map for the Battle System for quick navigation from area to area.

4.Can you use pets to help fight?
Initially, it's doubtful pets will be added for fighting, but this is subject to change as well.

Qixter
We like backstory. We like it a lot. In fact, we're going to marry it.

Okay...anyway...what I meant to say is that we like backstory because (whether you like to follow the stories or not), creating that backstory lets us create a world that hangs together more believably and creates situations which are understandable for everyone, even intuitively, without talking to anyone in the world.

Does that make sense? Even if you don't follow the stories yourself, the simple act of us forcing ourselves to create fiction that hangs well together should theoretically create a world that is more believable to you as you move through it.

Are we trying to create a version of reality in Gaia? No way. Gaia is a crazy place with tons of variety, and lots of fun because of that...but when we create a backstory to explain much of WHY Gaia is the way it is, then we create a foundation that we can extrapolate from, that allows us to make an interesting world that makes sense *from that world's perspective*.

Okay...I'm getting pretty long-winded here...but I hope you see now why we go through the effort of creating such stories.

-- Q.

Qixter
The Battle server design is completely different from that of our previously released games. Just FYI. They are designed to hold a LOT more people effectively.

As for the comment about "four years in development", let me try to clarify that a bit. Gaia has *talked* about a Battle system for three years or so, but they hadn't actually been doing more than *talking* about it for a good chunk of that time.

About a year ago, a few people were committed to the idea and they started creating the bare-bones foundation for such a system.

But it was only a few months ago that the project got green-lit to a full team and the company started putting major effort behind it.

So we still have a good ways to go, but we're cranking away at it now. We do have some folks on the team experienced with this type of game and we hope to have a smooth launch. We'll see.

Just wanted you all be aware.

-- Q.

Qixter
If you think those are our toughest monsters...then you'll be really easy to impress later on...

As someone guessed earlier, those are monsters from some of our earliest areas. There *are* reasons why they look the way they do...but we won't be explaining those reasons until we release backstory elements later on. (Sorry.)

-- Q.

Qixter
Howdy folks,

Just a few quick things:

1) We won't be using existing items for game purposes within Battle. Why? Because one of the basic elements of Gaia itself is that avatars can look like anything they WANT to look like and many users identify with that look. We do not want to force people to wear armor and use huge weapons in order to play Battle...so those items do not have stats so that players can keep their current avatar look, but still have fun within Battle.

2) The rings have very cool effects. Some of you have mentioned you would like to "whupass" when fighting. You will. It's very visual.

3) In many ways, rings = skills. When you swap rings on your avatar, you are swapping out the skills you can use during (and between) combats. So the ring system is extremely flexible and allows you to really customize what kind of character you would like to play...even changing between missions, if you so desire.

We have lots more information to roll out about rings. The stuff you've seen already is really just the tip of the iceberg. Stay tuned to learn more when we roll out that info and you'll have plenty of time to decide how well you like it later on.

-- Q.

Qixter
Keep in mind that this is only the first public release of some of our monsters. There are many still to come...and some are quite a bit darker/scarier.

Gaia is a really varied world, and there are lots of things to encounter in different locales.

You'll see. wink

-- Q.

Qixter
(responding to the original post)

If what you mean by "Will Battle be good?" is "Will Battle be just like Runescape?" then the answer is "no".

If you really meant "Will Battle be good?" then the answer is an unqualified "yes".

The game's going to be a blast...and you'll get to scratch many of the itches you currently satisfy with Runescape...but it's going to be a different kind of experience than RS.

-- Q.

Qixter
I'll stick this in a sticky post sometime soon, but for the meantime...

...Battle will not launch with PvP in it.

HOWEVER...I'm (personally) a gigantic fan of PvP. (I Produced games like "PlanetSide" and "Tribes 2" as well as working on lots of other action games.) We *will* add PvP to the game...but not until after launch.

Why? Mostly because this is Gaia's first big MMO experience and we want to ensure that we get the Player-vs-Environment stuff right first...and then we'll add PvP after that.

Will PvP be an afterthought or a "tack-on" job? No way. It's being *designed* now...it just won't be implemented until later.

-- Q.

Qixter
Negativity isn't usually useful, but on the other hand, there's no particular reason for anyone to believe that Gaia can pull off an MMO. After all, we haven't done one yet, right?

Well...only sorta right. We've hired experts that know about MMOs and their architecture. Some of them have even launched successful MMO games.

Gaia has learned a LOT about servers in the past few years and we're growing in that area with new people and equipment constantly.

And you already like the Gaian world...so fleshing that out and making it come to life is something you already want to see, right?

