Backstory It is a land split by war, a land that was once diverse. Since the war, though, leaders, countries, simpletons all have become xenophobic. Communities dominated by one race often expel everyone of a different race; others which are balanced become tense until some small action breaks the thread that held all of them in balance tautly, and one race expels another and all others hide away in their houses, covering their children’s eyes and ears, waiting for their turn and spying for mistakes. Just waiting for someone to screw up. Often, these communities became dominated by gangs, and these gangs would scare off outsiders.
It is in this time that three gangs become known as the best, the brightest, the strongest.
They are kids, really, but that doesn’t stop them from killing, pillaging, and becoming the most powerful monarchs of their respective areas. Each gang is xenophobic and selective, taking only the best fighters, only the best leaders, the best followers. Each gang is populated by the orphans. A lot more kids are becoming orphans today, since most of the grandparents and parents either hide themselves away or drink themselves to death. There are so many orphans, and no where for them to go – no one to run to. So they run, and they run, until they reach the nearest gang. If the gang accepts them, then they are the lucky ones. If the gang does not…
well… some people were just meant to die young, they say.
so let them
Why should the weak live when the strong can dominate?
Of course, there are freelancers, but they don’t usually live long. They run wild, usually, not strategizing, and working alone. If you go on someone else’s turf, you get killed. So you’ve got to be careful. If you’re a freelancer looking for food, best not check in the wrong places – that’s bound to get you crucified. You can run, run, run, but they will __________________________________________always ___________________________________________________find __________________________________________________________you ______________________________________________________________________sitting in some damnable alley, gnawing past the fruit or snack in your hands right down to your fingernails. That is, unless you’re good. But that takes a lot of work. You don’t get good without practice. You don’t get good without having to kill. Anyway, it’s the strong who live in this world. Smart only counts when you’ve got someone there to watch your back.

Things you should know, if you didn't figure it out:
- No modern conveniences We're talking things like chamberpots and stuff for waste disposal. Bodies are cremated. Disease can happen.
- No technology There was a girl who attempted to bring a GPS device into the roleplay, and, after I kindly explained that this was twenty years after a war had destroyed the city, including the power supply, she removed it from her character.
- Few weapons Now, this does not mean less fighting, it just means more improvising. That means if your character doesn't have a weapon (and I'd prefer if you started off with one weapon AT MOST) they can pick up a piece of wood or a brick from the sidewalk. It's called being creative with your environment.
- Little food Yes, there is food. There isn't much of it. The food eaten in Les Chandelles is found on the street, smuggled in, or grown in trash piles that haven't been burned. There are few animals, save a pigeon or two roaming the city. What animal would live in a city with nothing to eat?
- Little clothing Okay, so people have clothes, but it's mostly rags or old clothes looted from basements or dead bodies. Why would a corpse need a shirt?
- Young folks The oldest person would be, at most, in their late thirties. Most people don't live to be very old, and those that do are neglected as soon as they become burdensome. However, these young people are having children and are taking lovers. Think of the years seventeen to twenty-three being the prime of your life. That's when you have kids, if you're going to have them. Remember, though, malnutrition is common, so the kids will probably be skinny and the mothers even skinnier. If a family has more than two children, they're likely to die.
__An advantage of children is the fact that they can become scavengers, sent to look for food, clothes, weapons, et cetera. Once a child is around age 12, if they're raised in a gang, they can start being taught to fight. This age varies between gangs, but it's more or less the common age for fighters to begin taking place in fights.
- Constant fighting The gangs are not allies with each other. As of yet, there are three, but if there are more developed later, and it wouldn't surprise me if more were, then there are always possibilities of amicable trade between gangs. But, as a notice, Jimmy hates Crack, Crack hates Diamonelle, and Diamonelle is the only sensible one of the three. Jimmy has a tendency to take his gang to a fight for the sake of cooling their heads so they don't kill each other. Diamonelle has a guilty conscience, and therefore will take any child into her gang, whether it be half-dead or not. Crack is out for revenge, but will also listen to his people; he waits for the day to take vengeance, and loathes the day because he knows that at that time, he will have lived out his only passion.
- Disabled folks There aren't many really disabled folks, to say the least, because the only gang that doesn't throw disabled children into the street is the Robinsons. The Jesters and the Reds are quite aware of the fact that they fight alot, and they don't allow disabled children to waste their food and resources when they won't get anything out of it. In essence, if a child is born and it is discovered that they are mentally or physically disabled, the Jesters or Reds will strip the child of their clothing and leave it in an alley to be cremated later. Diamonelle will, if the child is old enough to eat real food, take the child into her care and make sure the child is trained any other fighter.

