I think I'm having thyroid problems. About a half year ago I weighed 145. I'm 5'1, and muscular. That was about right. In the past few months it shot up to 170, with no change in diet or excercise. Now, in about two weeks, it moved up another 10, again, with no change in diet or excercise.

I'm going to go to the doctor to get my thyroid checked when I get insurance through my job, but I was wondering if anyone had any ideas that I can try before that, that don't involve fad diets. (I actually GAINED trying Atkins.)

Water. Water, water. I know you hate that idea, but water. Drink water before every meal, water after, as much as you can hold. But if you gain like that for no reason, doctor is your best bet. Herbal weightloss remedies are dangerous, usually because the weight you shed is due to loss of water in your body. Look for things that increase your metabolism (DO NOT use Ephedra (Ma Huang), it's dangerous.

But that sort of weight gain is definitely something to see your doctor for. Don't put it off, it could be dangerous. Thyroid issues, endocrine disorders, POS, all can cause rapid weight gain for "no reason." Get it checked out.

well, my handy-dandy nutritional healing book says that kelp is super-duper good for hypothyroidism, which is what you'd have if you were gaining weight. They also say that L-Tyrosine is good. It says to take (for an adult) 500 mg twice daily on an empty stomach w/ juice or water and NOT with milk. It says you can take it with 50 mg vitamin B6 and 100 mg vitamin C for better absorbtion. I know the kelp would be good even if you have something that's not related to hypothyroidism and from what I'm reading about the L-Tyrosine it would be good for you too. Low plasma levels of tyrosine have been associated with hypothyroidism as well as low blood pressure and low body temperature (like cold hands and feet). It's also been helpful for people who suffer anxiety, depression, low sex drive, allergies, and headaches. Natural sources for it include almonds, avacados, bananas, dairy products, lima beans, pumpkin seeds, and sesame seeds. People taking MOA's for depression should limit their intake of those things though.

Dietary considerations (from my book):

Include in your diet: apricots, dates, egg yolks, molasses, parsley, potatoes, prunes, raw seeds, and whole grains. Eat fish or chicken and raw milk and cheeses. (Raw milk, hehe)

Eat in moderation: broccoli, brussels sprouts, cabbage, kale, mustard greens, peaches, pears, radishes, spinach, and turnips. (It says that if your syptoms are severe to omit these foods completely because they might further suppress thyroid function. Maybe you want to avoid them for a little while.)

Avoid: processed and refined foods, including white flour and sugar

Avoid: fluoride (including what's in toothpaste and tap water) and chlorine (often in tap water). Chlorine and fluoride are chemically similar to iodine so they block iodine receptors in the thyroid gland.

Well, that's about all I can give you. They also recommend bayberry, black cohosh, and goldenseal (for no more than a week.) And they recommend Gentian and Mugwort extracts for hypothyroidism. I'd try the dietary additions first though, they sounded more promising.

Be careful with black cohosh if you're monthly cycle is irregular. It stimulates uterine contractions and can cause miscarriage in pregnant women and the onset of your period in not-pregnant women, if you're close enough to that time.

It's possible to buy Apple Cider Vinegar tablets which help with weight loss/control.
They're also simple to take. I believe you just take one with a glass of water either before or after a meal. (I can't remember which right now. sweatdrop )

Of course you should check with a doctor before taking them, especially if your weight gain is not normal.

(But you do have to be careful when taking them. If you decide to ignore the directions and warnings, you can run into problems such as blood clots.)

Too much water is a bad thing. If you drink more water than you loose then you'll lower your body's salt levels and it will make you not well.

Not really. I mean, yes, that can be true, but in our world, if you eat any sort of canned or processed food, you get more salt than you need. Read the back of a can of soup- *reads off the can* Lets see.
There's around two and a half servings per can, and most people I know eat the whole can- so that's 2 servings, at least. Per serving, there's 890mg of sodium (salt), which is 37% of your daily intake needed. So, doubling that, you get 1780mg of sodium, around 74% of your daily intake. (This is Campbells Chicken Noodle, by the way. *waves can* My fave.) Now, that means that in one meal, you get nearly all the sodium you're supposed to have in a day. Now, say that was your supper. Say for a snack between meals, you have tuna. Again, there's about two and a half servings of tuna per can, and most people will eat about half a can in a sammich, or a whole can on crackers. One serving here is 10% of your daily intake of sodium, bringing you up to 84%. If you eat the whole can (around 2 sammiches), that's 20% (rounding down.). That would be 94% of your daily intake. (for the sake of rationality, lets assume you only have half a can. (This isn't counting mayo if you use that, or pickles, if you use them, or crackers or bread. This is just plain old tuna.)
Now, for breakfast you had... lets say Crispix, a nice healthy cereal. Just 1 cup of cereal (one serving) has 9% of your daily intake- with milk, it's up to 11%. So that would be 95% of your daily intake.
Now, for lunch, you're in a rush so you grab some Maruchan ramen, chicken flavor. That's 35% of your daily intake per serving- only theirs 2 servings per bag, and msot people eat a whole bag. So that's 70% of your intake there- that brings you up to 165%.
And maybe there were some chips in there, just a handful- one serving. 12 chips is another 9% of your daily sodium. Now you're at 174%.

So you've eaten a total today of 174% your daily intake of salt- and this isn't even a high-salt estimate. This is rounding down and picking foods that are considered "healthy" and still convenient. (Excepting the chips and ramen- both of which are convenient but not exactly "healthy".) Now, today you've eaten almost twice your required amount of salt.

The required amount of water for a sedentary (not active) person is 8-12 cups per day- about 64oz every day. This is for not-active people in a cool environment.

To show that I'm not being an UTTER brat, I did find reference to how much water is too much- here, from dietician.com, is a quote.

(XD I told my husband this fact (a hardworking, very physical-labor-intensive man), and his eyes got wide. He's lucky to drink a gallon a day!)

I know that there are antibiotics you can take, but until I get a chance to go to the doctor, is there anything other than Cranberry juice (which I already know of) that I can use to help?

Hm. Ooh, wait! I -think-, (if you have what I think it is) that there's an over-the-counter med for it. Forgive me if this is too personal, but is it the burning, itching "I think I'm going to cry" sensation, all the time?

Yup, though not all the time...it's especially bad right after I use the bathroom, or if I'm beginning to need to, and moreso when I'm standing.

Hit your local pharmacy and ask for "AZO". What you do is take it (as directed) and then drink water. Just keep a bottle on hand, and drink, drink, drink. All the time. The more you drink, the more you have to pee, and as you pee (over time) it washes the med through your system and makes you feel a million times better. Trust me, if you wait to visit the doc, you'll be crying before you get there. It takes about four hours to work at first and then about twelve to be totally effective, but it works.

I'll definatly have to try that out. Is that a cure, or a hold me over until I can see the doctor.
