My brother is in the marines. My friend Joe is in the marines (he leaves this month for boot) My fiance, who tends to be a pacifist...is thinking about joining the marines.
Now, my family has a proud military history. My Grandpa fought and was injured as an island hopper in WWII. My other Grandpa was in the Army, after the war stationed in Germany. My Dad, and Uncle were Navy, and my cousin Abraham is Navy. When I was little, all I ever wanted to be was a Navy officer with a ship of my own. (I've since realized that there are many ways to serve my country, not just military).
But my fiance, he's thinking about joining, and I'm not sure its the right reasons. He wants to fit into my family more, that's for sure. But also...well, I don't know, he won't really talk to me about it. I've told him that I'll support him no matter his decision, but I really don't know what to do. He asks me for advice, because I'm the military child, but I have no idea what to say. If he's not military, he wants to be a pediatrician, but he's torn between the two. Personally I think he'd be better as a doctor.
What can I do?

You're fiance can still join the army and be a doctor. In fact, he can join the Army Reserves in a medical field. This will allow him to run a more normal civlian life on top of serving if its what he really wants. And he can get more expierence with the field of his choice as well as have the Army pay for him to go to college.
Really, you need to force him to talk to you about it. He has to understand that if you two are planning on getting married, what he does is going to effect you as well. I know that at first, it was a struggle to get my fiance to discuss things with me. He wanted to figure it out in his own head before he included me. But one night I just put my foot down. I told him I would support him no matter what he choose to do, but he was to start including me in the disscussion and ideas right away. He had had his recruiter come to the house when I was at work one day, and that upset me. I had wanted to be there for that I didn't even know that it was going on. So the next day he called, had the recruiter come back, and we all sat there and discussed things. This helped me out a lot.
Just let him know that you want to be included, and that it hurts you that all he really does is ask you questions but not share his reasoning.

Thanks a lot, this helps. I'm almost positive it will be the same thing for the Marines. I know that its amazing the amount of people I run into who say that "Yeah, I was in the Marines".

Hey can be a Marine doctor but he would have to join the Navy and be a Corps Man since the USMC doesn't have it's own doctors.

Keep in mind, unless he already has his phd, he will go in as enlisted. No matter what branch he joins. Here's how it works, as far as picking your job in the military. You have to take an entrance exam. Depending on how well you score, tells them what jobs you're qualified for.
Now here's the kicker, not all branches let you pick your job! The Army is the ONLY branch that will let pick your job 100% of the time. The Navy comes in 2nd with approx 80%. Followed by the Airforce, then the Marines. This is all based on what you score on that entrance exam.
He can get into the medical field, but he won't be a doctor right off the bat. He can go to college while he's in, get his degree, and become a doctor that way.
