Why Dorothy and Toto went over the rainbow: -- {SONATA} --The (Un)Official Death Note thread @ FreefallSonata sucks when it comes to titles... I figured, since we have five Harry Potter threads, what's one Death Note thread? I need a thread abode for my latest obsession, so here it is. P.S. I have seen the Random Fandom guild, but have not browsed on its forums, so if there is already another thread like this, I apologize. Just...copy and paste your answers or something.
DISCUSSION TIEM, GUYZ: -Death Note -Manga, anime, or movie? -In terms of the anime: any seiyuu who impressed you? -More anime: How on crack the 2nd opening is. -Which ending is the best out of all of them? -Favorite character? lulz, that was hilarious. xD
-Death Note Sexiest thing since shinigami. -Manga, anime, or movie? Manga since I've yet to finish the anime or see the movie. -Favorite character? Least favorite? MELLO. -fangirls-
That one newscaster lady that was 'chosen' to represent Kira, or something. D:l< -Which character do you relate to most? Relate to the least? Misa because she let's herself be blinded by 'love' and kind words.
L because I'm lazy and I would give up on the first day. :3 -Do you share any habits with one of the characters? I like strawberries... D: -Which character's life would you desire the most? Raito's for the fame and popularity. -The twisted crazy logic in Death Note that makes sense in its own little way: What do you think of it? A welcome refreshment from all the crappy series out now. -If you happened to stumble upon the Death Note without any preexisting knowledge of it, what would you do? If you would use it, then on whom? I'd use it on my step mom, without any kind of hinderance whatsoever. -Do you support Kira? ...I really like the concept, yes. D: -Who do you think represents justice? In all honesty, Raito. -Who do you think represents "good" and "evil"? One of the things I really like about this series is that there is no defined line between 'good' and 'evil'. Like how Raito is not 'black and white' bad, and L is not the epitome of 'good'. -If you possess any envy for L and Mello in eating so many junk food and not getting fat. What do you mean, Death Note isn't real? JUST KIDDING. I HAYT DEM CARTOONS. O:< -How awesome Wammy's Justice Club is. =D It's even got its own comic series, fanart, fanfiction, and even a store! Totally serious. o_o It does? ouo -Pairing ships MelloNear. : D -Was recently mistaken Sonata foolish in thinking that the fandom would be made up of mostly intelligent people? We've all been there. I guess all mindless fangirls need is a series with cute people. :l That's all. Nothing more. -am I a mindless fangirl?- x] -...And how insane Sonata is by making this so freakin' long, but that's the kind of person Sonata is. =) I had much fun replying to it. heart

In fact, I don't think I like any Raito pairings.

^ I HATE MELLO/NEAR. BRING ME MOAR MATT/MELLO, KAITHNXBAI.
-Death Note I want one. D=
-Manga, anime, or movie? All three. Haven't seen the movies, technically, but the guy who plays L makes it awesome.
-In terms of the anime: any seiyuu who impressed you? I can't even watch the show without laughing because... IT'S ******** TAMAKI. XD
-More anime: How on crack the 2nd opening is. My brain died a bit the first time I saw it.
-Which ending is the best out of all of them? Anime. Did Light so much more justice. -Favorite character? Least favorite? Favorite: MELLO. < 3 Least favorite: NEAR. GTFO YOU WEIRD-EYED LITTLE FREAK.
-Which character do you relate to most? Relate to the least? Uh. None, really.
-Do you share any habits with one of the characters? Mello and I both share a chocolate addiction.
-Which character's life would you desire the most? Matt. I'd do Mello. XD
-The twisted crazy logic in Death Note that makes sense in its own little way: What do you think of it? More anime need Death Note's lack of logic. They'd be more logical that way.
-If you happened to stumble upon the Death Note without any preexisting knowledge of it, what would you do? If you would use it, then on whom? Depends. Can I use it to feed someone to a tree?
-Do you support Kira? Nah. But I do love his character.
-Who do you think represents justice? L.
-Who do you think represents "good" and "evil"? No one. The show has so many shades of gray that labeling them as good and evil is to black and white.
-If you possess any envy for L and Mello in eating so many junk food and not getting fat. What do you mean, Death Note isn't real? JUST KIDDING. Actually. I have no envy for them at all. Because I'm the exact same way. I live off of junk food and I eat quite a lot of it but you know what? I'M UNDERWEIGHT. Srsly, I weigh 87 lbs.
