Beginner's Grunge Sig Tutorial

Tutorial by : Doctor Smith
Skill Level : Beginner

First you're gonna want to create a new document of a good sig size. I'm going to use 400x125
User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

Next make sure you have two layers and fill Layer 1 with black and make sure that you're on layer two.

Get out your favorite grunge or even fractal brushes and use ure white and go to town. Don't paint it all white, so that there's some detail in there.
User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

Next make a third layer and do what you did on layer 2, except this time, use black.

Now, find yourself a good render to use. I used this one.

Copy and paste it in. Most of the time, renders are much larger than your sigs and they'll come out like this.

Well, that's not what we want, so let's go to EDIT>FREE TRANSFORM (CTRL+T) and choose a corner. Hold down shift and resize it until you're happy. Then drag it where you want and hit enter.

If you don't feel like hitting enter, you can just click on another tool, in which case you'll get this message, in that case click Apply. Or if you're not happy click cancel and you can keep working on it or Don't Apply and it'll reset back to how it was.
User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

Now, Duplicate (LAYER > DUPLICATE LAYER) your render layer and hide the top one by clicking on the little eyeball next to it.
User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

Here's where things are getting interesting. You want to make sure the visible render layer is highlighted and go to FILTER > BLUR > MOTION BLUR and set it to the below settings.
User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

Now switch to the move tool (the cursor with the cross) and hold down the alt key and drag and drop the blurred render all over the sig. This'll creat tons of layers. Don't worry, this is what we want. Do this until you're satisfied that the colors of the render is covering nicely and then click on the topmost blurred layer in the layers pallette. now hold shift and scroll down and click on the bottom most blurred render layer, highlighting all the blurred render layers and hit CTRL+E which will merge all of them. Now hit CTRL+F to blur them together and set their blending mode to Color.

You should wind up with something like this
User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

You can now make your unblurred render layer visible again.

Now, create some text on your sig with your name or whatever and place it where you want. Make sure it's color is white and it's above all the other layers. Double click it's layer in the layer pallette or go to LAYER > LAYER STYLE > BLENDING OPTIONS and use the following settings for it's blend mode and outer glow.

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

Now duplicate the text layer and set the duplicate text layer's blending mode to Overlay.
User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

Now, Ctrl+Click on your render layer's thumbnail to select it and go to SELECT > MODIFY > FEATHER (ALT+CTRL+D) and set it to 15 or so) and click the "Add Layer Mask" button at the bottom of the layers pallette.
User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

Finally, create one more layer at the very top and hit CTRL+A to highlight everything. Hit D to select Default colors and Go to EDIT > STROKE and use these settings to create a basic border around the sig.
User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

You should come up with something like this.
User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

You can also use the same outer glow effects we used on the text to do this with the border.
