Listen to moar Metal and make sure you're tuning is in drop D. Also, work on your tremolo picking.

It depends if you're rhythm or lead.
Rhythm: Palm muting is your best friend. Sometimes pinch harmonics as well.
Lead: Sweep Picking Alternate Picking Scales for solos Arpeggios

Tapping can also come in mighty handy, if you're a lead player.

I like to solo in the pentatonics and play heavy driving riffs but I don't like drop D.

Edit: Heavyness =/= Metalness.

Zepelin is metal it just not hair metal or CRAP like metallica Zepelin is classified as heavy metal
