I am just curious why YOU use Linux. Is there one thing that sticks out for you? I run Linux for Compiz-Fusion's eyecandy. But out of curiosity is it one thing that you love about it, or is it a bunch of things?

I use linux because:
1: Because I can.
2: It is Reliable.
3: I am in total control of it. IT only does what I want and nothing else.
4: Because it allows me to learn new stuff that has to do with administration of Computers.
5: Because I am Comfortable on it. It just feels like home to me.
6: Performance. It just feels more responsive then windows. Transcoding video also seems faster.
7: Did I mention that I can?
8: I Dislike Microsoft's business ethics so I will not support them by purchasing their software. Also I believe in freedom in most software(I believe some software should be closed due to it being more art like. Ex: Games.) I believe it most should be free as in beer and free as in speech.
9: Its easier to fix/setup stuff due to it not hiding crap on me and allowing me to fix stuff without reinstalling.
10: Most Everything on it is free. I need not purchase programs to make my computer usable.
11: Did I mention Cause I can?
I think that covers most of my reasons lol.

I wanted to feel like the computer I was using was a real computer.

Also, college campuses can be a ******** of bad computer hygiene. I didn't want to inadvertently be a part of the problem, and I didn't want a Mac, so.

And finally, I like to support institutions with whose ethics I can agree. Like someone else said, I don't care much for M$'s business practices (or Apple's either, really...'s why I have a Creative Zen and not an iPod), so I want to avoid their stuff as much as possible.

And yeah, because I can. =P

BTW Zher there is already a topic like this in the off topic subforum
PostPosted: Wed Aug 15, 2007 5:03 pm

Why I use linux...
1) I work for an IT section now, and I HATE fixing windows.
2)I love the idea of paying nothing.
3)I love the fact that when it works, it works well.
4)XFCE is the BEST desktop ever, hands down. Mostly becuase you can customize it so much
5)No Spyware/Adware, and little to no viral infections out there.
6)Fun, I mean I spend more time doing new stuff on linux then fixing old stuff on windows.
7)EASY server set up.
cool Every time I log in it doesn't feel like bill gates is rapeing my butthole mad
9)Looks cooler then mac
10)Steve Jobs sucks.

You have a piss poor IT department if all you do is fix Windows.

Windows NT is quite robust, if setup and maintained properly. Then again, that goes for any operating system.

Back to the topic at hand. I use Linux as a firewall. IPCop for those of you that'd like to know.

We run this annoying Novell ZEN works on top of windows to push apps and updates, it also causes conflicts... We are still useing windows 2000! lol I think our xp upgrade is coming soon because they have be beta testing it with all the apps we use when I have down time.... Anyohw I mostly hate outlook. WHY IN GODS NAME DO PEOPLE THINK THAT OuTLOOK PST FILES ARE THE BEST PLACE TO SAVE THINGS!?!?!!!!!!!! lol Nothing I hate more then a broken 2 gig pst file.

I hear that one... Then again most of those problems aren't OS related but user related... And honestly, where would you suggest users store their mail? If you're using Outlook, you're probably using Exchange, and you know full well that every user having a 2 gig inbox on exchange isn't something that's fun. Outlook doesn't allow for non-mounted PSTs for archives, or an Auto-Archive option that creates new ones by date - then, searching them all would be a b***h...

Hate to say it but large PSTs aren't the user's fault if the company has email retention requirements. Outlook simply doesn't accommodate any other options to make them more manageable for the average user.

I totally get why people use pst files to back up mail, but when people are dumb in the way they do backups is what mostly makes me mad. We explain to them "please make a back up pst for your mail, but only mail that is imporant, or needed for your job, if you are finding your pst getting to big please break the pst files up for year or month pending on how much mail you get/need." like no one does that, so I get a call from a frantic user with a corrupted 2 gig pst.... lets just say I am not happy for the 2-3 hours I have to spend trying to archive out old mail from the bad pst.

That sucks, of course things like that will happen, like Murphy's law stats "If s**t can happen, It will".

Good news is that ZEN works is pretty much dead, I don't know how long it will take before its death will show up in the windows world, but openSUSE 10.2 is the last version of SuSE that will use ZEN works because it is just so shitty. Who wants to take 2 hours to try and install updates just to find that one hour and thirty minutes into the update ZMD took a crap in your PC and you update failed.

lol I don't think zenworks will ever leave our network I work for a gov office/indrustal workshop buliding, and we are still on 2000, just getting xp, I don't see them dumping Zenworks in my life time. I find zenworks is useful with getting apps to the people, updates are annoying, it make a boot up take forever, also their imaging took ******** blows too... Ghost is like way faster. -sigh- But I am the lowest of low there so not like I get any say in what goes on.