Making a game *is* extremely hard. The average AAA-quality game now takes about two years, 20-30 people, and 10-15 *million* dollars to make. (Many MMOs and high-caliber projects, like "Halo"-style games take even greater sums of cash and have MUCH bigger teams.) All for one game. And if that game's not an MMO, you're probably done with it in no more than a few weekends.

On the other hand, we've got a good team here. As we release more info about the game over time, we hope you'll be able to see the results of that team's efforts and perhaps, just perhaps, we'll be able to convince you to give it a try. It really should be fun.

Time will tell.

-- Q.

Qixter
I can absolutely guarantee that existing weapons won't do anything when Battle launches...BUT...

...I really like the idea of a system that rewards weapon users with unique special effects when certain rings are used.

That definitely won't be in the game at launch, but I'm putting it on the "list of good ideas" for post-launch improvements.

Nice idea!

-- Q.

Qixter
This won't give you all the details you might want, but:

* Rage XP (with each individual ring) is a "character attribute". In other words, you can sell that ring you were using, and then pick one up again later, and you'll still have exactly the same Rage XP that you had when you sold the old one. Conversely, the person that buys your ring will be starting at zero Rage XP, unless they've used such a ring previously.

* It's QUALITY that is something you can upgrade on a ring. The higher Quality a ring is, the bigger the effect of the ring becomes. Rings sold with high Quality are high Quality to any user that tries to use them.

* There are XP thresholds you have to have in order to equip a very high Quality ring. I won't get into the details, but basically, you have to learn to use a ring for a while at lower Quality levels before you can master the skills needed to use the really purified ones. Make sense?

-- Q.

Qixter
Just to say it once officially...we're not announcing launch dates yet.

Sorry. We will do so...but not yet.

Regarding Rings, is there any form of synergys? Like equipping Ring A, and Ring B, produces an effect that neither alone produces?

We don't have any planned to produce a new effect when ring A and B are equipped. But, we do have plans to enhance the existing effects when particular sets of rings are equipped. We've talked about totally new effects, but if those happen it'll have to wait till a post-launch update.

Quote:
Regarding Rings, what sorts of effects do the rings cover, purely attacks, are they buffs/debuffs, or even straight stat boosts for simply equipping them?

Rings cover everything. All kinds of buffs and debuffs, utility skills like stealthing or teleporting, summoning skills, etc. Some will cause effects simply by equipping, some have to be used.

Quote:
Regarding our characters, are we going to have base stats without rings, or does EVERYTHING come from rings?

There will be base stats, but rings will pretty much be the only thing that modifies the base stats. With a couple exceptions that you'll learn more about.

Quote:
Regarding the system itself, do each of the rings have a distinct effect, or is there an actual formula used to calculate hit chance, damage, etc. If so, can you give it to me directly?
Each of the rings is pretty distinct. There are some formulas used to balance the rings, but no I can't give those out. Even if I were allowed, I'm not the one working on them.

Quote:
Regarding the monsters, can you tell me the total you have planned so far, and any that weren't listed on the NPC's page?

I don't work with the artists, so I'm not the most updated person. I hear new ideas pretty much every week, but I probably shouldn't be talking about unimplemented ideas, in case they don't happen xp

PM me when you post your FAQ and I'll try to add more if I have time.

I was hoping for one-on-one combat as well as the regular system, but maybe they will add it after the first released is done and the bugs are fixed.

The Ring System is interesting from what I've read so far. I'm hoping to get the invisibility ring, but I'm sure that will not be a starter ring.

Monsters

After you look at these monsters, you may wonder “how did these creatures get created?” or “why choose these monsters?” and the answer to those questions will have to be (for now), “we can’t tell you that yet.” The reason we can’t tell you is that it has a lot to do with the backstory and fiction for the game…which we are not releasing still for quite some time because we want to keep it as a surprise.

But trust us, there *is* a backstory that explains our madness. Custom
These are some monsters from the first areas you’ll encounter within the game.

Fluff: It doesn’t seem to matter how often you harvest these cute little critters for their cotton fluff, they just seem to appear again from nowhere, like dust bunnies under a bed.

Garlic: This “stinking rose” has a tendency to belch excessively on anything that startles or annoys it.

Alarmskeeter: Combining an alarm clock with a mosquito left the world with a critter that possesses the two most annoying sounds in the universe. The Alarmskeeter uses its highly irritating alarms and buzzes to aggravate a target’s inner ear and drive it mad.

Laceback Bootsnake: Yes…this creature seems to have once been a rubber boot. And yes…it seems to now be a snake. But it’s NOT “a snake in my boot”…so don’t say that.