-How awesome Wammy's Justice Club is. =D It's even got its own comic series, fanart, fanfiction, and even a store! Totally serious. Matt's in it, so that makes me happy. No if only Near would just magically disappear...
-Pairing ships MATT/MELLO FOR THE WIN. GTFO NEAR.
-Was recently mistaken Sonata foolish in thinking that the fandom would be made up of mostly intelligent people? No.
-...And how insane Sonata is by making this so freakin' long, but that's the kind of person Sonata is. =) You're forgiven. =D

-Death Note Should have a sequal called "Life Note" surprised
-Manga, anime, or movie? Manga and anime.
-In terms of the anime: any seiyuu who impressed you? I really don't know the seiyuu's, but I liked L's voice. He did Subaru in the OVA!?
-More anime: How on crack the 2nd opening is. 10 tons of crack.
-Which ending is the best out of all of them? Both are good.
-Favorite character? Least favorite? L is my favorite and the coorporite Kiras are my least.
-Which character do you relate to most? Relate to the least? I guess Light with his school status and grades. I least relate to Misa with her love-sickness.
-Do you share any habits with one of the characters? I guess similar to Near with toys since I always am seen with a stuffed animal.
-Which character's life would you desire the most? L.
-The twisted crazy logic in Death Note that makes sense in its own little way: What do you think of it? Wow.
-If you happened to stumble upon the Death Note without any preexisting knowledge of it, what would you do? If you would use it, then on whom? I would think it's just a silly little prank and leave it where I found it. If I used it, I wouldn't have anyone in mind to kill.
-Do you support Kira? Somewhat yes, but absoulutely no.
-Who do you think represents justice? Not really anyone. They each have their own good and evil things.
-Who do you think represents "good" and "evil"? Both.
-If you possess any envy for L and Mello in eating so many junk food and not getting fat. What do you mean, Death Note isn't real? JUST KIDDING. Lol.
-How awesome Wammy's Justice Club is. =D It's even got its own comic series, fanart, fanfiction, and even a store! Totally serious. Nice.
-Pairing ships I didn't really see any romance in Deathnote, but Lxcake FTW.
MattxMello is okay.
-Was recently mistaken Sonata foolish in thinking that the fandom would be made up of mostly intelligent people? Not that foolish. There's enough good fans to have a good discussion.
-...And how insane Sonata is by making this so freakin' long, but that's the kind of person Sonata is. =) Heh.

Why Dorothy and Toto went over the rainbow: -- {SONATA} --'Kay guys, I'm going to answer this. Beware, because I'MMA CHARGING MAH RANTINGZ! (which is precisely why I <3 Death Note so much, it makes me go into "ANALYZE HAPPY!!111!!1 8D" mode) Some of them are copy-and-paste, though-so if you've seen them before, say "hi," because it's me. =D
Oh, and maybe you wouldn't mind listing why you support/do not support Kira, who do you think is justice, etc...? I'd really like a full-fledged discussion on this, because Death Note is easily one of the few series in which one can do that, and I plan to take full advantage of it.
Death Note Probably one of my favorite series-on the surface, it's a riveting mystery story that can be a little dry sometimes; but delving deeper, a psychological thriller; and even more a philosophical fable. At least, that's the way I see it.
Manga, anime, or movie? I prefer the manga and the first arc of the anime. The anime's second arc was really undeveloped. I've yet to see the movies. I would've, if only I had a plan to go to the last Anime Expo with my friends...*sigh* D:
In terms of the anime: any seiyuu who impressed you? I would say all the Kiras, because it amuses me so much that they're mostly all a part of Ouran. xD
But specifically, I must applaud Mamoru Miyano for progressively doing a good job. Take the evil laugh, for example. The first time he did it, I was like, "Awww! How cute, the genius pretty boy is laughing manically~!" And then episode 37, when he laughed, I was like: "THAT'SJUSTPLAINCREEPY. o.o" More anime: How on crack the 2nd opening is. I'd agree with you, Alice and Subaru. I still prefer the first opening: passionate and cineamatic-and the use of Michelangelo! (if you've notice, there's one where Ryuuk and Raito reenact the one painting of God reaching to Adam in the Sistine Chapel; and Naomi Misora holding Raye Penbar's corpse a la Pieta) Not to mention the political undertones. Raito = Right; L = Left; Raito has red hair, L has blue hair. WTF. But the second opening does capture how insane and mentally down-spiralling the series becomes, though. Even if it does make me go "WHUT?" everytime I watch it.
