It was in that time, an age before
The race of men were free
When men and beast and mystics were
In war for freedom to be,

Twas in that time, when war began
That I would now disclose
The life of one of dragons born
And the name, each dragon knows

I ask then to remember all
Each name and color scale
Of each in this dark tragedy
And pray my mind won’t fail

The first was Aslanar himself
And dark grey were his scales
With red rimmed eyes that mothers still
Will tell about in tales

His twin the golden Seratol
Born both of one large egg
Known only for her bravery
And the power of her leg

Her brother Androcalaton
The flaming red was he
Gone down in blazing glory hot
In battles we shall see

Then Ictonidus of the blue
The battle never saw
But fell as an example made
To those who challenged law

The rest refused to name themselves
They would not help defy
So in their chain they died in shame
And nameless they shall lie.

Grand Aslanar, himself thus named
To break the cursed bonds
The first to name, the first to try
Resistance in response

His sister fell, the first to die
Our freedom for to win
They born both of a single egg
The truest form of twin

Her body turned to vapor swift
She lived and then was gone
Thirty and more would fall as well
Before we saw the dawn

Poor Aslanar did watch her fall
Evaporate, his kin.
And he did feel the deepest pain
Of any in that din.

He fought the fight of vengeance then
And fought to free her soul
So no more should die in bondage there,
We paid the bloody toll.

‘Tis bitter work, to win one’s life
In fields or in the sky
‘Tis lonely work, to keep one’s life
While all around you die.

His brother Ictonidus then
Fell to the master, foe
Though what the Krainin made of him
We never more shall know

He died encased in chains and light
Reflecting off the blue
Killed physically then dragged away
The martyr that they slew.

Then Androcalaton, the red
To battle flew away
And burned a dozen Krainen fools
Upon that self-same day

He fought them from the front line strong
He battled from the air
He trumpeted his name out loud
The boldest form of dare

A month into the war had passed
When Androcalaton was felled
Laid low and turned to dust they say.
The line without him held

And when the war was finish there
The Krainen truly gone
The dragons turned to form themselves
A new and brighter dawn

They formed a wizened council where
They spoke of rights and truth
They swore they’d never wear again
The chains they wore in youth

Then he of many forms did rise
To make a ruler just
Who’d serve to guide the empire
A leader they could trust

And Aslanar spoke then to all
“All that I’ve loved, I’ve lost
Save this, the freedom we have won
Yet I paid greatest cost.”

“That you have suffered dear my fried
No dragon here would doubt
What would you ask the council friend,
That we may see about?”

Thus did respond the Dakalnar
The one who changes form
And Aslanar made this request
In the calm after the storm.

“My family all have sacrificed
Themselves to win us free
To defend the rights we fought to win
I ask you to change me.

To make me silent as my kin
And life that does not end
And make me then unstoppable
By walls or shields or men

So nothing then can hold me off
From those who would enslave
And I’ll defend the work of those
Who lie now in the grave

And one last thing I would request
My mind, please take away
Destroy my painful memories
Of each dark killing day

I’ll carry no dark bias then
No interests of my own
And no more painful suffering
For Aslanar, alone.”

Thus it was then the council grant
The final tragedy
In Aslanar’s long life of pain
The phantom came to be

And still the will of council keeps
And still he does not die
Still through stone and the magic shield
He passes where he’d fly.

And still the soul of Aslanar
Keeps watch over us all
His phantom form defies the gates
He keeps his silent call

And in his mindless duty when
Someone forgets the need
To fight to keep our freedom then
And save the dragons’ creed

He rises from the depths of earth
And flies swift to be judge
He passes through the walls and shields
To carry out his grudge

With claw that cant be warded off
And teeth that cant be stopped
To rips apart the traitor who
Upon the floor is dropped

Then fades away into the ground
To wait alone and rest
Bound ever to his duty here
Poor Aslanar the best

The first among the dragons true
The grandest of us all
The one who sacrificed himself
To save us from the fall

The one who gave his right to die
Condemned to life unceased
Tis he the guard of true born rights
Who’ll never be released.
