How To Role Play,
An Overview
Ok, so hopefully you realize what exactly role playing is, playing pretend, using words and actions with other people on the internet or in real life to tell a story and generally, amuse yourself for a while in a creative way.
Just like when you're a little kid, you have to play fair(the rules aren't unreasonable and they are there for a reason), and involve others or they will storm off yelling "This isn't fun any more!" and go watch TV or play video games instead, then you're stuck rp-ing by yourself and thats no fun. This brings the basic rules of almost any rp to mind, no godmodding, or power playing. Simply put, don't make and invincible ridiculous character, and don't auto hit people. The rule of thumb is, compensation. If you have totally rad magical powers, don't make yourself and invincible huge hulking tank of a person, you(in desired situations) should leave an opening for other players to exploit, that way, the story can progress and grow and change, it isn't always you killing people and laughing manically.
As for auto hitting, You should say things like *takes a swing at Bob* Then Bob can reply with *dodges the swing and tries to counter with a punch* or *the punch lands right in my face and i fall over.* When you try to hit someone, you have to give them a way out, and when someone is trying to hit you, it is best to give them a variety of answers, again, them never hitting you or hitting you all the time is no fun.
ok moving on.
An essential for rp-ing is having a character. There are so many options and choices you can make it makes my head hurt, in this guild, you post your profile in the profile subforum. If you hop on over there and look at a few i think you'll get the idea, they even have a nifty little template up for you(I recommend using it in the guild.) When using a list template like that, it is best to be short and sweet with your answers unless its a background, or overall appearance you're filling out. Under Name: should be just your name, not your fave color or any thing else, its all self explanatory really. Outside the guild, in individual threads, depending on the rules and specifications and weather you apply to join or not, you can always make a nice intro that describes you, and include your bio and what not in the rp it's self.
-insert example later when i find one <.< -
As you can see, no list was used but it covers all the basics, body build, hair and eyes, clothes, the general feel of the person. Even when you have a profile posted else where, it is nice to include some of your look in your post because not every one likes to go search for your character(hehe lazy lazy lazy) Little descriptive things also give your post some meat and make is just sound better, things like "Her ice like eyes shifted over the grand room." is much better than "Her eyes looked around." It tells you more about the place and the person, like a book.