Which ending is the best out of all of them? I prefer the anime because it goes easier on Light-o, but the manga is the better one, because of the SWIMMING LESSONS! 8D he does recieve what he deserved.
Favorite character? Least favorite? I would have to say Raito (I just prefer Raito to Light, it's more aesthetically pleasing to say and they're basically the same meaning so there is that irony) and L.
I don't really like Raito as a person, even through his faults, you've just got to admire his determination. But he's just so interesting. He's comparable to Raskolnikov (of whom I'm a mad fangirl for <3 ) from Dostoyevsky's Crime and Punishment-the similarities are so the same it's scary. Main difference is that Raito doesn't go through the complete mental breakdown that Raskolnikov goes through. Not to mention, I saw art of Raskolnikov by a Japanese artist and he SERIOUSLY LOOKED ALMOST LIKE RAITO. I seriously go into rants whenever that's mentioned, complasting (combination of "comparing" and "contrasting") the two. The philsophical concepts that Raito presents are amazing, though...Machiavellian consequentialism, Thomas Hobbes's Leviathan, Nietzsche's Ubermensch are all there, and more I have to discover. Sadly, I have become a fangirl just based on this. What a psychologist I'll be. "OMG, you have problems...OMG MARRY ME!" <.<
And L...who seriously didn't love L (don't answer, rhetorical question)? He's such a unique character. I just love the fact that he could deduce major turning points in the case over a piece of cake. He's also an interesting pyschological study, some fans have suggested that he might've had Asberger's Syndrome. And I cried, when you know...
Doesn't mean I don't love anyone else, though. There's only a few characters that I truly dislike in DN.
Addendum: WARNING FOR SPOILERZ. Even though I love L to bits, I think Raito might be beating L, though by a little bit. D: Basically because I feel more sorry for Raito-moreso in the manga. I mean, L got a good death-I mean, if I was a Death Note character, I'd rather die like he did (though I'd rather not die at all, but this is if I was forced to choose, haha). But basically because he got what he wanted (his last words were something like "I knew it...Raito is Kira.") in the first place, and even if he died at a young age, he had changed the world for the better a bit, by solving mysterious and puzzling cases he put the world's most notorious and dangerous criminals behind bars. It was necessary for him to die, it gave a serious boost to Raito's ego, making more corrupted than he had been, and since he considered Near and Mello inferior to L, it makes his downfall even harder. And besides, L's legacy lives on-he had three very fine heirs to avenge his death (and deducted enough clues so that they could catch Kira); Near is succeeded as the new L, and of course, in the hearts and minds of his fans. smile So what L died for was not in vain. Same with Mello and Matt. Also cried too when they bit the dust (gosh, I think I've cried for every major character death)-but it helped Near get the missing pieces to finally trap Kira.
I couldn't say the same about Raito, though. In the epilogue, I think Matsuda or Aizawa remarks on how the world just goes back to normal again. I MEAN, GOES BACK TO NORMAL AGAIN? After all Raito's hard work to achieve his goals, the crime rate did drop, but then rises again...it's like Kira didn't exist at all. Which brings me to my second point-I don't think Raito was becoming Kira just because he wanted to become a god, but by becoming a god, he could prove his own existence. He dies unredeemed, just a murderer. In the anime, he regrets what he has become (which makes it less depressing for me), but in the manga, he dies begging pitifully for his life from Ryuk. So it discourages me, to see this genius with such great potential, to be wiped off the face of the earth, to use that expression. Except for the creepy Kira cult people. Seriously, is there any relatively sane Kira supporter?
More addendum: I have to add a third favorite character now: Anime!Mikami. Notice I said anime. He's such a prima donna in the anime. xD From the "sakujorgams" to the "KAMI!!1!!111!1" to the pwnsome hair to his suicide scene reminiscent of Kill Bill, he basically stole the scene of every episode he was in.
But my least favorite character...Demegawa. He just pissed me off and was annoying. At least he was a minor character...I mean, unlike other Kira supporters, he doesn't have the cuteness or the pity that Misa has, a cool car chase scene that belongs to Higuchi, Mikami's intrigue (not to mention Demegawa's pens probably don't radiate awesome blue and red laser beams that Mikami's pens do), nor the possibility of an Ouran High School Kira Club that Takada completes. Conclusion: He was just like...ugh. He was just in it for his own gain, and seemed more like a caricature.
