Have Fun!
Boredom Barometer: Are you bored already?
You frantically counted the days ’til school let out. You couldn’t wait to say adios to math equations, book reports and science projects. You sat in class daydreaming of beach volleyball, partying at a friends house and going to hawaii. One more day of Project Runway reruns and you might pull your hair out. And every time you complain to mom, she spazzes out or assigns you tons of chores. Reality has set in quickly—you can’t believe you’re already uttering those two dismal words: “I’m bored.”
1 Summer rains that last for days make you:

a) give in to the little girl next door who’s been begging you to play a game of dominoes.
b) decide to sort through your stamp collection.
c) use the sleep sofa as a trampoline.
d) sink into your inflatable chair and count the glow-in-the-dark stickers on your ceiling.

2 Sentenced to an hour in your room, you fantasize about:

a) having your buds over for a huge backyard barbecue bash.
b) becoming Frodo of Lord of the Rings.
c) swimming 50 laps at the rec—maybe even 100.
d) eating a double-chocolate-dipped donut covered in nuts.

3 You’ve been moping around the house for days when Mom says, “Find something constructive to do or clean the basement.” You:

a) call up every single person in your phone book, even your Great Aunt Gladys.
b) create an awesome new way to make fruit-flavored ices.
c) invent a game of crumpled paper b-ball with your brother.
d) say, “Forget it, I’m too tired,” and then get relegated to the basement, where you do a lazy clean-up job.

4 When your friend invites you to spend Fourth of July weekend with him/her, you:

a) ask if you can stay all week.
b) pack your new vifeogame
c) put new bearings in your in-line skates—you’ll be needing them!
d) bring along a library of tear-jerker movies and a box of tissues.

5 Your parents say you can make plans to amuse yourself while they’re away on a business trip, so you:

a) invite your three best friends to move in.
b) ask for a trip to Great Adventure.
c) sign up for daily karate classes.
d) buy a boxed set of meditation tapes.

6 When the family you sit for goes away for three weeks in August, you:

a) ask them if they need a friend to go along.
b) decide to open a lemonade stand on your front lawn.
c) plan to take daylong bicycle trips.
d) listen to depressing music while reading The Diary of Anne Frank for the fifth time.

Only the Lonely
You’re friendly and outgoing, the kind of person your buds enjoy hanging with. You’re a person who is happiest when you’re around people and thrive on interacting with others. If you get bored when flying solo, what you may actually be feeling is loneliness. Bustin’ Boredom: Think about enrolling in a day or sleepover camp, where you’ll be surrounded by other people. Or organize get-togethers with friends you know from school. You might use the time to see buds you don’t get to see often, like those who live in other towns or people you met at youth group or through sports. Visiting cousins or grandparents can also be a bright spot during long summer weeks. When visiting in person is impossible, you can always rely on good ol’ email to keep in touch. Try to keep things in a healthy balance, however. Since you will surely find yourself alone for stretches at some points in your life, learn to enjoy your own company. It can be rejuvenating to have some solitude or down time.

Mind Tripper
You’re a person who thrives on mental challenges. You get bored when days are long and stimulation is short. Sitting around for days on end is definitely not for you. It’s not that you can’t relax in the sun, but too much lazing around makes you feel like your mind is turning to mush. Can’t have that! Bustin’ Boredom: To feel better, rev up your gray matter. Think about all the times you’ve said to yourself, “I wish I could do that, but I don’t have time.” Now that the heat is here, the time is ripe! Make a list of some things you’d like to tackle this summer. Set reasonable goals that’ll be fun, and don’t freak if you don’t get to all of them—after all, you’re not being graded. If you’re a serious reader, dig into that 500-page novel that’s been sitting on your shelf. Get a cool 3-D puzzle that you can set up on a spare table and work on whenever you feel like it. Why not learn to bake a delicious peach pie, make Origami figures, or even conquer fractions once and for all? Whatever you do, you’ll enjoy it that much more when you’re inspired. Hope we’ve helped.

Get-Up-and-Go kid
You’re attractive because you’re active. You’re the sort of person who gets bored when unable to move freely. Even the thought of a long car ride brings on hives, and days indoors are definitely not for you. You need physical challenges. Exercise and competition make you feel good. Bustin’ Boredom: Being on-the-go rids you of boredom because it releases feel-good neural hormones called endorphins. So spend the summer doing all the things you love—hiking, fishing, jogging. And muster up the courage to try new sports, such as caving. Set some goals for yourself, such as increasing your stamina, improving your tennis serve, finding out what yoga is all about or earning the next swim badge. When the sun’s not shinin’, take a walk in the rain. Or get into an indoor activity, such as mini-basketball, foosball or ping-pong. If you’re by yourself, no prob. Try a dorky exercise tape, hit a tennis ball against the basement or garage wall, or learn to juggle. Still yawning? Volunteer to do the yardwork. Mom will fall over.

Desperado
You may enjoy being alone, and that’s OK. But you may isolate yourself by being mopey or down. Some girls say they’re bored when what they’re really feeling is depressed. If you find the comfort of your bedspread appealing for hours on end, troubling emotions could be bubbling under the surface. Bustin’ Boredom: If you don’t recognize your feelings or can’t express them appropriately, you might be zoning out—like a couch potato. Some people grab junk food for comfort. In more serious situations, people do harmful things to themselves to deal with hurt. But these tactics don’t make things better and usually bring on more problems. Don’t wait until things go over the edge. If you’re sad or worried, figure out what’s causing it so you can do something about it and move on. Talk to a treasured friend or write in your journal. If you can’t figure out what’s bothering you, ask a parent or other trusted adult for help. Hopefully, you’ll find a way to deal so you can step outside your bedroom door to discover all the awesome things there are to do.

Enjoy and tell me your results wink
