i hate theory but i like composing. awkward ain't it

I studied rudiments from a book published by Frederick Harris...then history from "The Enjoyment of Music" (Norton) and harmony/counterpoint/analysis from some huge texts that I don't remember the name of. XD Those were for RCM theory exams~

In uni, I used Grout & Palisca's "A History of Western Music" (Norton) for history. No textbooks were assigned for theory, but we had coursepacks and tons of handouts/musical examples given to us by the professors. ^^

I don't really have skills in composing, but I do like orchestrating/transcripting music :3 Instrumentation and Orchestration classes were among the most fun I've ever had last year!

I've been focusing on composing so much that im behind in theory, but i suck at Figured Bass...who really understands that?

I study ABRSM exercise books, and just a few from RCM syllabus. I forgot most things so I can't say which is better. redface

I have a working knowledge of it... I play harpsichord continuo in one chamber group every semester for Collegium Musicum at school after I've learnt the basics in my second year, lol. ^^;

RCM? Where are you from, Junee? (hope you don't mind the question!)

RCM- Royal College of Music

I've done my ABRSM grade five theory (it's obligatry if you want to do any further grades really), and had to retake... Yeah, theory is not my forte. Well, I'm better at it now as I've actually had a chance to use it, but still.

Hm, I don't think I've ever actually studied from any books unless you count my revision guideXD

Oh, RCM I mean Royal Conservatory of Music. Sorry about the confusion. That one is when I arrived in Canada.

Are you still in Canada then? I always had the impression you're American, for some reason, even though I don't think you've ever said it explicitly anywhere? XD

Nice! It must have been like 10 years ago since I've been in Ontario (LOL), but I'm hoping to go on an Eastern Canada trip in the near future. After I graduate, maybe. XD

Now that we've gone so off-topic, I'll throw another textbook name out--Adler's "The Study of Orchestration" for orchestration class (duh).

Um, right now I'm using a lot of ABRSM stuff, as I'm about to do my Grade 5, seeing as I want to take higher practical exams. However, I use the "A B Guides" and many other books for reference.