Which character do you relate to most? Relate to the least? Well, according to all the Death Note personality quizzes (save for two) I've taken and even on stamping/rating LJ communities, I should be relating to Raito the most. D: It scares me-especially when I thought about what I'd do if I had no knowledge of the Death Note and suddenly stumbled upon it, I'd kinda turn out like he did (DON'T KILL ME). But counting up all my stamp/rate votes, I'm 46% Raito, 20% Naomi Misora, 13% Near, 13% Mikami, 3% Mello, and 3% L. Doesn't add up to a hundred, stupid decimals.
I relate the least to Ryuuk, of course, as an awesome character that he is. I'm not a bluish-gray shinigami and I hate apples.
Do you share any habits with one of the characters? I've trained myself to unconciously put my thumb in my mouth when thinking and doing exaggerated hand-writing movements when nobody is watching, does that count?
Which character's life would you desire the most? I basically took this question from one other Death Note survey, and I agree with that one person I saw that had said Aizawa's daughter, because the worst thing that happens to her is seeing her dad cry. Everyone else just seems so miserable. D:
The twisted crazy logic in Death Note that makes sense in its own little way: What do you think of it? I love it. I prefer it to fighting scenes, to be frank.
If you happened to stumble upon the Death Note without any preexisting knowledge of it, what would you do? If you would use it, then on whom? I probably would use it more than once...and let the power get to me, admittedly. D:
See, I think Raito was right in saying that the Death Note has power that everyone would be curious about trying, even once. We know that killing is ethically wrong in society-or at least, we believe that it is-and so I'd imagine that something of the Death Note's caliber, where you can kill people without a trace, would look irresistable. It's like when your parents told you not to do something, but you did it anyway because you just wanted to see what it feels like, to rebel against current. And if one gives in to that temptation without getting caught, it will make them want to do it even more. And I think everyone has a Kira inside of them, too. Here Raito is also right (haha), saying that if a discussion in a classroom somehow turned into "Is it right to kill someone evil?", then everyone would say that it was wrong, but secretly believe it. We do all long for a perfect world-or at least a life without conflict-the question is how strong that desire is, and is it strong enough to blind us from reality?
Considering all this, going back to what I'd do again. So I'd test it out, like some people said, on people I feel that the world would be better without-if some rumor about a random celebrity takes up more time on the news than an important world issue, then great, all the more to vent my fustration. And then I would probably test it a second time, to prove its authenticity. When I do find out that it is true, then I would feel some guilt-after all, I had become a murderer just by scribbing down a name-but then I'd get over it and say that I was chosen (kinda like Raito did, before he knew that Ryuuk was doing this just because he was bored) to do this-it's not like anyone would leave a supreme weapon of absolute power in my hands without having some relation to myself. And I would go on a little mini-crusade, killing for utilitarian good whereas I had never done so otherwise. Not on just criminals like Kira did-I think I should like to maintain a alliance with the police force and the justice system-but people I would think are beyond redemption...not judgement per se, it's more like I'm trying to prevent society from being more corrupt than it's supposed to be.
Though if I were not limited to just humans-and instead could dispell ideas, then I would really jump at the chance to use it-I'd really love to eliminate hate, ignorance, etc. from the world and create a new utopia, but rationally thinking, with a utopia, humanity just wouldn't...recieve a fully human experience of living in the world. No one would know that it's the perfect world because they haven't known the imperfect world.
But if I have preexisting memories of Death Note like I do now...pssh, I'd use the Death Note totally, no doubt about it. Even more than Raito. Because having real Death Note = AWESOME COSPLAY OPPORTUNITIES~! [/trying to have a sense of humor here]
Do you support Kira? No, because it's rather harsh, IMO. His ideals and desire to make a new world maybe, but no. I wouldn't be anti-Kira, either...because I think, like Gandhi, "An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind." (Yeah, I know I just said that I'd use the Death Note on criminals, but I told you, I was trying to think of what I would do if I didn't know anything about it-the Death Note could easily warp one's personality and rationality, and that's probably what it would do to me, being full of human fallacies) What if someone commits a crime because they think they're doing good for society, and then Kira kills them because he thinks he's doing good for society, while investigations are going on to plan to execute Kira because they think they're doing good for society. Anybody else see something extremely twisted here? Anyways, if I was on the investigative team, I would think that Kira was trying to tell us something, that the force is too ineffective, or criminals shouldn't get away so easily. So I'd propose that the force not cooperate with Kira, but work independently to prevent crime and make an effort to rehabilitate detained criminals, and then if it actually goes down, try and negotiate a deal with Kira. If that doesn't work, and then it would be time to take more drastic measures.
