I was checking out some of the reviews I saw and this one caught my eye and really urked me. Quote: * 1/2 Bizarre shallow moral message Reviewer: Anonymous from Anonymous Dark film which places emphasis on beauty and the "blonde" characters portrayed in this film. Sophie, the 18-year-old dark-haired/dark-eyed hat shop girl, expresses her anguish throughout the film at being unattractive. Oddly enough she is attractive, so this part of the story is perplexing. Howl the wizard is brought to tears upon finding his beautiful blonde hair turned red after a shampoo (I wonder what ginger haired children are to make of this?). As the film progresses and meanders, dark villians come and go and wouldn't you know ... at the very end ... whalaa! A rag-tag character turns into a handsome blonde prince as all the others stand in awe of his beauty. So the moral of the story is, if you're blonde you will be accepted and sought after.

Hm... Yes, well. I suppose we can't expect everyone to view this a normal level of intelligence. Even my little cousin (age 10) could pick up on the underlying theme of beauty. Except she caught on the other way. Especially in the books, Sophie thought she wasn't pretty. That's why she couldn't break the curse for the longest time. In the novel, and to a lesser extent in the movie (the movie she transformed back and forth due to love for the most part) once she realized that didn't matter, she broke the curse.
Apparently, they also forgot Howl saying Sophie's grey hair at the end was beautiful. The Witch of the Waste, who was very ugly, is also said to have a kind heart at the end of the movie.
Either way, we know much better than them so it's best just to shrug it off. And write a much better review for it. heart

Well, yes, that too. The confidence stems from her own self-worth and her learning to appreciate her own beauty, I think. But she transformed also when she started thinking of her love for Howl.

Wow. I'm wondering if that person is an actual movie critic, or just decided to write this thing on a whim. They obviously weren't looking for the deeper themes in the movie. Even Howl's hair doesn't remain blonde at the end of the movie. Geez.
