General - Luna Lovegood was born in 1981 to magical parents. Not much is known of her until her fourth year at Hogwarts, the 1995-1996 school year. Luna was a year behind Harry Potter at Hogwarts - the same year as Ginny Weasley. A Lovegood family is mentioned as living near the Weasleys in Ottery St. Catchpole; this family may be Luna and her father.
Luna first met Harry Potter and his friends on September 1, 1996, on the Hogwarts Express. Harry and Neville were looking for a seat on the crowded train when Ginny ushered them into a compartment containing only Luna and introduced them both to her. They were later joined by Ron and Hermione. At the time, Luna was sitting in the train compartment absentmindedly reading an upside-down copy of The Quibbler with her wand tucked behind her ear. This behavior, though odd, was completely normal for Luna and thus indicative of her nature.
A quirky girl with many talents, Luna is skilled in magical arts and crafts and is known for her peculiar fashion sense. When Harry first met her, Luna was wearing a necklace she'd made out of butterbeer corks. Later that school year, she made a lion's head hat that roared very realistically for the Gryffindor Quidditch match against Slytherin. Another time that school year she was seen wearing a pair of earrings made out of radishes. Luna is not ashamed of her peculiar clothing or her unusual beliefs. She unabashedly shares her faith in unlikely things such as Nargles, Blibbering Humdingers and Crumple-Horned Snorkacks, even planning to go to Sweden to hunt for Snorkacks with her father during the summer of 1996.
Luna is oddly unaffected by the hustle and bustle that takes place around her. She is serene, thoughtful, and often gazes off into the distance. She is also utterly unconcerned about the opinions of others. Although her atypical beliefs and habits make her the target of laughter and mockery, she does not compromise herself to please others. Though aware of the teasing that takes place behind her back, Luna does not retaliate or try to defend herself. Instead, she coolly ignores it, and seems truly unbothered by its occurrence.
Luna came by her odd and fantastic beliefs very honestly. Her father runs the wizard magazine The Quibbler, which prints unlikely and often ludicrous stories. The magazine does not stick purely to fiction, though. When the Daily Prophet, under pressure from Cornelius Fudge and the Ministry of Magic, refused to believe that Voldemort had returned and instead devoted many articles to slandering Harry, Luna asked her father to run Harry's story of the Dark Lord's rebirth. Mr. Lovegood did so and was delighted with the publicity it generated--amazed that people were even more interested in Harry than they were in Crumple-Horned Snorkacks. Perhaps more importantly, though, the article's being printed resulted in the choice of many witches and wizards to side with Harry against Fudge and the Daily Prophet. The edition quickly became Mr Lovegood's best selling issue.
Luna joined Harry's Defense Against the Dark Arts club, Dumbledore's Army (DA), during the 1995-1996 school year. When Harry was tricked into believing that Voldemort was holding Sirius captive in the Department of Mysteries, Luna was a part of the group that helped Harry break into Dolores Umbridge's office and use her fireplace. Harry was caught doing this, as was Luna, Ginny, Hermione, Neville, and Ron. Apprehended by Umbridge and her Inquisitorial Squad, Luna was the only one who did not fight back against her captors, instead looking rather bored with the proceedings taking place around her.
When Luna, Ginny, Ron, and Neville managed to escape from the Inquisitorial Squad and join Harry and Hermione in the Forbidden Forest, it was Luna who suggested they use thestrals to travel from Hogwarts to the Ministry of Magic. While some of the others didn't seem too keen on this idea, Luna managed to ride her thestral side-saddle with ease. Thanks in great part to Luna's idea, the six of them made it to the Ministry of Magic. Inside, they found the Department of Mysteries and discovered that they had been lured there under false pretenses. Luna was the only non-Gryffindor to take part in the battle at the Department of Mysteries. She was also the only one apart from Harry to emerge from the fight relatively unscathed.
Luna takes her hardships with quiet acceptance. When her housemates steal her belongings, she simply puts up notices asking for her things back and waits patiently for them to turn up because, as she says, they always do. It was, in fact, as she was putting up such notices in June of 1996 that Luna ran into Harry and managed to provide him with some comfort. The death of Sirius in the Department of Mysteries had understandably left him distraught and guilt-ridden, so much so that none of his close friends were able to console him. When they met by accident, Luna told Harry about witnessing her mother's death as a child. She also told Harry that while she missed her mother, she knew she would see her again one day. After talking with Luna, Harry felt better for the first time since Sirius's death. She was able to console him at a time when no one else could reach him, securing her place as one of his friends.
Luna continued to play a role in Harry's life during the following school year (1996-1997). Luna has an uncanny knack for telling the embarrassing truth in a very matter-of-fact manner. For this and for the loyalty and kindness she shows to others, Luna earned Harry's respect. Harry saw Luna comforting Hermione after Ron's hurtful comments had her in tears, and in a moment of spontaneity, Harry asked Luna to accompany him to Horace Slughorn's Christmas party that December. She gladly accepted and awaited the day excitedly. While they went merely as friends, her off-the-wall, deadpan comments made Harry grateful he had asked her. At one point, she began her trademark odd dialogue with Professor Trewlawney about the Rotfang Conspiracy, enabling Harry to escape and spy on Draco unnoticed. Harry had a wonderful time at the party with Luna as his date.
In the spring of that year, Professor McGonagall chose Luna to commentate a Quidditch match. Luna spent more time talking about the players she liked and pointing out interesting cloud patterns than she actually did announcing the game, but her commentary made for the most interesting match of the season.
At the end of the 1996-1997 school year, Luna and Neville were the only two DA members to join Hermione, Ron, and Ginny in patrolling the Hogwarts corridors the night Death Eaters invaded the school. She and Neville were the two DA members who most missed the meetings, so they had rushed to help Harry and the Order when they were needed. Luna fought in the battle, and Ginny implied that if it weren't for Harry's Felix Felicis potion, it is likely they all would have been killed. At Dumbledore's funeral it was Luna who helped an injured Neville into his seat. They sat together to pay their final respects to their fallen Headmaster.
Luna is a kind witch who cares deeply for others and, despite her odd dress and peculiar beliefs, has a very good heart. She is loyal and intelligent, and seems quite capable of protecting herself in a fight. It is likely Luna will have an important role to play in the battles to come and in the conclusion of the series.
