Biography Starting in 1996, three members were in the band. Tuomas Holopainen, Tarja Turunen, and Emppu Vuorinen. In 1997, Jukka "Julius" Nevalainen was recruited because they wanted to expirement with drums. The acoustic guiter was replaced with electric at this time. The band went to record seven songs which can be heard on the limited edition album Angels Fall First. In May 1997, the band signed a contract with Spinefarm for two records. That August, the band went to the studio and recorded four new songs. The single The Carpenter was released and made it to number eight on official Finland charts. They played their first gig in Kitee. After that, Nightwish only played seven gigs because Jukka and Emppu were in the army and Tarja had to finish her studies. Spinefarm then extended their contract to three records instead of two. In 1998, they started filming their first video, The Carpenter. The bassist Sami Vänskä joined at this time. Oceanborn was released on December 7th. In the winter of 1999, Nightwish played many gigs. In the spring, Oceanborn was first released out of Finland. The single Sleeping Sun was being recorded at the time that they were playing shows. In August, Nightwish learned that Oceanborn had sold gold. In early 2000, they went to the studio to record their third album. The album Wishmaster was released in May and Nightwish went on the Wishmaster tour. March 2001, Nightwish began their remake of Gary Moore's classic Over The Hills And Far Away. This year came with many changes including the departure of Sami Vänskä and the welcoming of Marco Hietala, who had promised to step in while still playing in Tarot and Sinergy. To celebrate this "new beginning" Nightwish opened their Nightwish-shop which sold merchandise from Nightwish. Century Child came out in 2002 and proved a huge success. Within 2 weeks it sold platinum and continued selling rapidly. At this time, Nightwish held the position of first place for their first time ever. They took a break after their tour, and went their seperate ways for a short time... 2003 saw the tour DVD of End of Innoncence. Meanwhile, Tarja Halonen, Finland's president took note of Nightwish's achievements and invited Tarja Turunen and her husband Marcelo Cabuli to the annual indepence day party. Tarja's dress was voted most beautiful that evening. In 2004, Nightwish released Once which was the most anticipated release ever. Nightwish was advertised everywhere in Germany by then, and every German would know Nightwish. Once went gold the day of it's release and so did their single Nemo. 2005 saw the fuss over the firing of Tarja Turunen and Marcelo Cabuli due to their attitude and actions during the Once tour. Once the fuss was over, Nightwish began to search for their new singer. After two long years the wait was over. In 2007, Nightwish let out who their new singer was. Anette Olzon who had previously been in Alyson Avenue before Nightwish, came to work with them to record the new album Dark Passion Play. Already, Nightwish has leaked five promo songs, and many around the world are much too eager to listen to the whole CD. Anette has proven herself worthy to Nightwish, and now they working to make things better. As Nightwish themself has said, "Nightwish will never be Nightwish without Tarja, but we will keep working hard."

I think I overdid it... ^^;;;; There's no such thing as overdoing something smile But hey! It was informative for me! I didn't even know that Tarja had left. I might just go and listen to some new songs to find out what this Anette sounds like. Is she any better/worse/different from Tarja in your opinion?

Ooooh, Anette is AWESOME. While singing in some parts with Marco, she's a bit on the lacking side, but apart from that she's GOOD. She's not opera, because if she did sing opera then ha... It would be Nightwish's doom in her words. xD
But yeah. If you listen to Bye Bye Beautiful, Tuomas wrote that song to Tarja. They are taking the Once music and adding a bit of a more mystical feel to it. :] Go check it out! xDDD
And as for the better/worse/different.... She's different but in a very good way. I'll let you decide. Personally I can't choose between them because Tarja is my idol but I still love Anette with all my heart. >.<

I have been a Nightwish fan for a couple years now. I just caught some of the new song promos on Youtube and I really do like the new singer. I went and pre-ordered the new album. Oceanborn is the only CD that I don't own, if you ignore Highest Hopes.

I know I'll probably get shot for saying this, but I like the new lead singer better than Tarja. She's just more my taste

Nightwish, in my opinion, is BRILLIANT. I have legally bought all of their albums and don't get tired of them. Very nicely done thread.
