I got into the house as quietly as possible and went into my room. After I set my bags down I turned and saw Sparx at the door. My heart jumped. He had the biggest smile I had ever seen.
“Pet! You're home!” He came up to me and hugged me, picking me up. “I missed you.” He set me down and I noticed something black and fuzzy on his shoulder. It had two yellow eyes.
“Um... There's a...” I pointed at it.
“Oh! Meet Shadow. I got a kitten two days after you left.” He picked the kitten off of his shoulder and held it up to me. I took the kitten from his hands and held it.
“ Aw, she's cute.” I smiled and petted it's head.
“It's a girl?”
“Yeah. You didn't check?” He laughed.
“I'm sorry but if I was an animal I don't think I would like people looking down there to find out what I was.” I laughed.
“So you waited till I got home?” He nodded. “Figures,” I sighed. “Marty says Hi... and that she still hates you.”
“Yet I still don't remember what I did,” he mumbled.
“You turned her garden into man-eating plants and they tried to eat her neighbor.” He laughed. “Did you find all of my notes?”
“I hope so. How did you get the notes into the school if you didn't go?”
“I did that the night I left. It's easy to get into the school.” I sat on the bed still holding the kitten and he sat next to me.
“You planned it all out?”
“You were gone for hours. I needed something to do.” He shrugged. We sat there staring at the kitten.
“Did you ever figure out what you wanted me to do for you?” He nodded. “Are you going to tell me?” He shrugged and I elbowed him.
“Alright, alright. Are you ready for it?” He was trying to add suspense and it wasn't working. “I want you to kiss me. While I'm awake.”
“I knew you were going to make fun of me,” I said.
“I'm not making fun of you. I mean it.” He stared at me.
“Why?”
“Just kiss me already,” he sighed. I didn't make any movement so he grabbed the back of my head, pulling me close and kissed me. When he let me go he was smiling. “Thanks, love.” He kissed me again and picked up the kitten.
I couldn't move or speak.
“So... That's what it should have felt like the first time you kissed me,” he sighed and placed the kitten on his shoulder. “Night, Pet.” He kissed me one last time and left.
*******
The next morning went well. He was up before me, sitting in the living room, playing with Shadow. I walked in and yawned a good morning.
He turned and smiled at me. “Good morning, star shine. The earth says Hello.” He stood up and walked up to me then kissed me on the cheek.
“Just because you kissed me last night doesn't mean that you can kiss me whenever you want.”
He frowned at me and tilted his head to the side. “Why not?” I was getting frustrated. He smirked after reading my thoughts.
“Don't you ever get tired of messing with me and my thoughts and feelings? I get tired of it.” He frowned again.
“I don't mean to hurt your feelings or anything.” He paused and picked up Shadow so she would stop bitting his toes. “Why would I hurt your feelings?”
With out missing a beat, I said, “Because you're a jerk.” He sighed and looked down at Shadow who was in his arms.
“I'm a fairy... I can't control it...” Shadow had fallen to sleep at an alarmingly short amount of time. He smiled. “Maybe you shouldn't be so easy to tease.” A growl came from my throat that surprised both of us, but Sparx just laughed. “Grr to you too, kitty.” He walked off to his room.
I sighed and looked around the living room. In the corner of the room there sat a shelf with three rows of movies and a TV on top. In front of it was a glass coffee table and a on the other side. Those things were the only things that looked normal. Decorations and charms hung on the walls or from the ceiling. A small table in front of a window held strange vases and flowers from Wicket.
A clock with a moving eye hung above the fire place. Sparx and I had the same one hanging from our doors in our room. 13 different wind chimes hung from the yellow-orange ceiling, 13 pictures hung on the red walls, and 13 exotic flowers were placed in colorful vases in the room.
13 was Sparx's favorite number and his family got to decorate. I didn't mind. It made everything comfortable. Welcoming.
His family gave us the house. They're filthy rich because they own 3 coffee shops, 2 bookstores and 2 plant shops and have owned them for over 100 years.
Ah! That reminds me, I thought. I have to go visit his mom. His mom and I were close and she always stood up for me when Sparx decided to pick on me.
I went in my room and got dressed. When I was done, I walked into Sparx's room where he and the kitten were sitting on the bed playing. Sparx looked up at me and tilted his head.
“Where you goin', Pet?” He asked.
“I'm going to Wicket to go tattle on you. I'm your mom that you're mean to me.” I laughed. He quickly stood up with a worried look on his face.
“Pet, please! Don't tell her that I was mean to you. She's going to come here and kick my a** if you do. Please, don't!” He begged.
“I know.” He became frantic.
“Pet! I wasn't that mean to you, was I? I'm sorry!” I laughed.
