Just got into vending and find it quite addictive. I am still learning, but on a great day I can make 10-11,000 just off cheap stuff like inks and mimzys and a couple 07 MCs. That's not alot compared to the more experienced vendors though. I also am looking into a few items for investment. I look into items that might make a profit later on or during an even or holiday. Thought it would be fun to have a discussion thread on the topic to ask questions, share tips, etc. Who vends and/or invests?

Well you know I do and like discussing this aspect of the site. It is actually where I spend the bulk of my Gaia time.
My modus operandi is probably different than most. I tend to buy the junk that nobody wants.. and I usually buy it cheap simply because, well nobody has any use for paper and flowers. There are just so many hats and bouquets one can make. Why do I do it and what is the payoff?
I have only been on this site since last October but I have found plenty of occasion where common junk items have apparently, for no reason, gone crazy in the marketplace. Case in point being tin cans, sunflowers, crumpled paper bags... all of which at some point and time could have been bought for little or nothing. Then mysteriously, they go wild in the market and I usually have a few thousand of them on hand to score a big payday. Same thing with bugs and inks from last week. I had about 9,000 bugs in stock and around 500 inks and turned it into around a 160,000 gold payday.
I also like to watch the market and guess when to start back buying what I have been selling. The fantasy world of Gaia is much like the real world in that when the market gets flooded with sellers, then it becomes a Buyers Market. The quest items from Edmund and the Von Helsings being a good point. The red brooch was costing 500 gold to purchase straight out during the quest and then when everyone started trying to sell them, nobody was left to buy. This quickly drove the price down and I was buying these brooches regularly for 50 gold. I have a good stock of them now and am still buying. No doubt in my mind that I will have to wait about 6 months but then I can triple to quadruple my money on them. This is proven by the Labu necklace, a Valentines Day quest which I bought well over 100 of them for prices around 40-50 gold and am now selling them easily for 175-225.
I'll stop now but look forward to hearing from others...

Another item that is pretty easy to turn small but daily profits on are all the Framed Artworks. If you pay attention for an hour in the MP, you can usually buy several per hour for 100 or under. I usually sell them within 2-3 hours for 140-180. Doesn't seem like much but I found a girl one night that kept listing one after another for 49 gold each. It's one of those items that are regularly available for a big bargain in the market.

I knew at least Don would be in on this discussion! lol
I have almost reached my goal of 100k! I started out with inks and Mimzys, then moved up to 07s and Momos, then Gwees and Mythrill Armor, etc. I am now in the 20k zone with Pixies and Shadow spirits and a few 40k items like Dark Halos. I watch the CN Scarf and Ancient Katanas too, but I can only afford one at a time..but when I do see a good deal I can make 1000 gold or more on them.
I followed the Guide to making your first 100k in the guides forum. It is great.
Once I make 100K, I am going to complete some of my quests, and buy some investment items. I have a small stock of brooches and labu necklaces and mimzys also, for a rainy day...lol
What do you think about last years holiday items? The Spirited hats, boots, etc. for investment? and, perhaps some Nitemare and last year Halloween items too...think they will go up much come Oct and Dec?
It has made the whole Gaia fantasy experience that much more addicting, hehe
Great tips Don!

I have about 40 of the Christmas items from last year. I keep buying spirited boots and gloves because I find them often very cheap. I had a lot of the Halloween items but sold almost all of them at tidy profits. I do think they are all good investments.
Here is my best tip on event items. Halloween and Christmas are usually the two big ones in that you have to work the towns or shops to get the eight offered items. I usually set aside several hours to gather a ton of these gift boxes. Never open them because they will bring more unopened. SELL, SELL, SELL the first night! The price will never be higher than the first several hours of any event. These week long events will see the prices go down, down. Watch close and when you determine that6 they have hit bottom, then BUY, BUY!
I can usually buy back 3-4 complete sets of boxes for the same price that I sold one set for, sometimes 5 sets! Then I sit on them for a few months until the price starts going back up. If they aren't moving, then keep buying... Here's a hug hint...
Let's take this coming Christmas for example. Once the event begins, the boxes will fetch enornous prices, sometimes 12-15,000 gold in the early going. SELL your 2006 boxes at the same time. Lots of newbies will never check that these are 2006 boxes and will be in crazed frenzy just to buy every box that they can get. You will rack up and make a fortune.
Buy the way, those red blood brooches seem to really be recovering from a poor start and now coming in at 700-900 gold. I bought lots of them at 100-200... nice investment! biggrin

What are your thoughts on the New Marketplace and the 2% fee?

Even though I haven't been on Gaia very long, I am not particularily fond of the 2% fee.

I mostly trade in inks. I actually first got started in playing in the Marketplace when the tattoos came out and the inks went crazy. I've made some awful mistakes with the Monthly Collectibles in the MP and I would have to say I've lost about half as much as I've gained overall. I'm still in a learning mode. I don't like some of the mini-event items (Stupid Orbs xp ) but I did well with the Summer Festival items based on Don's strategy. I still mostly play with the inks, but they're not as profitable as before (the market on them has "tightened"). I don't have any mules by choice, I want to see how well I do without them.
As for the NEW Marketplace, overall I like it. It's a bit more cumbersome to use, and it seems to be designed to level the playing field. But I love the added information and extra shelf space (10 items!) and I don't really notice the 2% much (except that they keep notifying us everywhere! )

I like the New Marketplace! You can list more items to sell; has better search tools, etc. It's just too bad it didn't solve the inflation problem on some items. But, that's greed for ya! Maybe in time it will - I highly doubt it though! As for the 2 percent charge - I've had accounts on other sites with a 10 percent selling charge. Oh, well, you learn to live with it I guess?

I haven't done much vending in the New MP yet. I find it too slow. As for the 2%, well I have a spreadsheet and just adjusted my formula to include the "tax", it's not that bad I guess but it is not helping the prices....which I thought was the whole point.

Ok, so I've done some more vending. The new market place is good for searches..but, I hate to see half of my profit go to the fee. It makes it hard to make much specially since I don't like to deal in the higher end stuff now because you have to find a really good deal to make anything off it.
Sooo....
I like the added search options.
I like that you can list more than 3 items.
I dislike having to scroll through pages of my inventory to re-list an item I just bought.
I dislike refreshing the page on one item because it loads slowly with the preview option at the top.
and I hate the 2% fee.
