Once I was eternal,
A God amongst Gods,
No fear, no pain, I lived,
I lived, I lived.

One evening I saw you,
You called for something,
Just a whisper from your lips,
That leapt onto the wind.

So I came to you,
I left what I knew,
Gave up what I had,
And I came to you.

The passion, the passion,
The fiery passion,
The spark of life, of love, of raging desire,
Such an inferno, a wildfire.

Though not even gods can control all of fate,
And you turned your back,
I don't know why,
You took my heart, and for that I cry.

It's been a long time now since you turned away,
Some days we talk, but there isn't a lot to say,
You burned your bridges, put up walls, barred the gate,
I swam the oceans, climbed the mountains, trekked through deserts and forests, yet you still won't let me in, and now I don't know how.

Thunder storms have raged unrelenting in the night,
For hours? Weeks? Months?
I sat with Old Man Apple Tree as the lightning strikes came down,
In the morning I felt a calling and went upon my way.

I crossed through valleys and over mountains,
To the lush plains,
That's where it was, at the centre of the scorched earth it laid,
It was broken and burned, but still alive.

I knelt and held the angel in my arms, looking straight into its eyes,
"We missed you" was what all its eyes could say,
I held it tight, I held it close; don't let it slip away,
It sighed a word, a simple word, a word it knew I'd hear.

"I can't" I said,
"I'm scared" I said,
"I want to run away", I began to cry,
It looked me in the eyes and my heart turned to ice.

I raised my head,
The grass that once grew here was gone, the earth was scorched,
A thousand angels lay, broken, burned, life ebbing away,
And all their eyes, their lips said the same.

One thousand whispers,
One single word, one thousand broken hearts,
One thousand tears, one thousand fears,
One thousand dying angels, with only one word.

I looked out as the tears welled up,
"Why?"Was all I could say,
And the one word came back,
Again and again, each time different, but each time pure.

They felt it, for me, and I for them,
And yet I could not express it,
I held the angel close, its life slipping from my grasp,
It looked at me, "LOVE", it whispered.

"LOVE", I replied,
The point was made,
I loved and was loved, but as their lives slipped away I wanted to ask, I wanted to know,
Lightning flashed and with that they were gone.

I looked to the sky, darkness had set in,
In my hand was a flower, the head of a red rose,
I breathed it scent deeply and it washed over me like a tide,
I love and am loved in return, love is a many faceted and splendid thing;
A thing to be held close, but never tight, cherished but never constrained,
Love may be granted or taken away, but love, love will never be understood.

"Do you love?" asked Old Man Apple Tree,
"I'm not sure," I replied,
"I think you do," he said, "You’re just not sure if you’re ready to be loved in return.''
We sat, we watched, the moon set, the sun rose, the sun set and the stars came out.

But where is love?
What is love?
Who is love?
And,
Who am I?
