I have difficulty dealing with them, but for me, its because of the voices that are assigned.
In one particular case, I remember a 14 year old girl's voice being deeper than a 29 year old woman's voice, and in that same anime, the male "villian" had a fairly pleasant, not very deep, voice. Hardly threatening, he seemed somewhat morbidly friendly. Conversely, in the Japanese version, his voice was very deep (deeper than any natural Japanese male voice I've heard), and he seemed very threatening.
I didn't mind Slayers or Slayers Next's English crew, until I saw the Japanese version. However, Slayers Try's Filia's English voice bugged me so much I immediately switched it to Japanese.
Other than the random Adult Swim episode (all two or three I've seen by dumb luck), its been over 5 years since I've heard an American crew.
