So which do you prefer, and why?
I prefer fansubs not just because they come out so much earlier, but also because I find that the voice acting is generally better done. Not to say that there aren't exceptions, but it has been my experience that the original Japanese voices tend to better match the feel of the character.
Case in point: Aburame Shino. Compare his voice in the dub with his voice in Japanese, and the English just sounds laughable.

Fansubs, because they keep the same character voices and I can read so it doesn't matter to me~!!

Fansubs, hands down no competition. I even watch episodes that are already out in English fansubbed.
The voices are better, and there are a lot of things that bug me like suffixes and words like 'teme' that you don't get the full effect of listening to the English dubs. Oh, and the one that really gets me is how in Enligsh, Kankuro calls Karasu 'Crow', even though they don't translate the other names. You don't hear anyone yelling "Hey swirly fish paste thing used to decorate soup! what time is it?" "I don't know deer, please get off your lazy a**!" -siiiigh-

Exactly! Very well put, ArtIsABang. I completely agree on all counts. You just don't get the same effect, having Naruto call Sasuke "jerk" vs "teme", which we all know translates roughly as b*****d.
Because 4evernejichan suggested I explain: dubs are what they show here in America on tv. Everything is translated into English, with the exception of most names. (Ino translates as pig, Chouji translates as butterfly, Shika translates as deer.) But, like ArtIsABang pointed out, for some reason Karasu gets translated. And a fansub is where the voices are still in Japanese, but there are subtitles on the bottom that are translated. Depending on the company doing the subtitles, words like "teme" or "aniki" may or may not be translated.

normally I don't have a preference, but the English voices for Naruto SUCK! (in my opinion) I can't watch it unless its a sub. I couldn't even play the game unless it was on mute.
