Ah, I love alliteration. ^_^~

Anywho! According to The Tough Guide to Fantasyland, characters in a fantasy story can be identified by tell-tale color coding in hair, eyes, clothes, and complexion, as identified below. If you feel up to reading the whole article, why not take a moment to see just what your characters' color coding says about them!

The Tough Guide
Colour Coding is very important in Fantasyland. Always pay close attention to the colour of the clothing, hair, and eyes of anyone you meet. It will tell you a great deal. Complexion is also important: in many cases it is coded too.

1. Clothing. Black garments normally mean Evil, but in rare cases can mean sobriety, in which case a white ruffled collar will be added to the ensemble. Grey or red clothing means that the person is neutral but tending to Evil in most cases. Any other colour is Good, unless too many colours are worn at once, in which instance the person will be unreliable. Drab colour means the person will take little part in the action, unless the drab is also torn or disreputable, when the person will be a loveable rogue.

2. Hair. Black hair is Evil, particularly if combined with a corpse-white complexion. Red hair always entails magical Powers, even if these are only latent. Brown hair has to be viewed in combination with eyes, whose colours are the real giveaway (see below), but generally implies niceness. Fair hair, especially if it is silver-blond, always means goodness.

3. Eyes. Black eyes are invariably Evil; brown eyes mean boldness and humor, but not necessarily goodness; green eyes always entail Talent, usually for Magic but sometimes for Music; hazel eyes are rare and seem generally to imply niceness; grey eyes mean Power or healing abilities (see Healers) and will be reassuring unless they look silver (silver-eyed people are likely to enchant or hypnotise you for their own ends, although they are not always Evil); white eyes, usually blind ones, are for wisdom (never ignore anything a white-eyed person says); blue eyes are always Good, the bluer the more Good present; and then there are violet eyes and golden eyes. People with violet eyes are often of Royal birth and, if not, always lead uncomfortably interesting lives. People with golden eyes just live uncomfortably interesting lives, and most of them are rather fey into the bargain. Both these types should be avoided by anyone who only wants a quiet life. Luckily, it seldom occurs to those with undesirable eye colours to disguise them by Illusion, and they can generally be detected very readily. Red eyes can never be disguised. They are Evil and surprisingly common.

4. Complexion. Corpse-white is Evil, and it grades from there. Pink-faced folk are usually midway and pathetic. The best face-colour is brown, preferably tanned, but it can be inborn. Other colours such as black, blue, mauve, and yellow barely exist.

So, if your aquaintance is wearing green and is blue-eyed and brown-faced, she/he will be OK. Caution: Do not apply these standards to your own world. You are very likely to be disappointed.

So? How do your characters measure up? And don't think you can get away with not doing this just because you don't write fantasy--it might be funnier that way!

Let's see...

Vitae:
Black clothes = Evil
Black hair = Evil
Green eyes = Talent
Corpse-white complexion = Evil

And his weapon of choice is a crossbow, which, in another article, is reserved for Evil people and the Gay Mage.

So Vitae's a talented evil person. lol Or a Gay Mage in disguise.

Yinda:
Drab, tattered, disreputable clothing = Loveable rogue
Brown hair = General niceness
Brown eyes = Boldness and humor
Tanned complexion = Good

This makes Yinda a loveable, generally nice, bold, funny, good person.

Sabine:
Green robes = Good
Red hair = Magical Powers
Green eyes = Talent
Pinkish, freckled complexion = Midway and pathetic

Sabine is a good, if pathetic girl with Magical Talent.

Nathan:
Too many colors = Unreliable
Blonde hair = Good
Blue eyes = Good
"Normal" complexion aparently non-applicable. confused

Therefore, Nathan is a doubly good, if unreliable, person.

Jericho:
Drab clothing = Takes little part in the action
Black hair = Evil
Brown eyes = Boldness and humor, except when they look black
Tanned complexion = Good

Jericho is a bold, funny, evilish-good fellow who prefers to stay out of the action.