“Calm down. I'm only going to go say hi. I haven't seen her in a while so I thought that I should.” A wave of relief came over him and he sat back down on the bed. “I also wanted to see if I could find this guy that was following me all week.”
Sparx head snapped up. “Guy?”
“Yeah. There was this strange guy that was following me around all week. I wanted to see if I could find him.” He stood up again.
“Pet, I don't thing that's a good idea. If someone's following you around in Wicket it's usually not a good thing.” I patted his shoulder and laughed.
“Relax. He looked harmless.”
“That's what you said about the snake that you caught and it bit you!” His eyes began to bug out and I laughed again. “Maybe I should go with you.”
“No, no. It's fine. I can take care of myself,” I reassured him. “And besides. Who will look after Shadow if you leave?” He looked at Shadow with sympathetic eyes.
“True... But who will look after you?” He looked back at me with the same eyes.
“I will. Don't worry. I'll be home soon.” I left the house with out saying goodbye and before Sparx could say anything else.
When I got to Wicket I quickly found my way to the coffee shop that Sparx's mother worked at. I passed up Witches and Vampires walking and talking and Fairies playing tricks on the old Warlocks. The familiar shops and creatures made everything normal. Everything was right.
I stopped in the coffee shop and found his mother standing at the cash register, looking board. When she saw me walk through the door her face lit up.
“Petra! What're ya doing here? I haven't seen you in ages! How 've ya been, dear?” She ran up to me and hugged me.
“I came to see you, Mrs. Max. I've been fine. How about you? How's business?” Her smile always brightened a room causing everyone in it to smile.
“Please, Pet.” His whole family calls me that. “Call me Eve. 'Mrs. Max' makes me sound old. I'm only 146!” She looked around. “As for business...” A man hacked up a spit wad and spit it into his napkin. Eve twitched. “So gross,” she whispered. “It has it's ups and downs.” She sighed.
I laughed a bit.
“God, it seems as if Johnathan is keeping ya from me. Is he treating you well? Is he being mean again?” Now was my chance for payback.
“He's been so mean to me. Will you go beat him up for me?” I made a puppy-dog face. Eve gasped and hugged me.
“Oh, ya poor dear. Don't worry. No son of mine will get away with hurtin' my Petra's feelin's.” She let me go, rolled up her sleeves and was out the door. I waited for about 5 minutes and she was back.
She smiled when she saw me again.
“He's taken care of, dear. Just tell me the next time he picks on ya, 'kay?” She hugged me. “Well I have to get back to work. Lunch rush will be here soon. You take good care of yourself, you hear? Don't be a stranger.” She walked back behind the cash register and waved goodbye as I walked out of the shop.
Finding the guy that was following me for the past week was difficult. I couldn't find him at all and I had been looking for hours. I finally decided to give up and go home to see how bad Sparx got beat up.
At home, Sparx was in his room on his bed while Shadow sat on his back. He didn't seem bad until he sat up and looked at me. His lip was bleeding, there was a scratch on the side of his face and there were more scratched up and down his arms and legs. There were also a few bruises too.
He glared at me. “That was a very low trick you just pulled.”
“Pay back is a-”
“You got my mother to beat me up! You know I wouldn't raise a hand against her.” He sighed. “You better fix me.”
I laughed. “Alright. Just take your shirt off and roll up your pant legs.”
“No. You might enjoy that too much.” I raised and eyebrow and pulled out my cellphone, showing his mom's number on the screen. He quickly rolled up his pant legs and pulled off his shirt. I sat next to him and began to heal the scratches on his arms.
“Ya know... You wouldn't make too bad of a fairy,” he said. I looked up at him then looked back down at his arm.
“Why do you say that?”
“Well... You know how to play tricks. Even low ones.” I smiled. “You're pretty.” I stopped him before he could finish.
“Enough of that. You know I hate being called pretty.” He sighed.
“I don't see why,” he mumbled. I ignored him. “Did you find that guy you were looking for?”
“No. I couldn't find him.” I frowned and looked up at him. He was smiling.
“Good. You don't need to find a creep like that.”
“That's right. I live with one. I don't need another,” I scowled. He quickly dropped his smile and didn't say anything else. Take that, you jerk, I thought, feeling triumphant.
I was done by 8 o'clock and I was worn out. I leaned on Sparx and yawned. He laughed.
“Looks like it's your bed time, Pet.” He stood up and grabbed my arm, but I wouldn't move. He sighed, picking me up and taking me to my room.
When we got to the room he dropped me on my bed and plopped next to me, propping his head up with his hand. I rolled over and curled up around my pillow. He smiled.
“You must be really tired,” he said. I nodded closing my eyes. “Alright. I'll see you in the Mornin'.” He kissed me. This one was longer though, but I didn't move. He left and went to his room.
*******
“I'll kiss you over and over if you don't get up,” Sparx's soft voice whispered in my ear.
