My horse had hoof wall separation about a month ago but it seems to be growing out along with any cracks that the hoof had.

The frog is healthy and the rest of the sole seems alright. But she sometimes doesn't want to put any weight on it. She'll always hold it out in front of her and I noticed a few days after it started being sore that there was some slight swelling around her tendon but that's when it seemed better.

The swelling is gone now but she still doesn't want to put much weight on it even though she is walking much better.

Does anybody have any idea what it could be?

Ok I just found this out when I checked on her today. Her hoof almost looks like its falling off. Its in the area of the heel bulb and I don't know what to do. I don't want to have to put her down! Anyone know of ANYTHING I can do? dramallama

Hun, call your vet!

I'm not an expert, and I havn't had to deal with many problems before, especially things like this - but from the information given, it sounds like laminitis (founder).

http://www.acreageequines.com/HorseCare/horsecare5a.htm

But like I said, I'm no expert - that's why its very important to have your vet out!

When there was hoof wall seperation, did you get the vet out or anything? If so, what did they say?

When something isn't right, ad you don't know what to do or in doubt - call the vet.

WE did have the farrier out and he said that might be what it is. He wasn't sure but he said it was leaning more towards the hoof wall seperation and that it may do this. I'll ask my parents if they can get a vet out but they might just say its not worth the money and to put her down! I don't want to cuz she's young and I'm sure she could be saved but they won't listen to me. I'm desperate!

If they won't get the vet out, do it yourself. I'm not sure how old you are, but call and tell the vet the situation and that you need him out right away.

If the vet isn't called, it could be very painful for your girl. I don't know how bad it is since I can't see it in person... but she may only be suitable for pleasure riding in the future (can't say for sure.)

Plus, unless your parents have another way to do it, the vet will be out to put her down right?

Yes she probably would call the vet to do the deed and yes she could examine it then but they might say "There's nothing u can do, she's in pain etc." and not listen to me. I'm not sure what it is but I might have an idea. It could be white wall disease or just a bad case of wall separation but darnit, I WANT A VET FOR MY HORSE!!!! scream And I will place the call myself if I have to. I don't want her to have to go through any more bull#@%! cuz my parents won't do her the favor of a second opinion and a second chance! Like I said, I WANT HER TO SEE A VET LIKE RIGHT NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Ok, I feel a bit better.

Rant all you need to. I know and understand the frusterations of parents. Only the vet will be able to tell you for sure.

My parents have no say in my horses care. I pay the bills for the horse. He's also in my name, so they can't legally sell him, put him down or make any decisions. Also, my bill of sale from when I bought him has my name for amount paid - not my parents. Otherwise I would have the same problem, but I have a bit of a source of income.

Keep fighting for your girl! she deserves every chance. Show her you care and help her out when she needs it most, and she'll return that to you. Keep fighting for her! she can't speak so you have to be her words.

She can speak....just not english.lol! My dad's a big horseman but he won't do anything either. Anyway her foot looks like it might be doing a bit better. If I'm lucky do you think it can reattach it self and heal? I'm putting on moisturizer so its not so dry and is tougher to crack and I'm picking it out everyday to keep pressure off the sole. She was acting like her usual bratty self today when I went to see her and she is walking normally.

It sounds like it's pretty bad, if you can't have your vet out there, at least call the vet and ask how to handle it, although the vet will probably want to come and check it out anyway.

Ya. I'm stopping in town today so I'll ask for some advice from them to. My dad says if it takes 1000 dollars to save a fifteen hundred dollar horse he doesn't want to spend the money. But I have a back up plan. I didn't want to get a job this summer but I will to pay off vet bills. Or if they pay for it for now, I'll pay them back by getting a job through the rest of summer and winter.

Maybe she's alittle tenderfooted, when my mare got her first barefoot trim, she never had her frog touch the ground. Before she was shod for shoes, but she dosen't need them, she was alittle tender walking on the driveway and the gravel/dirt road. She's better now but stil has a few problems, she'll get them. She probably never felt her frog touching the ground.

Your horse's hooves/hoof is probably alittle tender from all that, if the problem continues call the vet.

Hope she's all right now ^.^

Thing is she's never had shoes before and I can clearly see where the outer wall is separating. Its strange though cuz it doesn't seem to hurt her at all right now. But its also really muddy which is probably helping lots. But thanx for ure concern Kitsune!

^.^ Yeah, my horse never had shoes, I think.

Yeah my farrier told us, where her water bucked is, let it overflow to made it alittle muddy, it's acting like a natural hoof moisturizer. ^^

I got back from a vacation just yesterday. I was a little worried to leave her but I checked her quickly when I got back and it doesn't seem to be any worse. It does need a trim soon though. We have the farrier semi-booked so he'll come out when we call him and trim up her hooves for us. My dad could but he doesn't trust himself and I don't really know how exactly to do it without making the damage worse.
