One time I'm walking through a park near the city, it's not that busy because it's so early. Anyway I get to a tunnel that goes under the road, as I walk through a man jumps out with a knife. "Right, empty yer pockets out. Now!" He screamed.
"Okay" I say fishing through my pockets. "So, what's your name?" I ask.
"Stop trying to characterize me and hurry up." He replied looking around nervously.
Eventually I brought the iPod out of my pocket; "this is all I got"
He looked a little hesitant about taking it. "What kind of music's on it?"
"Well, I've got David Bowie, The Beatles, Morrissey..."
"Who?"
"Yeah I've got The Who as well."
"Nah I think I'll leave it" He said. I started to put it back in my pocket.
"Not your sort of music?"
"Nah, look sorry about all this"
"Oh no, it's fine, well see ya."
I know right now you're probably saying; "What the hell Ben? Where's my guide about what to do if I kill my neighbour?" And getting ready to come and batter me or something, but that story (apart from being poorly written and completely made up) shows how personalized technology has become. 15-20 years ago computers were simply machines to make life easier in business and industry, but now they've got all you're information on, the thing you're reading this on probably has pictures of you on, maybe your bank details if you're old enough and mature enough to have money (I'm not).
You may be wondering if I'm going to go on a rant about technology or talk about robots. Well it's the latter.
How long will it be before they make robots? It'll be soon right? After all Honda made that robot. I imagine it'll be Apple that makes the first proper robot; it'll have all sorts of gizmo's and wondrous features.
And will probably want to kill you.
^Not pictured: Apple logo.
But we've all seen the movies, the robots will eventually try to kill us (The Matrix*) or try to gain they're freedom (AI). Surely they wouldn't make anything that dangerous, right?
Oh right.
In fact the British and American government have developed robots to help fight in Iraq. They’re only small spy robots but still, it’s a clear sign that tomorrows wars will be fought with robots, not people, although when fighting a war with little or no human casualties there’s little incentive to stop fighting, theonly strain would be on the economy.
But I’ve strayed a little from the point now.
What was the point? Ah yes, personalizing technology, that was an awful point.
Don’t worry next week will be a guide of some kind.
