Consumed by Darkness
Section 6
"How could you harm her?" Nathan asked angrily. "Because of your weakness for her," Zendrith said maliciously. "Zendrith, if you intend on taking her with you, you better think again!" Nathan said, placing Naminae on the couch behind him.

Closing his hands into tight fists, his eyes seemed to glow red. "Yes, feed your anger, you shall be an excellant asset to my plan, but for now I take leave of you." Zendrith said, disappearing into the shadows.

"I failed you Naminae," he said, tears seeming to want to fall without fail, yet kept them in. She moved slightly, and Nathan quickly arrived by her side. "Are you alright?" Nathan asked hesitantly. She moaned in reply.

Taking that as a no, he looked for a puncture wound or bruise of some kind. The scent of blood canceled out his other senses. "Naminae..." he said softly.

Turning her over carefully, as to not harm her further, he saw the blood instantly. A star-shurikan was firmly implanted in the small of her back. "This may hurt a bit," he said softly, placing one hand near the wound and the other on the star-shurikan itself. He pulled sharply, removing the shurikan in one movement.

The blood began to flow faster and he ripped the bottom of his shirt to make a quick bandage to soak up the blood. Everything was red with her blood. "Naminae, hold out, you'll make it through this," Nathan said, sitting down beside her.

She moved a bit more, just enough to turn over. "Nathan..." she said softly. He looked to her with hope. "I don't want to die...just yet," she said closing her eyes. His heart beat faster while everything around him slowed down.

Her pulse began to drop and her breathing became ragged. "Damn you Zen, I would have given you anything not to kill her," he said, letting a tear roll down his cheek, which landed on her forehead. She opened her eyes and smiled weakly up at him.

"You don't have to do anything for me, I'm useless to the world anyway," she said softly. "You aren't useless to me though," Nathan said as calmly as possible. "You are more than what other people credit you to be. Never forget that Naminae."

"Nathan...you don't have a clue as to what those words really mean," Naminae said sitting up slowly. "But I do Naminae, you yourself don't give yourself enough credit for what you do. I can see through the flaws of the way you go about doing things. Anything you set your mind to, you can achieve," he said, taking her hands in his.

"I'm glad you think so, but the truth of the matter is, I've already given up," she said, her eyes avoiding his. "My life is worthless, and probably always will be."

"Why do you say that? When you stay with something, you master it eventually. I still have one thing I'm trying to understand, but hopefully I'll understand why it responds the way it does. I'll keep up with it, research it, and become its equal," Nathan said, thinking perhaps he worded the way he felt wrongly.

Puzzled, naminae looked up to him, her eyes searching his for an answer she wanted. One in her favor perhaps. "What is this...thing you are trying to understand? Sounds like a...a..." she trailed off as her mind began to try to fir the puzzle pieces together.

Nathan waited for her to finish her answer, but when one wasn't said, he sighed, disappointed. "Maybe I should go," he said, getting ready to stand up.

"No, don't leave me, never leave me," Naminae said, grabbing his arm gently to keep him from leaving. "Naminae? What...are you doing?" Nathan asked, having never seen her like this before now. "I...I...I need you, here, with me," she replied, her body shaking with the effort to stay constant.

"Why do you need me? You've never needed anyone else before now..." he trailed off himself, seeing a slight change in her. He raised her gaze to meet his. Without even thinking, his lips briefly touched hers. When he realized she hadn't pulled back, he kissed her again, pulling her body closer to his.

"Is this what you meant?" Naminae asked softly when he had paused for a moment. When he didn't answer back, she sighed and looked away. "Naminae..."he said a moment later. "This is exactly what I meant."

"Which means I'm the one you don't understand and wish to understand. I'm the one...you want to become an equal to," she said, a slight smile creeping across her face.
