This is the thread for Ayumi Hamasaki.

Ayumi Hamasaki is a J-Pop singer and song-writer under the Avex Trax label although most of her vinyls were released under the Rhythm Republic label. A former model, she was raised in a single-parent family, and was rebellious growing up. She eventually dropped out of high school, only to be discovered by chance at a karaoke night. Despite unsuccessful first single and album under the Nippon Columbia label in 1995 (both of the rap genre), she debuted in the pop scene with poker face under the Avex Trax label in 1998 and thousands of fans attest to her attractiveness and musical potential.
Since LOVE ~destiny~, nearly every one of her singles has landed in the top three, helping to set her status as a successful singer-songwriter in stone. Ayumi has a large collection of albums available on the Avex Trax label, including some remix albums that provide a slightly more enjoyable dance experience for those so inclined. Her large fanbase and regularly strong sales would suggest that she's something worth listening to. Ayumi is also the all-time 4th best-selling artist in Japan and the highest selling solo and female artist in Japan. Ayumi is also the only solo artist to have sold 20 million singles in Japan. She has worked with a diverse selection of companies, and has promoted many products. Panasonic is currently at the top of the list. She had her own TV show called "AYU READY?" and a doll called ayupan.
Ayumi has sold over 45,528,000 copies in Japan alone. She currently has 27 #1 singles (15 consecutive) and 12 consecutive #1 albums. She was the 39th biggest taxpayer in Japan for 2002 and 37th for 2003, she once accounted for 40% of her label's income.

Biography.
Hamasaki Ayumi continues to be one of the biggest earners in Japanese entertainment, but it wasn't always so great. Hamasaki's father left when she was around three and she hasn't seen him since. She grew up in a single-parent household but was mainly raised by her grandmother because her mother was almost never at home. She started modeling for a local bank at the when she was nine. At the age of fifteen she moved to Tokyo because she didn't understand her mother's life style. She attempted to become a professional model but she was too short. Then she made several attempts at acting in dramas and movies, but with no real success. She got tired of skipping school and she dropped out when she was around sixteen.
Nothing from Nothing.
In 1995, at the age of eighteen Ayumi attended to sing cover songs in Idol on Stage television programme, then she debuted in the music industry with her single and album, both titled Nothing from Nothing and it did not make it onto the charts. Shortly afterwards, Ayu was dropped by her former record label and agency Nippon Columbia. The album was more a rap styled album than her latter releases. Due to the fact that it didn't reach the charts, it is a largely forgotten album among listeners but is now a collector's item.
avex and poker face.
In 1996 Ayumi attended to the avex owned Velfarre dance club. While dancing a friend encouraged Ayumi to sing at karaoke and there Masato "Max" Matsuura (avex trax's producer) got impressed about her singing and gave his work card if she wanted to contact him. Ayumi forgot about this and then Max phoned Ayumi to offered her a contract, which she turned down. In 1997 Ayumi accepted the deal and agreed to take singing classes but Ayumi did not attend because she found them too strict and rigid. In summer Max sent Ayu to New York for singing lessons again that she enjoyed. "Going to New York promised me nothing in terms of becoming professional. I just had to believe in myself." Ayu said. When she came back to Tokyo Max got impressed about her writing talent and advised her to write her songs lyrics. Her grandmother got hospitalized and the same morning of the recording for the new single titled poker face, she died. It's believed that the cause of her writing talent is that when she was a kid she started to write a diary with her deep feelings about joys and sorrows. Ayu decided to come back with a different style. She decided to go Pop since her first attempt had been a failure. poker face reached #20 on the Oricon Charts and it sold over 43,000 copies.
LOVE ~Destiny~ and A Song for XX.
Following poker face was YOU. It was a ballad and placed #20 on the charts, selling 78,000 copies. With a few songs following after these two, the final single for A Song for XX was Depend on you which she had teamed up with Max Matsuura to produce. It was the theme song for the PlayStation game, Thousand Arms and eventually, it broke into the top 10 category, making her even more popular. In April of 1999, LOVE ~Destiny~ was released, taking Ayumi to the #1 spot for the first time and also the first time to reach a position in the United World Charts being recognized world-wide. This duet with the then lead-singer of the band Sharan Q, Tsunku and brought Ayumi a great deal of attention, which has not yet waned. When A Song for XX came out on January 1, 1999, the album reached the #1 mark on its first week, making it a platinum album. It eventually sold over 1,450,000 copies in Japan.
LOVEppears and Duty.
In 1999 Ayumi had got contracts with different important companies such like HONDA, AUBE and TU-KA increasing her popularity in Japan. In July Ayumi releases her 9th single titled Boys & Girls being her fist million selling single. In November of the same year Ayumi releases her 2nd album titled LOVEppears, a mix of "Love Appears" which cover Ayumi appeared in topless causing controversy. The album reached #1 in Japan and sold over 2,562,130 copies. In September of 2000 Ayumi releases her 3rd album titled Duty which cover followed the panther looking from SURREAL PV. It reached #1 in Japan and sold over 2,904,420 copies, being her best selling studio album ever.
