This is a poem written by my cousin for her grandmother (my great aunt) who recently passed away...
Hello, Gramma Z.
As my plane soars up into the sun,
I feel you up here with me;
Maybe floating on a cloud beside me,
Peeking through my window,
Flitting along the wind.
I was not there when you left us,
When you drifted from your body,
From your Temple,
As Aunt Laurie sweetly put it.
I was not there when your daughter cried for you
As your soul slipped away that night,
The night your son whispered his last words to you,
And placed his final tender kisses
On your cheeks.
I heard of this last gentle night
From your granddaughter,
My sister,
After she watched a little boy and a little girl
Lose their Mom,
And a sister
Lose her beloved best friend.
I like to think this is my goodbye,
Now,
Up here in the clouds,
Up here where no one monitors your sodium intake,
Or catches you sneaking chocolate
From the hidden stash in your bedside table;
Up here where the soft breeze doesn't make you nauseous,
But rather dizzy
With joy.
As I peek through the clouds,
And watch Dallas slip away beneath me,
I am happy.
My home is there.
It was bittersweet to share my birthday with you today.
I see bits of you in my father,
And I see bits of my father in me.
Sometimes I think of how sick you used to be,
And of how sad you could get,
And perhaps now I understand: You knew
It was time.
You looked around you and saw
What a long life you'd had,
And what beautiful children it brought.
You were always a free bird and you were being caged
By old age,
And by the end
Of a well lived life.
It was time to leave your legacy of stubbornness and courage,
Orneriness and love;
You fought hard for this life,
And you were tired.
So today, on my birthday,
I thank you;
Thank you for making a beautiful son,
Who gave me life;
And I hope you are up here
In the clouds
Singing
And dancing
And lauging
At your own jokes,
And watching over us all.
