this is official. I was going to write it in official leetspeak but that takes too long.

every forum needs a geek thread and we are all geeks here, right? (no nerds!!! we are geeks)

so, math, science, language, lit, history, music geeks... blab away in your area of specialty!

of course math geeks are better than the rest. blaugh

has anyone tried this month's AMS problems? i got #2 in less than 10 minutes and cant even understand the rest! xp

yup... i guess we all are...

so, for a start, solve this. i really need to go work on more mathy thingies but classes and the internship and gaia are eating away at my math life.

In the game of Incan basketball, a points are given for a free throw and b points are given for a
field goal, where a and b are positive integers. If a = 2 and b = 5, then it is not possible for a
team to score exactly 1 point. Nor is it possible to score exactly 3 points. Are there any other
unattainable scores? How many unattainable scores are there if a = 3 and b = 5? Is it true
for any choice of a and b that there are only finitely many unattainable scores? Suppose a and
b are unknown, but it is known that neither a nor b is equal to 2 and that there are exactly 65
unattainable scores. Can you determine a and b? Explain.

alright as for the first part
you can make all even numbers and all odd numbers past 3

let´s see you can´t make 1, 2, 4, or 7
i think it´s fair play for anything past that

no, you could have 3 and 6
and never be able to make any number that is not divisible by 3
therefore infinitely unattainable scores