NEVER EVER and A BEST incident.
In March of 2001, Ayu was forced to release another single by avex: NEVER EVER. Ayu was angry with the company's urging and then, after weeks avex trax decided to release a handpicked album. They sent a message to Ayu, to which she replied that it was too early to release the new album. It is generally thought that avex trax wanted to create "competition" with Distance, the long-waited new album of the other face of J-pop; Utada Hikaru. Here is where the supposed rivalry between Ayu and Utada originated. Nevertheless, Ayu agreed to release it, saying that maybe it would be her last chance and that she had to release it or she would be another product of an organization like any other artist. There was high promotion for the album and that month alone Ayu appeared on 40 magazine covers where she was hailed as a fashion leader and thousand of pictures of Ayu crying, as on the cover, appeared in the streets. A BEST sold over 2,800,000 copies in it's first week against Utada Hikaru, it rose to number 1 the next week and has since sold 4,235,887 copies, being her best selling album ever and the second best selling album of the year after Distance. Ayu had many regrets at this point and the only thing she wanted was to leave Avex but she had a long list of concerts to do. In May Ayumi won the "Best Japanese Pop/Rock Artist" award in the World Music Awards. Practicing for the concert Dome Tour 2001 suddenly Ayu disappeared from the stage, where she fainted because of the stress and then she noticed a noise in her left ear that she couldn't hear anything over. Ayu went to a doctor, but they couldn't do anything if she was working with such high decibel concerts. She did the concert anyway with an ear-plug and then she released UNITE!, her 23th single. This was Ayumi's most active year as she released 52 discs altogether (1 best album, 6 singles, 8 re-issued singles, 2 DVD singles, 4 remix albums, 9 remix singles, 2 DVD concerts and 20 vinyls).
Post-A BEST.
A few months after UNITE! she came back with a new PV and single: Dearest. In the PV she explained how she ran from all her problems and then she found her own place. This new single sold more than UNITE!. In December she release a charity single a song is born, a duet with her idol Keiko to raise funds to help the victims of the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, in the USA. In 2002 she released her new album I am... where her high sales in Japan were decreasing but her Overseas sales began to increase. She debuted in Singapore charts at #1 and charted for several weeks, becoming the first Japanese singer to reach #1 and it became the #7 album of the year in that country. The same year she was invited to and attended the MTV Asia Awards 2002 in Singapore where she won the "Most Influential Artist Award" and performed the song M. This was the first time she performed outside Japan. At the end of 2002, Ayu released a new album titled RAINBOW. For promotion, the song with the same name was featured in many TV-CMs promoting the album inside and outside of Japan. Rainbow as track 00 but it isn't actually on the album. It reached #1 in Oricon Chart.
AYU READY?
In 2002 Ayumi was contracted by Fuji Telecasting Co. In December 2nd of 2002 the TV talk show "AYU READY?" started transmitting and was headlined by Ayumi. The ending song for the show was + (more than). In the show Ayumi talks with music artists and perform songs live with them. In the summer season of the show Ayumi filmed it from the "RAINBOW HOUSE", a spa created by Ayu located on a beach near Ayu's birthplace. The show was transmitted every Saturday and consisted of 74 episodes where Ayumi was with more than 60 artists. The show ended in March 20th of 2004.
A BALLADS and Memorial address.
In March of 2003 Ayumi released her 2nd hand-picked album titled A BALLADS because it included only ballads and other songs that were transformed into ballads plus one new ballad song titled Sotsugyou Shashin (Meaning "Graduation Photo") and RAINBOW the song. In the cover she wanted to represent when she had to heal herself "scars" (Problems) and nobody was there to help her. In the PV of RAINBOW we can see her running from herself, then past Ayumi find new Ayu crying and past Ayu dry tear in new Ayu and past Ayu disappears being Ayumi alone again. At the end of the song voices are singing "No rain, can't get the rainbow" a way to her to say that "Nothing can be perfect".It sold over 924,902 copies (only 1/5 of A BEST's sales) and reached #1 at Oricon Charts. In April, Drizzly Records, a German label that had previously released Ayu's vinyls with remixes, decided to release her first single in Germany under the name of AYU, titled Connected. In July of the same year Ayumi released her 29th single titled & and in August she released her 30th single titled forgiveness. In order to celebrate her 30th single, she began a new tour called A Museum, including her best songs from her singles since poker face. In November, Ayumi released her 31st single, No Way To Say and a month after she released her 1st mini album titled Memorial address. The title was in reference to her relationship with her father, who had left home when she was a kid. This album was the first Ayumi album to be released in CD and CD+DVD version. It charted #1 in Japan and #3 in United World Chart and charted for three weeks.
MY STORY events.
In 2004 Ayumi declined to receive a MTV award, then she announced that she would not be accepting any more awards in order to give opportunities to other artists to receive these and allow them grow musically. This was partially because she had noticed that she was receiving the same awards repeatedly. Two months after the release of her 34th single, titled CAROLS, Ayu released her 7th album MY STORY. In this album, Ayumi showed a more rock sound than before. It reached #1 at Oricon Chart and charted for 43 weeks while it reached #3 at the United World Charts and charted for 3 weeks.
