The Big Secret

Jeffery had a secret. A most marvelous secret that no other rabbit could possibly know. Not even his mama or papa knew. Even fat old grandpa didn’t know. I’ll tell you the secret if you promise to read the rest of this amazing story and not tell anyone. Ok, here it is. His secret was he could change into human form.

It all started when Jeffery was hopping home from work. All of a sudden a huge human hand reached down and took hold of him. Jeffery struggled to get free but it was no use. So Jeffery closed his eyes and waited for it to end. Nothing happened. Jeffery could hear children yelling instead of his own little screams. “Do it! Do it! Do it!” the children yelled. “Do what?” Jeffery screamed. The children were starting to frighten him. Finally Jeffery opened one eye, and then the other, and gasped. What he saw was not a pretty sight. Two human lips were coming toward him fast. Jeffery closed his eyes and prayed a miracle would happen. He felt the child’s breath on him and fainted.

When Jeffery woke up he was in human form! The legs, arms, head and everything. He saw no rabbit tail on his back. The white fluffy fur on his stomach had all disappeared. Jeffery screamed, “what happened to me!” To him the human language sounded like gibberish. Now he was even more frightened. Jeffery tried to run like the humans so he could find his home. But it wasn’t much use. His legs were only fit for hopping. Hopping! That’s it, Jeffery would hop back to his home, which would be much faster. Jeffery hopped once. Much faster he thought. He hopped again. And suddenly he felt himself shrinking into his normal self. “Why that feels much more like it.” He gasped again as he noticed his rabbit tongue was back. He quickly examined himself. He had all the right things for a bunny. Maybe it had all been a big scary dream, but after a while he shook his head in disagreement. It had to be true. His tiny rabbit brain would have never come up with it all by itself. Just to make sure it wasn’t a dream Jeffery hobbled to the left standing on his hindquarters. Then he hobbled to the right and sure enough, he felt himself change. To Jeffery it felt like the wind was blowing inside him. “Ohh” he said after a relentless moment of curiosity. “That was quiet strange.” He hopped twice and went on his way as a rabbit back to his burrow. That day Jeffery knew he had found a most marvelous secret that would be kept a secret until the time was right.

So during the years Jeffery kept his secret to himself. He learned that while in human form he couldn’t survive on grass and water. It was actually uncommon for humans to eat grass. “But it comes from mother earth!” Jeffery had once regretfully said this one night on the open streets of Ohio. All he had gotten back was a not so friendly punch in the face. Just to let you know Jeffery never went back to Ohio again. Jeffery had learned that the human food was meat. Yuck was the only word in Jeffery’s mind every night he ate it. “Why can’t all humans live off of carrots or something that doesn’t involve killing something.” This was one of his regular sentences at the dining table.

Jeffery also used his secret to go on adventures far away from the burrow. Once he even went up to space as an astronaut to have milk and cookies with Darth Vader and Yoda.

One day while Jeffery was wobbling on his hindquarters, trying to turn into a human to go on some adventures, Hermy, his little brother hopped into Jeffery’s room to tell him that mama was making dinner. Jeffery who had very bad hearing for a rabbit didn’t notice and kept wobbling away till his human body was truly transformed. Hermy, who was watching his big brother in amazement transform, didn’t notice that a giant human foot was coming down to squash him.

Now on a plane
ride to Taiwan, Jeffery took his shoes off and noticed a baby rabbit squished onto the heel. Jeffery stared at the rabbit in amazement of what a monster he had become. “How could have squished me baby brother?” he thought in a dazed mode. It was only after Jeffery got off the plain that he came back to his normal self. Quickly he put his shoe with his brother on it in his backpack and rented a car that drove all the way to Ireland. There he hopped once, and then twice, and hopped off to his family to tell them his regretful story.

“I’m sorry!” he wailed to his family who was sitting dazed on a piece of lettuce. “I’ll never change back into human form again! I’m so, so sorry! Is there anything we can do about it? There has to be! Has to!” He repeated this all night until finally his exhaustion won over him and he tumbled to the ground weeping. A few minutes later, which felt like hours to the poor rabbit family, grandpa said, “well why don’t yawl go darn back, and show us where my darn little grandson is!” Grandpa was a Texan rabbit who never liked the Irish tone. After another few death taking minutes Jeffery’s family nodded in agreement. “Oh all right, I’ll take you there, but I’m warning you, it won’t be a pretty sight.

And with that Jeffery started to wobble around on his hindquarters till he was human and extended a hand out to his family. Slowly, and I mean very slowly, the family of rabbits hopped on to Jeffery’s body which started trotting off into the dark night. They finally reached Jeffery’s untouched backpack and slid off their human chaperon. After a couple hops Jeffery was in rabbit shape again prying open the zipper with his teeth. He dragged the shoe out of the backpack and took it to his mother. “ My oh my,” his mother said weakly. She took a spatula out of her pocket and started scrapping little Hermy off the bottom of Jeffery’s shoe.

Later in the early morning everyone was eager to see the sleeping Hermy who had just recently been fully scraped off open his eyes to the new day. After a couple moments Hermy started to twitch. Then he opened his eyes one at a time. “I’m alive,” he said in an amusing tone. “I didn’t die when my maniac brother stepped on me.” “I’m sorry Hermy.” Jeffery said. “ It will never happen again I promise.”

And that promise was kept until Jeffery died of old age. So Jeffery never again turned into a human and he never kept his secrets secret.