It seems to have Vitae and Nathan switched around, though Yinda is pretty much right. Sabine doesn't have magical powers or extraordinary talents, and is far from pathetic. I'm tempted to say Jericho's is mostly correct.

Right, let's have a crack at this.

Clothing:
- Shin is the only character to wear grey on a regular basis. This was meant to have something to do with his insignificance in the scale of things (he's not the chosen one, he's the destined father of the chosen one).
- Shigure wears dark blue when out on the town, and light blue at home. It's note worthy that when he kills Maria and beats up Yogan and Ike (all cruel and unreasonable actions) he's wearing the dark blue.
- As for the twins, Aka (id) wears black or red, while his brother (ego) wears more white and red.
- Kuroi and the Reikos wear black, and they are selected as being 'evil' (or at least a very dark shade of neutral). Then again, the Tenko are the same, and they wear gold or white...
- I am responsible for the colour = elements thing. But we needed some way to tell the families apart!

Hair:
- Shigure = black hair and pale complextion. But that was more to make him look bishouenly-sexy than make him evil.
- Red hair = Yogan, Aka, Akai, Ian and Hannah. The first three weild fire powers (but, then again, the Biko family of kitsune are the only ones with fire powers, and the only with red hair). Ian's a Mexican Maned (were)Wolf. As for Hannah... she just has red hair. Mange has red hair too... because he's a rebel.
- Brown hair = like, none of them. I almost have no brown-haired characters, unless I really want to stress their normalness. Hah, I have brown hair, too.
- Not so on the silver-blonde! Yurei has silver-blonde hair, wears white and has grey eyes, and he's one of the evilest characters in Foxglove! Blonde is a more common colour and I notice that I normally put it on a lead character or someone who's supposed to be pretty.
- Blue = Ainu. I wonder what that's supposed to mean?

Eyes:
Number one rule in kitsune, so I'm a repeat offender in this area...
- Black eyes = the Reikos (void). I avoid describing dark brown eyes as 'black'. Goddamnit, they're dark brown!
- Brown eyes = 'normalness', earth powers... although the snow kitsune have brown eyes, too.
- green = sometimes on a lead character... otherwise... meh. It's just a normal character. The kitsune in the 'wood' domain also have green eyes. Oh! Intense green eyes are a plot point for Sphinx, and show that he's 'evil'/unique.
- hazel = actually, none.
- grey = usually, ghost or wind powers. Odd.
- none of them have white eyes.
- blue is not always good. Both of the cruellest Nogitsune families have blue eyes. Especially the Tokikos, who have eyes as blue as they get; only one of them shows his eyes for an extended period of time, and he's the evillest. However, in accordance to this 'rule', Ainu has blue eyes, and he's the nicest in Thesis 48.
- violet eyes in Foxglove deal in the domain of life and death.
- golden eyes in Foxglove show the Tenko. Heavenly domain.
- all the Bikos have red eyes, as does Mange. None of them are evil or bad.

Complextion:
- Corpse-white = the vampires, none of which are all evil; I guess Ainu counts with his blue-white pale skin, but that's because he's an amphibian, not because he's evil.
- Pink = none. It's a pathetic colour and always looks horrible on complexions.
- brown = -.-' People from that ethnic origin!
- black = dark elves
- mauve = wood elves, I think.

There we go. Nice and long. Come on, arrest me.

P.S: Can you post a link to the weapon article? That could be interesting.

I want to see that weapon article as well. xD It might be amusing.

Drazora:
Blue clothing: Good
Violet eyes: Royal birth.
Freakishly pale: Evil. xD
Apparently, really unnatural hair colors don't count for anything.

Drazora is apparently of royal birth, leads an uncomfortably interesting life, and is good and evil at the same time.

Erin:
Green clothing: Good
Green eye and Blue eye: Talent and goodness
Brown hair: Nice
Tanned complexion: Good.