(miss)understood.
In April of 2005 Ayumi releases her 35th single titled STEP you / is this LOVE? which reached #1 in Japan and also in United World Charts. In July Ayumi went to Hawaii to record fairyland PV which costed over $2,000,000 (¥240,000,000) being Japan's most expensive PV and World's 8th most expensive music video. In August Ayumi releases her 36th single titled fairyland. In the end of October Ayumi finished song recordings for her new album and then she went to New York to record PVs for her 38th single Bold & Delicious / Pride and do the photoshoots for the new album and ViVi magazine. Bold & Delicious / Pride reached #1 in Japan. Both songs in this single are covers of Sweetbox. In early 2006, Ayumi released her 8th album titled (miss)understood, which reached #1 in Oricon Charts and also #1 in United World Charts. In March she released a new single titled Startin' / Born To Be... and in June she released her 40th single titled BLUE BIRD, which remains her best online-selling single with over 730,000 downloads. In August Ayu flew to Miami to a concert of Madonna and then to Hawaii where she recorded new songs for her next release and done photoshoots for her new 2007 Calender.
Secret.
In November of the same year, Ayumi released her 9th album titled Secret with a new trance and rock sound. At first it was announced to be her 2nd mini-album with 7 tracks only but then she announced on her website that she will be doing overtime in her studio to transform it into a 14 tracks full album. It charted #1 in Japan, China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Singapore and is now her best selling album outside Japan. However, it only charted at #2 on the United World Charts because of the high sales of the new Beatles album. Days after Secret was released, Ayumi attended a special interview for CNN international where she showed her English skills and mentioned a possible tour, saying that she was interested in reaching everywhere her fans were. In December Ayumi attended to the premiere of the movie Confession of Pain in Hong Kong where she participated in the soundtrack. Ayumi left in the middle of the movie because many fans attended to the premiere to see her, causing disorder in the audience.
A BEST 2
Ayumi started 2007 with the announcement of her 3rd "BEST" album titled A BEST 2 and the confirmation of the possible chance of an Asian tour. The tour is called ASIA TOUR 2007 A ~Tour of Secret~. She starts touring in March in Taiwan, in April in Hong Kong and China and in May until June in Japan. She wanted to perform in Singapore but due to problems with the labels of that country she couldn't. The asian concerts include past and Secret's works and the japanese concerts include mostly Secret's works. A BEST 2 is released in two versions; A BEST 2 -BLACK- including rock, painful and dark songs plus one new song titled part of Me and a hidden track. By the other side A BEST 2 -WHITE- including upbeat, happy and light songs plus the live recording of BEST of COUNTDOWN LIVE 2006-2007 concert. The albums topped the pre-orders charts at the first week it got announced and avex created a special site for promoting the albums. All songs in both albums were remastered. The -BLACK- version of the album was first album to not chart #1 in years, it charted #2 because -WHITE- version charted #1. part of Me PV represented Japan in the MTV Buzz Asia 2007.
ASIA TOUR 2007.
When Ayumi arrived Taiwan with her teddy bear fans were waiting for her holding posters and CDs in the airport, she held fans hands and she recieved a rose. The same scenario repeated in Hong Kong and China airports. During the tour Ayumi sang the tour closing song Who..., but this time in Chinese and Japanese. It was the first time that Ayu sang a song in Chinese. During the MC in the concert she talked in Chinese, English and Japanese. Sometimes Ayumi signed autographs and even took photos with her fans. In China, the press much more reserved than in other countries for Ayumi's tour. In Taiwan she did special interviews, and in China she was interviewed at a press conference. It is well known that many well-known artists from the music industry, such as Jolin Tsai and Cyndi Wang, attended the Ayumi concert. In Taiwan and Hong Kong, Ayumi visited fashion stores, and in Hong Kong she spent HK$500,000. In Taiwan the 10,000 tickets for the concert sold out in 2 hours, in Taiwan in 3 hours and China in 6 hours. During the last quarter of the concert, Taiwanese fans sang SEASONS and Chinese fans sang Voyage for Ayu. While she stayed in Taiwan a special edition of Ayupan was released: Ayupan x Hello Kitty, as Ayumi loves Hello Kitty. The concerts consisted mainly of 20 songs. After overseas performances a contest was published in avex site where best questions to Ayu will be asked to her during the MC.
Third Chapter.
In May of 2007 it was announced on her site that her 41st single, glitter / fated would be officially released on July 18th 2007, marking the first time she has released a single since June with BLUE BIRD (1 year and 1 month). It has already topped the pre-order charts on both Neowing and CDJapan. glitter is described as an up-tempo shimmering song, whereas fated is a mid-tempo rock ballad. glitter has already been used in the new Zespri Gold Kiwi commercial (as was her 40th single BLUE BIRD) while was confirmed by HMV that fated will be the theme song for the japanese horror movie Ghost Story. Her website has marked this single as the beginning of her Third Chapter, possibly in correlation with the end of her A BEST 2 era. At ends of May Ayumi flew to Hong Kong in order to record the new PV for her 41st single.