Who do you think represents justice? No one. And I'm not saying that because I'm a relativist, either. As I've seen another rant before, I agree with it: the main "theme" of Death Note is that "justice" does not exist. Sure, everyone has their idea of justice and will carry it out accordingly-but if it did exist, then why are the characters in conflict at all? Both Raito and L thought they were the embodiment of justice, and they both ended up dead. It just goes to show, without our morals and ethics to keep us in place, the world would be very chaotic indeed. Who do you think represents "good" and "evil"? What I think is that one of the major themes of Death Note is that there's no good nor evil "side" in Death Note-they're just all too human. What a reader's philosophies on ethics and morality are will most likely influence them in the way they view the Kira side and the L side. The fact that I've seen a variety of Death Note fans being pro-L, pro-Kira, and many more in a gray area probably just proves it more. If Ohba truly wanted to make Raito evil, Raito would've been depicted and implied as such. If Ohba truly wanted to make L evil, L would've been depicted and implied as such. What keeps both of them from being defined into plain, black-and-white categories is that they both have the pure, abstract motive of absolute justice (which would obviously land in a "good" category) that conflict other's idea of absolute justice, it's just their methods that are questionable. And like some other users mentioned, their "justice" motive, even if they blatantly claim it, is most possibly just a cover for selfish reasons. Raito wants to reign as a god of that new utopia that he wants to create-you see in the first chapter, he acknowledges the world as a meaningless, rotten mess, but his immense self-righteous pride keeps him from acknolwedging his own life as "meaningless" and "rotten," so what better way to prove your own existence by becoming something omnipotent, controlling, and eternal? And L...I don't know, probably does it because he thinks it's interesting? We all know what happens to a genius with an idle mind, and I've mentioned him before, his name is Kira. It's because L's such an enigma, it's hard to know what his true motives are. But since, like Tracius posted, he also uses questionable measures to acheieve his goals, the fact that "he acting out of justice" is questionable. And either way, I don't think those can be sorted into one or the other. I think it's like trying to see if Javert from Les Miserables is good or evil; it's purely subjective.
If you possess any envy for L and Mello in eating so many junk food and not getting fat. What do you mean, Death Note isn't real? JUST KIDDING. Yes, I do. D: And Alice too, because you're a real person, proving that it is possible.
How awesome Wammy's Justice Club is. =D It's even got its own comic series, fanart, fanfiction, and even a store! Totally serious. BEST. DN SPIN-OFF SERIES. EVAR.
@ Ling: Here it is. 8D
Pairing ships I don't really have any strong ships...I tend to gravitate more towards the slash side, though, because even the mainstream slash pairings could be considered pure crack. And when done well in a fanfiction, it could turn out to be really interesting and amazing (Serria's fics come to mind, as well as Harley Cooper's).
@ Subaru: Oh noes, that reminds me of the R-rated LxCake fic that I saw in capslock_dn. Arrrggghh. As I've said before on the Ed thread when "EdxSpork" was suggested, curiousity killed the cat's mind. D: Was recently mistaken Sonata foolish in thinking that the fandom would be made up of mostly intelligent people? Thank you for comforting me. The A/M/C is like...full of DNtards, I never thought there was so many! But I still love the Death Note fandom on Livejournal, though. As I've said before, it's full of pretty graphics, purely hilarious crack, and glorious discussion paragraphs that stretch for miles. =D
@ Ling: IMO, you're not. You're a hardcore fangirl, but you can think.
...And how insane Sonata is by making this so freakin' long, but that's the kind of person Sonata is. =) My journal entries are worse. ninja

Why Dorothy and Toto went over the rainbow: -- {SONATA} --OMG. I'm sorry, everyone who has to sit through that. I didn't expect it to be that long! I was too lazy to edit it, plus it was all important to answering the questions anyway, right...right? I'm sorry for the double post, too. To blow off Auntie Em!
