A young girl from a poor and starving village disguises herself as a boy and joins the King's Guard at the age of 17. For years she has been able to keep her identity secret, until that is war broke out and she was issued to the front lines. Amelia, under the name Lucas, was captured by the enemy and taken back to their capitol and thrown into a dungeon to be held for ransom. Her guard, one of the king's own men, notice something strange when she was sleeping. Amelia's hair had fallen out of it's bindings and tumbled down around her face and shoulders. Her guard immediatly informed the king of this and Amelia was ordered to be guarded even more heavily. But her first guard kept her company, talking to her, and sneaking her extra food.
At the end of the war she was released but was forbidden to go back to her home country and forced to stay in the country that had taken her prisoner, forced to live in the palace where the king planned to make use of her. Her guard in prison became her loyal friend, and the more time she spent with him, the more her feeling changed from hatred to admiration.