Albino Raccoon Vice Captain

How to Apply to Les Chandelles To start, you don't have to have a fully formed idea of your character's ins and outs, nor of all of their motivations. All you have to do is PM a writing sample and physical description to Albino Raccoon or Bluberry_mist of your character written in either first- or third-person, assuring that the character's name is stated somewhere in the message. Not everyone needs to know your character's motivation, so the only things we will post on the character message is your character's name and physical description, which can change. You can get scars, limps, clothes, weapons, and other accessories.
We will need smugglers, and you can apply to be one. You may be denied smuggling rights, either for an overabundance of smugglers or a lack of experience, and if this occurs, you can still be in the roleplay as a member of any of the three gangs or as a freelancer. Being a smuggler does not mean you will have a limitless supply of everything; you'll be limited to selling what you won't need. If your character smuggles food, leave some for yourself. If your character smuggles weapons and you're smuggling for more than one gang, you might need one of those weapons. You never know when one gang is going to find out you're smuggling for another gang. And be careful, because there are a few characters that have changed gangs, because they have a multi-ethnic heritage and can make it in more than just the Reds or Jesters. The Robinsons have many ethnic backgrounds, and that sometimes causes tension, so some of them could leave for another gang, if tensions broke and caused a large fight.
As a starting point, you can use these questions as a base for your character:1. What is my character's name? 2. How old is my character? Was he/she around before the bombs ravaged the city or did they come on the scene after? Does my character miss the old life? Does he/she even know what life was like before the bombs? 3. Which gang does my character affiliate with? Or is he/she a freelancer? How does he/she get all of their resources? (i.e. through a smuggler or other means?) 4. What does my character look like? Does he/she have any scars or defects? Would these affect his/her ability in battle? 5. What is my character's motivation for being in a gang/being a freelancer? 6. Is my character a leader or a follower? Is he/she strong-willed and stubborn or docile and easily persuaded? 7. Does my character like being in their gang/a freelancer or does he/she want to start a new gang? 8. (If your character is in a gang) Would my character turn on his/her gang in a moment or would he/she stay loyal no matter what? 9. What does my character smuggle and where is the source? 10. What is my character willing to pay for the smuggled goods he/she gets?
To apply, title the subject of your message "Les Chandelles" and put your gang affiliation or lack thereof after the title. By that, I mean you can put any of the five: Jester, Robinson, Red, Freelancer, or Smuggler. If you are not accepted as a smuggler, you should put your character's affiliation in the body of the application message.

After your application is read, you will be sent a message telling you whether or not you were accepted. To apply for the role of Diamonelle, send a message to Albino Raccoon with their name instead of a gang affiliation. (Read below for character descriptions. If you are accepted, you will be sent a message containing the character's personality traits.)

As stated above, and I want to make this clear, this universe is different from the other RP threads allowed. Anyone can still join, but we need to know about your character to help the plot along (because the plot is intricate) so please pm first and get our approval/suggestions before you begin. Thanks.

