NEWS (also seen as News and NewS) is a Johnny's Entertainment group composed of six members (formerly nine). NEWS stands for the four compass directions: North, East, South and West.

Information.
The original nine members of NEWS were handpicked from the larger group of Johnny's Jr. and several smaller groups in September of 2003. Their first single, NEWS Nippon, was released in 2003, but was a limited edition that was only available at Seven Eleven stores and is therefore not counted as their official debut. Instead, their second single Kibou ~Yell~, released in 2004, became known as their debut single. It debuted at number 1 on the Oricon charts and finished the year in the number 13 position. Before this single was released, however, Moriuchi Takahiro left the group and Johnny's Entertainment entirely, bringing the member count down to eight.
From May 2006 the group was temporarily on hold, so that they could reflect on the misdeeds done by some of the members. In late 2005, Uchi Hiroki, 19, was suspended for drinking in public while underage (the minimum age for drinking in Japan is 20). Kusano Hironori, 17, was also accused of drinking but denied the accusation and was not suspended. For a short term NEWS acted with only six members and they released the single Sayaendou / Hadashi no Cinderella Boy, however ultimately it was announced that the group would be put on hold. The group was expected to return in 2007 with all 8 members.
On December 30th, 2006 it was announced that NEWS would be returning as a 6 member group, and would be appearing on Johnny's Countdown 2006-2007. Uchi Hiroki and Kusano Hironori would return as 'trainees', but as of March no news has been heard about them yet. According to fans and websites, the rank 'trainee' is lower than the position of a junior. For their first release after the year long hiatus, NEWS released a single, Hoshi wo Mezashite, as the theme song for the Japanese release of Happy Feet in which Tegoshi Yuya was the voice of the main character, 'Mumble'. After several months of silence on the position of Uchi and Kusano, they appeared as back up dancers in their seniors Shounentai's concert PLAYZONE 2007. Handwritten letters were sent to their fans announcing their return to the stage. Shounentai said in a message on the official website for the play that they hope that both Uchi and Kusano would be able to leave the trainee title in the end of September, when the play ends.

Biography.
Yamashita Tomohisa with Koyama Keiichiro of NEWSYamashita Tomohisa entered Johnny's Entertainment at age 11 in September of 1996. From there he became a very popular Junior, eventually coming to be the leader of the Juniors. He was a member of the group B.I.G. as well as Four Tops, the former hosts of the The Shounen Club television program. He was pulled from Four Tops into NEWS when the group was formed.
In NEWS, Yamashita is often in the front and center as he is the most popular member. Despite this attention he maintains a silly personality which occasionally prompts his band mates to question whether he is actually human or not. He is good friends with Akanishi Jin of KAT-TUN and Jin's family as well as Nishikido Ryo, Shirota Yuu of D-Boys, and Ikuta Toma formerly of Four Tops.
In 2005 he appeared in the drama Nobuta wo Produce with KAT-TUN's Kamenashi Kazuya. The two released a single as the duet Shuuji to Akira acting as their characters from the drama.
During NEWS's hiatus he released a solo single for the drama Kurosagi which sold remarkably well for a solo release. He is also currently enrolled in Meiji University pursuing a degree in Business. He also recently became a regular columnist of Seventeen Magazine.
In summer of 2006 he was put into the promotional group Kitty GYM where he and the Thai duo Golf & Mike were the principal members.
On the 7th of June 2007 there were news about that Kurosagi will be made into a movie and that Yamashita Tomohisa will star again as Kurosaki. Other former cast members will be Horikita Maki and Ichikawa Yui.

Bio.
Koyama is the oldest member of NEWS and is often seen as the mother figure of the group. Before he was in NEWS he was a member of BAD and J-Support, as well as the group K.K.Kity along with fellow NEWS members Kusano Hironori and Kato Shigeaki. As a member of K.K.Kity he was often an announcer and this has carried through to NEWS. Despite this, he only joined Johnny's Entertainment at the beginning of 2001, when he was 17 years old. He is well known for his single eyelids and is often jokingly teased about them.
He is currently attending his final year at Meiji University's Arts & Humanities facility and working in his parent's Ramen shop while NEWS is on hiatus. He has also been participating in dorama.

Masuda Takahisa joined Johnny's Entertainment in November of 1998. Masuda, better known as Massu is known, along with Tegoshi, to be one of the better singers in NEWS and has many solo parts. Some of his solo songs are the Taiko-drum song, Akatsuki and It's Bad. He also participated in the duet piece Sunadokei with Tegoshi and in 2006 released a single as a duet with Tegoshi as Tegomass titled Miso Soup, which was also released in Sweden.

Kato Shigeaki joined Johnny's Entertainment in April of 1999 and was in the groups J-Support and K.K.Kity before he was selected to be in NEWS. He is often recognized as the smartest member of NEWS and also the one with the least self-confidence. He plays guitar and has composed a few songs with Yamashita Tomohisa and Tegoshi Yuya.
Shige is an avid writer and writes his blog from the perspective of a fictional cat named Wagahai. This is in parody of the popular book by Natsume Soseki entitled "Wagahai wa Neko de Aru" or I Am a Cat. Currently he is attending Aoyama University studying law.
