Last Dance, Last Chance [[..-Prologue-..]]

[[.-Emily, 15-..]]
[[..-Mae, 15-..]]

May 3rd, 2005

Kenmore High, Arlington Virginia

Spring Fling Dance

"Don't worry, Em! He'll be here...I know he will."

"And how do you know, Mae? Because you have a hunch? Your 'hunches' are always wrong, Mae...we both know that." Emily sighed and turned away from her friend, her back now facing the wall. Her soft peach dress rustled as she moved, twirling slightly with grace. She leaned her back against the wall and sighed again. "Mae...I can't wait forever. I'm leaving tomorrow....this is....this is my last chance...and his."

Mae placed a hand gently on her best friend's shoulder. "I know Em...that's why you have to be strong, and be patient. He'll be here..."

Emily nodded, but as she lifted her head a final time, smile spread across her face as she saw him. But...the smile faded. With another girl? "I knew it was too good to be true. He'll never fall for a girl like me." She turned to her friend with a somewhat forced smile.

"Looks like he lost his chance." She took a deep breath, grabbing her purse from the floor next to her. "Mae...once I'm gone....tell Jayden for me, ok? Please...tell him everything I feel." The tears welled in her eyes, as she threw her arms around her best friends neck. "I'll miss you, Mae."

Mae began to cry as well, as the two friends embraced. "I'll miss you too, Em....more than you'll ever know. Call me when you get there! PLEASE call me. I don't want to loose touch."

"I will....I promise!" Emily let go and wiped the tears from her eyes. "I'll miss you so much...I'll call every day." The girls embraced one last time, maybe the last, and Emily rushed out, not even a glance behind at her first highschool crush.

[[..-Jayden, 16-..]]

Jayden rolled his eyes as Kaitlynn leaned out the window of his car, waving to some jocks in the parking lot. "Kaitlynn, get you're head back in. We're parking and it's going to hit the car next to us." He sighed, and angled the car into the parking space.

Kaitlynn obliged, but huffed. "I only asked you here because you're cute. Now don't make me upset, I can ruin your reputation you know." She rolled her eyes as well and opened the door as he parked, her form-tight, pastel pink dress swaying only softly.

"And I only agreed so I would have a date. So c'mon...." he sighed. "I have to...I have to meet someone." They had arrived at the door, and as he opened it, his eyes met those soft, foresty eyes he had hoped to see. He smiled, but suddenly...she turned away, talking to Mae. A million questions ran through his mind. "Stay here, I'll be back in a minute."

"You wish! I'm outa here..."

Jayden ignored the words, for he didn't really care in the first place. As he took a step, ready to rush to Emily's side, he stopped, as the two girls embraced...tears in the emerald eyes he loved. He knew exactly what happened, and as she walked out, he cursed himself, shaking his head. He ran up to Mae, confusion in his eyes... "Where is she going?"

Mae shook her head, turning away from the boy. "You missed her, Jayden. You missed your chance....she's gone."

"What? What do you mean gone? I can still catch her...she's not gone yet!" His voice was frantic. "Where is she going?! I need to know, Mae! Please tell me!"

"Jayden, you know exactly where she's going! She's moving to California!! It was all around school." the girl glared at him, hateful for what he had done to her best friend. "You killed her inside, Jayden. She waited for you! She loved you!! And you ruined it! Coming here with that slut of a girl! Like I said...you missed your chance. There's no catching her now. She'll be gone by four in the morning tomorrow. And I'm sure she's already half way to her house right now. You blew it, boy. You blew it big time." Mae shook her head, and took her own purse, turning to go, but Jayden grabbed her arm.

"You have to help me, Mae, please. You have to."

"I can't, Jayden. This is your fault, and there's nothing I can do..." Mae left, then...leaving the boy to his thoughts. To his crushed heart...to every mistake he had ever made, now not even a speck of dust in his life, because of this. The boy slammed his fist on the table next to him, as a few tears slid down his face. "Gone?" He thought. "She can't be. I can't believe I let this happen!" He shook his head, not letting anyone see his tears, and walked out the same as Mae, his date missing a ride...and his heart missing it's other half.

Reawakened Memories [[..-Chapter One-..]]

[[..-Emily, 17-..]]
[[..-Mae, 17-..]]
[[..-Jayden, 18 (without wings)-..]]

June 10th, 2007

California

Summer Vacation/ Shore

4:50 pm

Emily's dirty blonde hair rushed in the salty wind of the ocean, the smile on her face unmatchable. "Scott! Let me go!! Scott!!" The laugh that rang out was warm and beautiful, a bell like quality.

"Oh, I'll let you down...into the water!" Scott laughed as well, as he headed toward the ocean, carrying the struggling girl in his arms.

"No!! Don't! I just dried off!" She kicked and squealed, but to no avail, but Scott only laughed again, and placed her down gently in the sand, sitting next to her.

Emily looked over at him, sticking her tounge out and splashing him with water from the waves that just missed her pink bikini bottoms. A few people were gathered around...the beach party symbolizing the end of the year was just beginning...there would be more. Emily stood, brushing the sand from her legs and bikini bottoms. "I'll be right back, ok? I'm going to get them to start some music!" She laughed and ran off towards the D.J, but stopped as the polyphonic ring tone of "girls just wanna have fun" rang loudly. She turned, and noticing she was right next to her spot, and her things, she reached inside and pulled out the cell phone.

"Hello?" ...

The person on the other end ran a hand through his night-black hair, letting a soundless sigh escape his lips. His heart beat a bit faster as the young woman picked up. Her voice was as sweet and soft as ever. He gulped, pushing back the fear rising in his chest. What he was afraid of, though...he wasn't sure.

