Oh my gosh, let's get some people talking in this guild! And I know plenty of people have read Burroughs because it was largely recommended. So-comment on him here! Here's a whooole topic for us to obsess over him. I've only read Running with Scissors , and am in the middle of Possible Side Effects (in my opinion, not nearly as good, but still hilarious.)
So, what do my fellow Gaians think of him? His story is pretty spectacular, but I can't help but think that we love him not because his story is so unique, but becuase it's not. We've all felt some of his emotions at some time, and maybe some of us had even had similar experiences. It's so refreshing to find someone who will tell it so simply, left simply at the human emotion rather than society's emotion.
Burrough's life is not so uncommon, or at least, many of the occurances in it are not. But they're usually shut up because theyre taboo. On a level deeper than just the humor, I think his book appeals to so many people becuase it makes someone understand they aren't alone (that sounds so cheesy, but it's true) and that he or she won't end up terribly ******** up simply because of a life expirence.
I also have a lone, unconnected thought line that feels, if someone had written the exact same story, but as a fiction, it would have been torn to shreads. "How DARE you make fun of a young boy being subject to that awful *****!"
So-why you like this book -what you think of his writting style and blahblah -how his book affected you -anything else you feel inclined to post.

I've read Running with Scissors - it was bizarre ^_^ I loved it. He tells it so simply, as you said, and suddenly you're accepting the oddest things as everyday, no big deal stuff. Really very cool.

I just got complained about Empress of the World, so it's weird complaining about another book people are arving about... sweatdrop
But I really didn't see what was so spectacular about it... He was just a cocky, gay teenager, in my opinion.
And that whole "We need some light in here. I know! Let's hack a hole in the roof!" thing bugged me...
But, maybe I just don't have taste in books. xP

I really enjoyed Running With Scissors. I never watched the movie; I read it much before the movie came out, but I figure I still may want to see it. (As when I finished the book I was like, "this would be a hilarious movie.")
Quite a lot of people slam Augusten for trying to be like David Sedaris, but I honestly never saw any connection aside from the fact that they're gay men that both wrote humorous autobiographies. I like Augusten's humor better, but it doesn't mean I'm going to compare the two. :c