Erin is a kind, good person with magic talent.

Lady Death:
Black clothing: Evil.
Black hair: Evil.
White eyes: Wisdom
Freakishly pale skin: Evil.

Lady Death is a wise, evil person.

Tiamat:
Purple clothing: Good.
Dark skin: Good
Green eyes: Talent

Tiamat is a good, talented mage.

Umm. xD WTF? Drazora's is closest to how he actually is... and even then it's a bit of a stretch. He's just the (forgetful) gay mage. xD

The others are just dead wrong. xD

I really need to check that book out sometime.
Quote:
Janus:
Red clothing/tattered drab clothing: neutral but tending to Evil in most cases/loveable rogue
Black hair/red hair: Evil/magical Powers
Green eye: Talent
Pale-ish skin: Evil

She's a lovable rogue tending to Evil in most cases, with a Talent for magical Evil Powers.

Kasume:
Doesn't really have a standard color outfit: Good
Brown hair/white hair: Good/Good
Blue eyes: Good
Normal skin: N/A; I don't see an equivalent in the list

Kasume is Good.

Iris:
Doesn't really have a standard color outfit: Good
Brown hair: niceness
Green eyes: Talent
Freckled, fair skin: N/A

She's good ... nice ... and has a Talent.

Arcisan:
Green clothing: Good
Blonde hair: Good
Blue eyes: Good
Tanned skin: Good

Arcisan is Good. lol

Leon:
Brown-tone clothing (I'll consider it drab): takes little part in action
Brown hair: niceness
Dark brown eyes: closest I see is "hazel," which means niceness
Somewhat tanned: Good

Leon is a good, nice guy who takes little part in the action.

Victor:
Doesn't really have a standard color outfit: Good
Blonde hair: Good
Gray eyes: Power or healing abilities
Pale skin: Evil

Victor is good ... but evil ... with healing abilities.

Janus' is interesting because her final description is pretty much exactly what she was in her early days -- the neutral but evillish wandering rogue with evil powers, blahblahblah. She apparently still looks it, but thankfully/hopefully doesn't act it anymore. xd

Leon's is really vague, but correct in that sense, too.

Arc's cracks me up, because he's a villain.

Hurrah for blonde villains! biggrin Come to think of it, every single "evil" person in my book is either blonde with blue eyes or blonde with brown... >>;

I'd post the weapons article, except for the fact that the article leads off into about fifteen separate articles for various weapons listed. @_@ And since the Tough Guide isn't (or at least shouldn't be) located online, I'd have to type the whole thing up myself. ;.; *makes shoo-ing motions* Go check it out for yourself. It's The Tough Guide to Fantasyland by Diana Wynne Jones. It shouldn't be too hard to find; they just re-released it last year.

I have both editions. ninja

Ah, okay, I'll have a look around...
PostPosted: Tue Aug 21, 2007 10:57 am

Okay, so...

Blake first, then?

Clothing- drab grey tending to evil, takes little part in the action)
Hair-brown (probably niceness)
Eyes- I dunno, hazel? (niceness)
Complexion- pretty normal (so... neutral?)

A nice, kinda evil guy, who takes little part in the action. No. Just... no. stare

Magdalena now.

Clothing- too many colors (unreliable)
Hair- black (evil)
Eyes- dark brown, bordering on black (nice, almost evil)
Complexion- deep tan (super good)

Well, this is kinda conflicting on the good/evil spectrum. xd Aand, other than that, a nice, although unreliable person... I wouldn't call her unreliable.

And finally, Jack.

Clothing- torn, disreputable, but w/ black trenchcoat (a loveable rogue, but evil)
Hair- mauve (red maybe?-tallented)
Eyes- oh, say brown (nice)
Complexion- normal again (a bit neutral)

A possibly evil, although loveable rogue, nice, with great tallent. Other than the "nice" part, suprisingly accurate. I mean, maybe his inner self is nice, but... no. I would not call Jack nice.
