Here's a place where you can ask what specific terms mean. If we get enough people posting, I might put up a word for each day from my AP11 vocabulary list. It's good to know these words so you can use them, and literary terms are good for analysis' when you write papers. You'll need to use these words in high school and on the SAT.

Quote of the Day: "Activism is a virtue"

Today's word:
Carpe Diem- Seize the day! This is usually to characterize a writing technique or the tone, mood, voice of the piece. Actually, you can use this to describe anything.
Example: Catcher in the Rye is carpe diem in the end, but in the beginning, the main character is very negative and never lives for the day, but reflects on all the bad aspects of life.
I don't care if you agree with that or not; it's just an example.

The "internet word" of the day:
OOC: out of character
If someone says your story's main character is OOC, you need to go back and support and round out your character better. Readers usually have their own opinion about characters, but as long as you can make the characters believable, it'll be okay. biggrin

Another word of the day cuz I'm bored:
Connotation- the implied meaning of a word
Example: Fat has a negative connotation, since it sounds like you're making fun of someone
On the other hand, big-boned has a connotation that makes it sound like it's an excuse.
Bad examples....
Opposite of "connotation" is "denotation"
Denotation- the dictionary meaning of a word

Connotation of "murder"- bad connotation; evil, ARGH
Denotation of "murder"- unjust taking of a life

Ambiguity- An author is ambiguous if he/she is vague. Ambiguity in writing is generally used to create double meanings and to widen the range of interpretation for a reader.

Tip of the day: In my journal on this forum, I'm putting up a paper I wrote on how to write fanfiction, so if any of you are aspiring fanfiction writers, look there for tips!