Gang Affiliations Jesters:
Crack played by Albino Raccoon Crack is a scrawny ghast of twenty-one years, and he's tall with a fair complexion. He has one gun with one clip, which he doesn't use in combat. Always he has a Swiss knife on his person, a gift from his father when he was a boy. Crack's clothes are old, most likely found in some trunk in what used to be his house, and he wears a sleeveless white shirt with suspenders to hold up black pants, frayed at the bottom. His shoes are scuffed, but if he could polish them, they would be black bowling shoes with white accents on the toe. He also wears a fedora, which keeps his long, curly, dirty brown hair from getting in his eyes. As far as facial hair goes, he does his best to keep clean-shaven, using his old knife to trim small shadows of hair each morning in a tarnished mirror that the gang had found one day.
Reds:
Jimmy played by Jimmy is a nineteen-year-old boy of Chinese parentage, and he keeps his gang well-clothed, though as far as food goes, it's every man for himself. He's not skinny, but that's not to say he's fat, either. He's fit, and he often wears a red shirt with other rags. His hair is often oily and spiked because of it, but when it's clean, it's short and black, until it's almost the color of night. He had a lover once, but she left the Reds when he refused to see that black-and-white decisions were not everything, and there could be gray decisions, as well. If he had gone after her, she would have been right.
Robinsons:
Diamonelle played by Diamonelle's not much of anything; that is, she never tried to make anything of herself. Being the oldest of the leaders at twenty-six, she's got more experience and tends to be able to come up with phenomenal strategies based on her loosely knit gang's ability to find their way through the sewers. Well, only if push comes to shove. At 5' 3", she's far from tall and not quite short, but it doesn't matter, because she's packing anyway. Often wearing a dirty white scarf with her dress and boots, she only carries her guns after midnight. Unless, of course, there's going to be a party down in the square. She's scrawny - the years of little food without theft have taken their toll on her figure, making it all angles and mostly fragile-looking. She's not fragile, and don't let anyone convince you otherwise; it could mean your death.
Freelancers:
Hollows: Gazs played by Gazs is a large black man whose main prerogative is to keep his family alive. He is (relatively) well-dressed, having clothes that can be regularly mended. His daughter, sister, and lover live with him and other Hollows on a farm outside the city, where they cultivate food, including meat, and they build other small one-room houses for the ragtag smuggling gang they have formed. He is strong with a powerful personality, and good control over his people.

Gang information:
Jesters: White gang; led by Crack. They have a gargantuan rivalry ongoing with the Reds, but other than that are fairly normal in comparison with the other gangs. Very little of everything, except what they can have smuggled in. After a fight, they leave their dead, crippled, and mortally injured behind because they can't provide for themselves. Regimental fighting style. Children who are born or become unhealthy are discarded.
Reds: Chinese gang. Very much anarchic - the only rule is who can fight best. Led loosely by Jimmy. Fighting occurs often within the gang, but Jimmy just sees it as a way to keep his people in shape. When they fight, anyone who doesn't follow is left behind. If they can't keep up, they can't fight. Guerrilla fighting style. Children who are born or become unhealthy are discarded.
Robinsons: All ex-freelancers, except a few who joined the gang in the days before Diamonelle was the leader. Diamonelle, though, has reduced the Robinsons' involvement in fights, keeping them to the sewers. If they do fight, it's a highly stealth-based fighting style, utilizing the sewer territory greatly. Everyone is saved, including children discarded by the Jesters and Reds.
Hollows: Smugglers whose base of operations is outside the city on a working farm. Their business hinges on the gangs continuing to fight with each other, and they trade with each gang equally, giving information, weapons (once in a while), food, and other needs the gangs may have. Usually, though, the gangs can't afford all they need, and Gazs, the leader of the Hollows, takes advantage of this fact. He always travels into town with an envoy of three or four other Hollows, just in case.
Freelancer Information:
The freelancers have nothing. They do not have anything that they cannot get on their own, because they don't have connection to the Hollows. They have no gangs, few have family. They are ghosts in this city of memory.
