In a Fallen World....

I just was wondering, I've been telling jokes about Catholics, and Christians in general. I don't mean anything personal, its just like telling another joke. THe only thing that makes them better is people can relate to them more.

Is joking about religious things a sin?

If so I will stop ammedietly (spell)
It'll be hard but I will 3nodding

I stay away from them, because it's really easy to cross the line whenever you're making light of somethine so serious. I guess it depends on how far you go as to if it's a sin? Like... you know. It could stop being just silly fun and actually be some serious basphemy? surprised

I'll let the more educated respond... sweatdrop

@CATSUITS! >> Well, that wouldn’t be me. xD

I'm not usually the one to tell such a joke, rather then laugh hysterically at one. (I'm incredibly bad at jokes. I don't even get them half the time). Which brings up another question on my behalf... is laughing at such jokes a sin? sweatdrop

Cruel personalities will say a "joke" about you that is mean and then excuse it by saying: "Oh I was only teasing!"

Sometimes we really are being good-natured and our friend is nevertheless offended. We need to apologize as best we can and avoid the topic that injures them.

But if joking were a Sin then GK Chesterton would be blazing in hellfire. I sincerely doubt he is. His gift is/was to help people recognize their own folly.

You know you are fully adult when your favorite joke is a good one on yourself. Self-Parody is the west coast style of humour. East coast style is sarcasm, which I personally find offensive and probably "sinful." Sorry to generalize here ... I heart NYC ...!!!

Think how when a little kid does something so adorable in his/her innocence and humble lack of knowledge ... when we laugh at the child they can become angry and humilated, when in fact our laughter just means how much we ADORE the little child!

The child pouts. That's adorable too!

But if we are adults and we "pout" for too long ... then we risk becoming bitter and grudge-bearing.

I hear the laughter of the Seraphim in heaven all the time in my dreams!!! The good Angels laugh at our childish requests ... when we ask for things that are not for our highest good; the blessings whom God alone knows and has in store for us!

My opinion: Tell jokes; please keep joking; trust your heart to let you know when you've gone too far! "A merry heart doeth good like a medicine." Proverbs

I think it depends on the joke.
A lot of jokes are fun, but some are just in bad taste. I'm a big fan of parodies, irony, and just flat out sarcasm, but even these can cross the line.
I guess it depends on the intent of the person telling the joke, as well as a reguard to the audience.
For example, one of my friends keeps bringing up this sarcastic movie on Youtube that she thinks is hilarious. She forgets that she sent it to me, so she'll send it to me again or bring it up a lot.
I thought the movie was in bad taste, and I told her I didn't like it, but she still thinks it's funny. (I don't like overly crude jokes, which was what this was, but it was a crude joke tied in with religion, which in my mind made it even worse.)
Now, the intent of my friend was not to offend me. she really thought this was funny, so I don't get offended at her (though I do wish she'd just forget about the movie already), but at the same time, I think she's kind of forgetting that the joke needs to be funny to the audience as well.
If you have friends who are easily offended by certain things, don't tell such jokes around them. I think it was the book of James that said we should try not to offend people when possible. (i don't remember exactly where it was, but I think I'm remembering this from the bible. I could be wrong.)
However, if you know (or have good reason to suspect) that the person you are telling this joke to will enjoy it, go ahead and tell the joke. If you tell a joke for the purpose of having a good laugh and making other people laugh as well, I don't think it's wrong at all. However, make sure you recognize what your friends think is funny and what they don't, so that you can be careful not to offend them.

But yes I see what you are getting at. I'll get to know the person before i tell the joke heart 3nodding

well it really does depend on the joke i guess, can you give an example of what kind of jokes you tell?
like if the jokes were malicious, poking fun at sacred people or things, belittling the catholic faith or it's teachings, and other things that are holy, or if it's insulting or showing contempt or lack of reverence for God or our religion and its doctrines and writings.
you might also beable to tell if the jokes you're telling are bad if your conscience is bothering you about it,
or here's another way to tell if your jokes are bad or not,
see how you feel about letting someone know about these jokes who are holy people, like a priest or nun, or someone you know who is a good and well knowledgeable catholic,
if you know it will offend them, then that might be good enough reason to think you shouldn't be telling them, or that you should be just as offended at these jokes.
your decision should be based off of good judgment and knowledge, and not just on feelings alone, to trust our feelings alone is foolish when we know the devil can manipulate our feelings,
and to feel it's silly to think the devil could do such things(or any other thing) is without a doubt the devil himself giving you those feelings.

St. Bernard says there is no need for the devil to tempt those who ignore obedience and permit themselves to be guided by their own light and deterred by their fears, for they act the devil's part towards themselves.

the finial decision is really up to you, but you need to think on it alot, if something might be a sin, that is an important matter, especially if that sin is blasphemy.

well, i hope you come to the right decision, and i'll pray for you that you do.

eek wow.... I guess I woudn't tell some of them to a nun or priest... or my grandma.... lol... so I guess there not apropriate to tell. sweatdrop hmmm ya, my concience was getting at me, because I thought I read something about it being a sin if you joke about something within the church that is holy.

I'll tell a joke, and you guys tell me if this is bad to tell sweatdrop

So a nun walks into a confessional and says. "Father I have sinned terribly"
Priest, "No sin is unforgivable in the eyes of God"
Nun, "well... I don't wear pantys underneath my outfit."
Priest, "I see, well say one Hail Mary and do 5 carwheels up to the alter."

(bad? sweatdrop or ok?)

I mean that one has always struck me as just silly, but there's another one I'm going to stop telling sweatdrop because I know it's not good.

i don't want you to feel rotten about it or anything, you really didn't know, but you definitely have the right attitude about it, so keep that up and you'll do just fine,
but don't expect yourself to get over it just like that, i mean maybe you can, but if you fall, don't despair over it.
i'll write out some encouraging words to you that have comforted me, it's from a very good little book on confession..

(out of context)
Do not expect, nevertheless, to become perfect all at once. It takes time, and the child does not become a man in a day. If, in spite of your real good will, you happen to fall, be not discouraged, be not astonished. Arise promptly, peacefully, courageously; by dint of striking on the nail, you will finish by embedding and fastening it in the wall. Whoever wishes the end, wishes the means. If you wish to be strong; it flows through the Sacraments, as from the fountain of life.
