I just sketched freeform with a mechanical pencil. I haven't taken any art classes since elementary school so I'm mostly self taught. The picture is Rei Hino from Sailormoon.

I think the major problem is that it looks flat; you aren't using any anatomical guidelines or base shapes and that really hurts it, plus her proportions are a little off-- her shoulders are small and her chest is huge; not uncommon in anime but not so much for Sailor Moon.
Hope this helps!

I agreed it does look flat so in essence, i'm saying the same thing, but i'll add this: use some lighting effects they will help bring perspective and dimmension to your art.

I think it looks great! mrgreen The hair and clothes all pull and run in the same direction and have texture, to the best that lineart can do. The only thing I see might be in the face, the eyes are a little far from the center. :3 Other than that, it's a good basic anime style and I like it. Probably a lot better than anything I could do. 3nodding

I Like it. The only things I can see wrong is the blotchy color of the hair and the slightly odd space amount between the nose and mouth. I can see that the two things might be planned and if they are then it works well(I dont' know the caracter so i couldn't say). You are an amazing artist.

Overall, I really like it. The face shape is too rigid and her mouth is too close to her nose, though. I think if you fix up her face, though, it'll be just fine. Her hair is gorgeous.

Not bad for a self taught artist. I agree with the others that it needs some shading for 3 dimensionality. Are you planning on uploading a new pic soon, so people can see your progress?
