We sure don't discuss much.
So here's something to get us going: a rant from Bane!
I hate how people post the "start of their story" and ask for comments. Well, I only hate it when the "start of the story" is a short paragraph.
What the ********? You're not writing a drabble. You're writing a story. And with a tiny paragraph, there's no characters to be developed. There's no sense of place yet. Usually, there's not even any characters introduced.
So why do people do it? Are they that desperate for comments that every paragraph they write requires approval from the Gaian public?

What I hate more is when people are like "rate my story", and then they post a blurb. Something that belongs on the back cover of a book. Wow that's goddamn frickin' amazing, but it doesn't have anything to do with the piece!
I believe people do it because of the whole "i seek approval" thing, or at least they THINK they need to seek approval. neutral

Because really, who needs to actually write real stories when you could write summaries, get bad criticism, and be all "I'm so missunderstood you didn't even read the whole story ohmaigawd you're such a b***h."

Maybe they think it's a really, really good paragraph. And they're insecure. Or something.
I hate, hate, hate it when people post something with bad grammar and many problems, and then when you tell them about it, they get all defensive. "I don't write like this normally, I'm just on my other comp where the story isn't saved!! I'll have you know I have six other drafts of this, and those are alot improved from this!!!"
We can't read your minds, people. Even if it's true, our only impressions of you are your posts. stressed

blue_icicle "I don't write like this normally, I'm just on my other comp where the story isn't saved!! I'll have you know I have six other drafts of this, and those are alot improved from this!!!" I've heard things in that category too much! If you have something better, post it. If not, take your lumps, rewrite it and try again. You never know, criticism, after the holy euphoria that is caused by completing something has died down, usually helps.

If you read the whole story, you would have liked it, of course.

Me: "Well, so far it's not very interesting and this is why etc." Author: "It's just the first chapter!!! You can't judge it from the first chapter!!! It's going to be better later!!" I'm not a mind reader, dammit. How the heck am I supposed to know that your story is going to be super amazing if all I've seen is the sub-par first chapter? And what makes you think I can't judge the first chapter? Why in sam hell would you put it up if you didn't want it read and get feedback?

I dunno, anytime I see "rate" contained within the subject line my fingers get antsy over the "I-t-s-u-c-k-s" keys.

I think that people just post little tiny blurbs because they are lazy. They don't want to post a decent story because that would take too much of their precious time. They say that they have worked a very long time on things just to seem smart and hard working then write a tiny blurb of a story that they have just started writing. If your first chapter is borning then post more than the first chapter so people will actually want to read your story or accept that the particular person who happened to review your story doesn't like it and try to improve.

What they seem to forget, is that if they want better ratings then they should post what they think is the best part of their work. Why present something moderate to be rated? We'll only think it's all they can do. Then they come up with "i can do better than that i can!!11 i just didnt post it!1!"
And then we ignore them rolleyes .

If they don't feel their story is important enough to use spaces and capital letters, why on earth should I think it's important to review it. It's not judging or stereotyping them cruelly due to preconceptions. It's drawing rational conclusions from a helluva lot of evidence.
