Have you ever read a really good book which you started reading for a bit of light entertainment but by the end you began to wonder if it might have had a point after all?

Or perhaps some crazy person traps you while your out shopping to tell you fanatically about their new religion...or ultimate answer. You brush them aside (hopefully while being senstive to their feelings) and continue your day...but when you get home the conversation starts to nag away at your mind?

Perhaps you would like an explanation to my musings.

It starts with a book.

---THE HITCHHICKERS GUIDE TO THE GALAXY---

If you havnt read it before its basically about this bunch of people who zoom across the galaxy and in the proccess become entangled in the mysteries of Life The Universe And...well Everything.

Sure..brush it off as humerous garbage....BUT WHAT IF IT SPEAKS THE TRUTH!!!????

Feel free to reply with your thoughts...or snort in contempt of my lowlife form thinking.

Hitchhiker's isn't "humerus garbage," not by any stretch of the imagination. The comedy is just a vehicle. Whoever told you that it was just a funny light read had clearly missed the point!

Anyways, I believe that there's something to be found in everything. Even the trashiest, worst book has some element of truth in it. Even if that truth is merely insight into the author's mind (and therefore, into human nature). You can learn something from everything as long as you keep your mind open.

Nah, I think you're right. And also here on Gaia, sometimes somebody will make a really good post or thread or something, but you find yourself ignoring it just because their avatar is badly dressed or because they misspell a lot of words. But still, that doesn't make them wrong.

And who knows? Maybe the answer to life, the universe, and everything really is 42.

I did watched the movie.... sweatdrop

Well actually I've been wanting to read the book, because I've been told it is much better than the movie, but the thing is I can only find it in spanish (I live in Southamerica) and translated books suck. rolleyes

Anyways, I have to say even in the movie you are able to see the authors particular and creative way of seen the universe. neutral

About my belives, I think the Universe is so increadibly large that there are an infinite number of posiblities, therefor anything is possible. Except for me to stop using emoticons like a retard 4laugh .

I've seen the movie and listened to the radio play, but haven't gotten to reading the book, though I want to at some point.
To put it simply: I think Hitchhiker's Guide has some points, but shouldn't be taken literally. At least not completely. I have the same oppinion on the bible; read between the lines, not just the lines themselves.

Well I kind of agree with you.

I think sometimes authors make things light and humorous so people will read them. Let's face it, a lot of people don't want to read something serious in the off time.

Thus, sometimes things must be put into humor, or a simpler version, or sometimes even dumbed down. Often, people wouldn't realize that there is a deeper meaning, or maybe some do but don't care enough to look deeper.

And other times, there isn't a deeper meaning. We just think there is. You know? It's like there are a few people say there is a deeper meaning in everything, but then once in a while you hear from an author and s/he says there isn't one. It's just supposed to be light and funny.

Pretty much, I think it's up to the reader to interpret it, to take it to a deeper level or just let the humor shine through.

Know what's really interesting?

A friend of mine told me that his other friend found out that 42 in binary, somehow means love.

Kinda makes one wonder huh? xd

There are so many lessons in the world; You could spend years staring at one stone and learn thousands of them if you look deep enough. But one thing I've found for sure: There are way too many coincidences in the world. If you find a book or a person who calls to you for no real reason, look into it; It might be very important.

You are a blaspheme to any higher power that may exist for implying that the Hitchhiker's Guide is any less than genius!

/flaming

One of the earlier posters speaks the truth in saying that every written work is insight into the human mind, and thus human nature. Every little thing done by humans is a point for that, in themselves. That cultist trying to shove their religion down your throat is trying to save and enlighten you. A noble cause, if I do say so myself.

And the HG does have a point. It's very well-hidden and easily skipped over.

Now now now...calm down! Many people have implied that I am implying that the Hitchhikers Guide to The Galaxy is "anything less than genius".

THAT IS NOT TRUE AT ALL.

I was simply saying that SOME people think that way...but my main point was that although it SEEMS like a comedic parody of life it may speak of higher truths.

ARE WE CLEAR!!!????

And I have to agree that if you leave your mind open to anything..yes even a rock as mentioned by a previous post....many views etc become clearer.

Answers hidden in 'stupidity', eh?

I wouldn't say stupidity, but yeah, I think there are. Most of the things in life stay inside the boundaries of what we consider logic. So when there's a problem, the answer can usually be found in amongst the first ideas that come into your mind, though of course they usually need to be altered a little.

You know new inventions, how they're usually very simple and you wonder to yourself "Why didn't I think of that!". It's under that same kind of idea, that I encourage people to try to think outside the square. To question the things around them. You can do it within your head, and it's not as if it'll make you look stupid because no one (I think) can read your mind, though your 'thinking face' may look a little silly. Who knows though, you may stumble across something in your 'stupid' pattern of thoughts that can better the world around you.

I try not to pass things off as stupid. An open mind isn't bad. (I kinda strayed, sorry.)

I don't think good writers usually use humor in order to make people pay attention when they otherwise wouldn't, so much as to point out that life is kind of ridiculous and becomes more so as people take it seriously. Taking humor seriously misses the point.