“You wouldn't dare,” I mumbled, closing my eyes tighter.
“Wanna bet, love.” He crawled on top of me and started to count down from 5. With each passing second, he leaned closer. I didn't have to open my eyes to figure it out. Right when he got to one I opened my eyes.
“Morning, Sparx,”I said. He smiled.
“Aw. I was hoping you wouldn't open your eyes. Oh well.” He pinned my shoulders down and begin kissing my cheeks over and over. I laughed.
“Sparx, stop! We have to get ready for school!” He kissed me on the lips and got off of the bed.
“Get up then,” he challenged. I sat up.
“I need to get changed. Get out.” He left the room. I got out of bed and changed into a black T-shirt and dark blue jeans.
Sparx walked into the room right when I zipped up my pants.
I glared a him. “Sparx. Don't you think you should knock first?”
“No. You were already done getting dressed.” He held up Shadow. “She wanted to say good morning.” I looked at the black ball of fuzz and it meowed. I kissed it's head.
“Aw, that's so cute! How are you doing this morning, Shadow?” It meowed again.
“Hey, how come you don't ask me that?”
“I don't need to.” I took Shadow from his hands and carried it to the kitchen. I set her on the floor next to her food bowl and grabbed a can of wet Cat food. After I opened it and dumped it in her food bowl, she hopped closer to it and began scarfing it down. “Jeez. It almost seems as if you haven't been feeding her,” I said to Sparx as he walked into the kitchen.
He looked down at the kitten and smiled. “It seems that way but she's been gaining weight.” I stood up and went to the pantry.
“Oh, really?” I grabbed a box of cereal and went the the counter. He nodded.
“Yeah. I don't know how much though.” He sat on the counter next to the cereal box as I grabbed a bowl and milk. “Are you going to try looking for that guys again?” I shrugged. “I don't think you should, Pet. Like I said: it's bad news when someone follows you around in Wicket.” I poured the milk and cereal into the bowl and grabbed a spoon.
“Hush now. I'll do as I please without your permission.” I took a bite of the cereal and sat at the new table. He put the milk and cereal away for me. “You didn't have to do that.”
“Sure I did. I need to try and find ways to get you not to go. I'm doing things for you in hope that you'll in turn do as I say and stay away from that guy.” I laughed.
“Nice try.” I went on eating my cereal. He sighed and plopped down across the table from me. “I miss the old table.”
“This one's better,” he mumbled.
“I know...”
I finished my cereal, brushed my teeth and went to my room to get my shoes. On my bed sat a letter with a flower. I opened the letter and it said:
Petra, Please don't go looking for that guy! I'm begging you! Sparx- Johnathan Max
I laughed. “Nice try, Sparx.”
I heard him curse in the other room.
On our way to school, Sparx kept looking at his feet. I sighed.
“What's wrong,” I asked. He looked up.
“You know what's wrong. I don't want you looking for him. What do I have to do to keep you from trying to look for him?”
“Relax, Sparx. I probably wont find him, okay? I barely remember what he looks like.” He relaxed only a little but looked back at his feet till we got to the school.
We split up like we always do and sat with our friends. My friends started asking me why I was gone and where I was and all that. I only told them that I was sick. School dragged and I had a lot of work I had to catch up with. Getting home doesn't even seem so exciting anymore!
Sparx kept staring at me and it was freaking me out. I remembered him saying that he only stared at someone when he thought something bad was going to happen to them. I stopped and looked at him.
“What, Sparx?” I walked a little worried. “What do you thing is going to happen to me?”
He looked down at his feet and kept walking.
“Sparx?” I called.
He shrugs.
“Sparx!”
He stops and slowly turns to me. “Pet.... I have no bloody clue. I'm confused right now...” He turns and keeps walking.
Even at home, he keeps watching me. “Sparx... Please tell me what's going to happen.”
“Pet, whatever it is, it might not even be bad!” He's frustrated.
Sparx walks up to me while I'm sitting on the kitchen counter and cups my face in his hands. He kisses my forehead and sighs.
“Please, don't worry about it.” He steps as close as he can, between my knees and pulls me slightly closer. It's extremely awkward and he can see my discomfort, but he only smiles and begins kissing me. I want him to stop because he's probably doing this as sort of payback but then I don't. Who would want him to stop? He's hot and this is awesome! I quickly stop my thoughts and try to pull away but he grabs the back of my head and keeps me there.
Sparx stops to breaths out, “I heard that so don't try to pull away,” then keeps kissing me. What do I do?! I've never done this! He looks me in the eyes and says, “Do what you think feels right.” The kissing continues, but it's starting to change. He's adding his green tongue!
He heard that and starts laughing, letting me go. I blush, feeling extremely stupid, and get off the counter.