He took a deep breath, and opened his lips, and...slowly...the words came. "Emily? Is that you?"

"Well, who else would it be?" She laughed. "This is my cell number...why? Who's this?"

He nearly winced at that laugh...he always loved that laugh. "It......It's...Jayden."

Emily gasped as the phone nearly fell from her hand. She put a hand to her chest...the shock made it hard to breathe and the memories flooding back made her head throb. They had always only been friends....but something about him had made her fall in love....that something had never left. She shook her head and regained her composure. "Jayden...how did you get my number?"

"An old friend of yours finally gave in....but that's not the point. Em...we need to talk."

"Don't call me that!" She took a breath as she felt tears come to her eyes. "I gave up that nickname when I gave up on you. What do you want?" Her voice shook...she hoped he didn't notice...

Jayden really did wince this time, as he heard the pain in her voice...he could tell. "Em...please don't cry. You know I can't stand it when you cry."

"I said don't call me that! And what's this all about? Now you care, after you left me wishing all night long at the dance, only to crush my heart as you come in with that slut Kaitlynn? What do you want?" She really was crying now, tears running down her face. She shook her head, and moved away. Scott couldn't see. He'd hunt this guy down like a wolf hunts a deer. She ran into the parking lot, stopping by her car.

"I want to talk to you, Emily. Please just let me have this one last chance..."

"I gave you your last chance, Jayden! Don't push this on me now! I've finally forgotten about that day, about what I felt for you, and now it's all just coming back like the waves I live for. Jayden, don't do this to me!"

"Just one more Emily...that's all I ask. Please just one more chance." The voice was pleading, hopeful and pained. She took a deep breath, pushing back her own pain.

"How, Jayden? You're all the way back in Virgina! I'm not going back there just to have my heart ripped out again."

"I know....and you won't have to. I'm here...in Cali."

She took another breath...this was all too much. "Fine....meet me at the beach tonight. You'll know which one by all the highschoolers and the beach party. We'll go somewhere no one can bother us and you'll have a half hour to convince me of...whatever it is you want to convince me of. Deal?"

Relief washed over Jayden with the force of a typhoon, and he sighed, the hugest smile on his face. "Deal. It'll be worth your time. I promise."

8:17 pm

Emily took a deep breath as the music pounded in the background. The tempo not even near as fast as her heart. She closed her eyes, waiting for the one she used to love. She sat beneath the docks, the moon and stars shining bright, making the water shimmer and putting a milky white glow on everything it touched. It was beautiful...it always was out in Cali. At least...on this beach. People always turned off their lights for beach parties. That didn't matter now, though. She took a strand of her dirty blonde hair and started twirling it nervously on her finger. She stood, and walked to the ten foot tall, four foot wide post that held up the docks. Leaning on it's side, she stared out at the water, the moon now casting it's milky spell on her as well. She paused, her breath stopping and her heart skipping a beat as she heard footsteps in the sand behind her.

"Emily?"

"Yes, Jayden. It's me. Now go ahead...tell me what you need to tell me." She turned to him, and her breath stopped again, her eyes wide. He was gorgeous. She closed her eyes a moment, only to open them again, her heart still crashing like the thunder of a summer storm in her chest.

Jayden stopped short as she turned to him, his heart skipping a beat the same as hers. She had grown, and grown beautifully. The moonlight shining in a crystal glow behind her, illuminating her like a goddess, only added to the effect. And those eyes....still as deep and warm as ever, were filled with pain he had never wanted to see.

"Emily..." His words were a whisper, as he jogged up to her. He didn't evne have a clue how to begin. "Emily, I....I never wanted you to leave. You know that, right?"

"Well it's too late for that, Jayden. It's been two years. I'm not coming back."

"I know...I know. That's why I'm staying here. At least...for the summer."

"Jayden...what are you doing? You made your decision. Don't come back now."

"But I didn't, Em! I didn't! You thought I did!" He sighed, and as she turned away, he only turned her back, looking into her eyes. "I only went with her because her parents didn't want to see her going with an older guy. Please Em, you have to believe me. I went there for you. But....you had already left before I got to you."

Emily's eyes flooded with tears again, as she pulled herself away and turned to the ocean. "Don't do this to me Jayden. I have a boyfriend...I don't want..."

"You don't want what?"

"I don't know what I want! I just...I thought this was over...Please Jayden, just don't do this to me."

"Emily..." he took her chin in his hand, turning her face to his again. "Emily. I love you...I've loved you ever since that year. And watching you walk away, I realized just how much I needed you. I havn't been able to forget you, Emily. I've thought about you every day for the past two years. I've had girlfriends, but I left them all, because the only girl I've ever wanted is you."

Emily winced and shut her eyes, forcing herself away from him. "I can't, Jayden. I can't do this. My heart can't take it anymore..." She turned away, ready to go back to Scott...but a hand clasped gently around her wrist. She turned back, and Jayden pulled her into him, looking deeply into her eyes. "Just..." His lips came closer to hers, and soon, she felt the breath on her face. "One more chance." He whispered against her lips. He leaned down just a bit more, and his lips touched hers. She weakened at the touch, her heart pounding and her cheeks turning bright red. Tears streamed from her eyes as she fell into his arms. He pulled her closer, and kissed her with more confidence, seeing as she didn't push away. They were like that for what seemed like eternity, but only a few seconds, when she finally put her hands against his chest, and pushed away.

"I can't, Jayden! I....I can't..." She turned then, and ran into the crowd.
