As she walked down the street trying to be on guard for her pursuer her eyes saw a familiar face in the crowd of people that was around her. It was Alex, just like he had said he was back now. A smiled went across her face instantly seeing him then suddenly she noticed something new. The look on his face.

He was running towards her, or at least trying to, as the crowd of people prevented a full run. The look on his face was agonizing and she couldn’t understand why until Alex yelled at her. She couldn’t make out what the words were but putting it together with the expression on his face she spun around bumping into a man that was standing behind her.

Her breath caught in her throat and she didn’t have to look up to know who it was, the feeling in her stomach told her everything. Sarah started to hunch over gasping for air but the man held her up with the knife in her stomach. “I’m terribly sorry about that.” The man purred into her ear as he twisted the knife in her stomach and pulled it out slowly letting her feel every new cut the blade made.

After that the man was gone, swallowed by the crowd and leaving her stumbling aimlessly forward holding her stomach where she could now feel the warm blood. It trickled down her stomach and drenched her shirt causing the emerald green to turn a deep cherry black.

There was a new feeling now on her hips and then wrapped around her pulling her back before she fell over and slowly she started to hear all the people around her once again. She looked up and noticed that others had now seen that she was bleeding a few children were hiding behind their mother who was trying to cover their eyes. Hearing the frantic cry of her name she looked around her as her vision blurred in and out. She couldn’t see who was calling her name but when she felt the ground on her knees she realized that what had caught her waist was a person. Sarah looked down seeing the hands that held her and an instant shot of pain went through her. On one of the hands was a simple string tied around the left ring finger. Suddenly she knew who it was and could hear his frantic voice behind her trying to tell the police the street names for an ambulance.

When she heard the phone click shut she was shifted. Sarah was leaned back being held up with his left arm and his right was brushing the hair from her face. She could see the tears that were in his eyes building up and then she noticed the streaks down his cheeks of ones that had already escaped. It wasn’t till now that she noticed he was talking to her.

Sarah could see his lips moving and sounds that were coming out but none of it seemed to make any words. It was like she was being held under water with someone yelling at her. Alex’s eyes were agonizing as he looked at her. His eyes shifted from her face to her stomach from time to time but he tried to keep them on her face. It wasn’t until now that he saw her hand move when he was repeating ‘you’ll be ok’, for the hundredth time, as it rose up and her fingers brushed across his cheek bone while a faint smile spread across her face. He reached up with his right and took hers lacing his and her fingers together as if it would keep her there with him. The tears that were built up in his eyes now overflowed streaming down his face as he leaned over her holding her as close to him as he could without moving her to much.

The ambulance finally got there, 15 minutes after being called, Sarah was unconscious and her body temperature was cooling rapidly. They managed to pry Alex off of her to attempt to stop the bleeding that hadn’t receded yet but soon after put her on a stretcher and then into the ambulance. Alex quickly stopped a taxi as the ambulance was pulling out and told the driver to follow it in a choked voice. When he got to the hospital he threw the money to the driver and climbed out quickly running in through the doors.

When he reached the counter he asked where Sarah was giving them her name, the woman behind the counter said that she was just brought in and was in the emergency room now, and that someone would be told he was there. Alex nodded and went to the waiting room sitting on the couch. He closed his eyes and held his head in his hands crying again until he couldn’t anymore.

When the doctor finally came out Alex jumped up like he had for every one that had come in so far. The doctor stood there for a moment looking at the people in the waiting room then walked over and called Alex’s name. Instantly Alex was in front of him nodding.
“I’m Alex. Is Sarah ok?” Alex asked him anxiously and anyone could tell by the sound in his voice that he was already positive she was gone.
“You might want to sit down.” Was all the doctor would reply until Alex shook his head.
“No, please just tell me… Did she make it through the surgery?” Alex asked again even though now he was positive that she was dead, all that was left now was the clarification from the doctor that was standing in front of him.

As the doctor told Alex what he already knew he stared blankly past him not seeming to really hear all the words just the ones that he knew were coming already, ‘we couldn’t get the bleeding to stop in time… she lost to much blood… the wound was to deep… I’m terribly sorry for your loss…’. Those were the only things Alex really fully heard.

The doctor looked at Alex concerned for a bit unsure if he was in shock by the look on his face that was completely blank. “Alex?” The doctor said to catch his focus. When Alex finally looked at him he continued. “We will keep her here until you are ready for a funeral… For now though go home and rest, we will contact the rest of her famil….” He stopped for a moment. “Does she have any other family?” The doctor then asked Alex who shook his head. The doctor nodded and put a hand on his shoulder. “We did everything that we could to save her… Go home and rest…” And with that the doctor had to get back to his work.

When the doctor was gone Alex stood there for a few minutes longer completely froze. After that he went out and got a taxi and told the driver her address out of reaction. When the taxi got there Alex gave the man his money and got out of the car still seeming to be out of it. Walking up to the door he raised his hand to knock on it then shook his head knowing no one was going to answer.
He took out his key unlocked the door letting himself in for the first time since the day he had left. Once he was inside he closed the door and looked around. He looked at the kitchen then the living room and the fire place. Alex stood there for a bit longer then walked in and sat on the couch. For a while he just sat there staring blankly at the chair she had always sat in but after a bit he couldn’t take it and his eyes overflowed with tears and streamed down his face.