Clutch: It used to be a lady’s handbag, but the handles became wings and now it flaps about like a bat. Never touch a lady’s clutch. It’s just not polite. And it bites.

OMG: The OMG has all the sympathetic, likeable qualities of a hungry shark. It uses its tail like a whip and it’s a tough cookie, besides. A nasty bit of work, they are.Custom
NPCs

Here are a few details on some of the NPCs you’ll encounter right after you start the game.

Rancher Bill: Bill runs a farm and ranch to the west and south of Barton Town. He’s been here for years and has quite the extended family working the ranch along with him.

Purvis: The spectacularly dense, but amazingly strong son of Rancher Bill. Purvis’s hobbies include carrying cows for distance (he puts them over his shoulders like a yoke) and driving fence posts for speed (he holds them still with one hand while he drives the post into the ground with his other fist).

The Conductor Family: There was once a train engineer with a very happy wife and a tremendous number of sons and daughters. The mother didn’t have a very creative imagination and named all the children with rhyming names. Years later, the engineer ended up running the entire Barton Railway and eventually his kids took over the family business. They’re all nice folks, but keeping them separate in your head can be quite the chore.Custom

Custom
Battle Rings

What are they?
Firstly, Gaians have three fingers and a thumb on each hand. Therefore, a Gaian can wear up to eight rings at any one time (four on each hand).

Each Battle Ring is, essentially, a skill for your character. (For example, you might get a Ring that lets you throw fireballs at range, or turn invisible, or get faster, or project a force field, or…well…almost anything.)

So, you can wield up to eight skills at any one time. Some skills are passive (always on) and some require activation (like when you attack a monster).

You can only change your rings when you are within a “Moonfield” (the name of that object might change, but that’s the name for now). There are fictional reasons for why you can only change Rings in a Moonfield, but let’s avoid fiction for the moment. In a nutshell, what this means is that you can’t just swap out your “skills” at any moment, but it’s still pretty easy to customize your character to fit any group you want to join…depending on the number and quality of Battle Rings you possess.

Yes…there *are* mechanics in place that will tend to encourage folks to try out “sets” of powers and possibly even a few penalties that lessen the power of your abilities if you try to be too much of a “jack of all trades”. But we’ll go into those details in a future info release.

How do you get Battle Rings?
The obvious answer is…from loot. When you defeat opponents, they will drop treasure items ("loot") that usually do NOT contain Battle Rings, but sometimes you'll get lucky.

When you fight against powerful opponents ("Bosses") as well as completing major quests you may also be rewarded with new Battle Rings.

Players can trade rings to each other, and the Marketplace is always an option, but the in-game stores (like "Barton's Boutique") will not buy or sell Battle Rings.

How many can you possess?
As many as you desire. (Well…okay…as many as you can stick into your Ring inventory and in your Storage on the main site. In other words, many…but not an infinite amount.)

How much are they worth?
That’s up to you. Battle Rings will be fairly rare loot drops, but there will be enough of them that you will eventually find yourself with a surplus of rings that you’re not interested in ranking up. Watch the Marketplace and figure out what those rings are selling for…and then sell them for around that much, if you so desire.

How do you get better with them?
You accumulate experience with each individual ring as you use it. Thus, we track the “Rage XP” that you’ve accumulated with a Battle Ring to determine the level of experience, or “Rage Rank” that you have with that ring.

Once you get a higher Rage Rank (RR), you can activate that ability at a higher effect level, which can be extremely advantageous to you. You start at RR1 with a ring, and can work your way up to RR4 at the maximum.

Only Four Rage Ranks? That Doesn’t Seem Like Much Advancement Potential!
Fear not! Rings can be upgraded by infusing special items found throughout the world into them. We’ll discuss “upgrades” in a future info release, but you can continuously power up your Rings over time as your character matures and becomes more seasoned through adventuring.

What is Ring Fu?
Quite simply, “Ring Fu” is a total of all the Rage XP that you have earned on every Ring that you have ever used. Ring Fu is used for several things, but in general, it’s a quick way of seeing how seasoned you are when compared to other characters. It’s also used to determine when you are veteran enough to use high-quality rings, and a few other minor things.

I have a MILLION other Questions? Can I ask them now?
Yes, you can. We have some information reserved for future info installments, but please ask your questions in the (Gaia Online MMO “Battle”) forum. (Brand new!)

We’ll browse through that forum regularly and answer questions. Don’t be too put off by how often we have to say things like “We’ll be announcing that later on”, but we’ll try to get you as much information as we can in the meantime.

And if you have suggestions, then by all means, lay them on us! We love ideas!
