i play my bass with my fingers and i think it is better because you don't get that crappy twang when you pick. My friends say if you use a pick you can play faster but i have no problem playing the 32nd notes for my band and we play heavy metal with fast parts and lots of tricky fingerings. sooo... what do you prefer and why?

Wow. That sucks.

But Yeah, Pick in the band. I play in a pop-punk band. better sound for what I do.

Not because I can't play with my fingers. I'm a freaking maestro.

I just like 'that annoying twang.' better.

It all depends what style you're playing and what sound you're looking for. I use fingers, but when I need a lot of treble/punch, I'll use my fingernail as a makeshift pick. Most times I play using a three finger technique, but will use two or even one depending on what the situation calls for.

I play with both fingers and pick, depending on the style. I prefer fingers, because it's easier to switch between strumming, picking along, walking, slap/pop, and tapping, but sometimes the sound I'm going for just calls for a pick.

I think its all on the song your playing if it needs the twangy sound, like some of system of a down songs the bass needs that twangy sound although that mostly comes from the guitar you can do it with the bass if your playing on your own with the pick, I mostly just use my fingers

I play with my fingers mostly

but if I am playing a song by a band, and the bassist uses a pick, I use a pick

Fingers get any sound depending on how you pluck it. But if a pick is what you prefer, more power to you. I like to use my fingers, I get a better feel of where my hand is by string thickness.

I prefer using my fingers. I'm not always the fastest with them, though. If I need to play faster, I use a pick. I don't use a normal guitar pick, though. I use a pick made of some kind of felt that generates less extra noise. If I'm looking for that annoying twangy sound, I use a quarter or a fifty cent piece; it's murder on the strings but the sound is wonderful.

Fingerpicks! (Haha, j/k! Though that might actually be pretty bad arse to try. pirate ).

Seriously though, both are good. Pros and cons on each end, but as I generally slap, to me it seems like i'm leaning towards a 2 to 1, fingerplay/slap overcomes picks.

Picks have never felt right to me, but I started out using my thumb because it felt the most natural. Now I use my fingers almost all of the time.
