This pretty little rant isn't directed at anyone in particular, but rather a type of ignorace. This time it's an ignorance towards nursing. This all started when a few of my friends came over for a weekend. For some reason we got on the topic of people who graduated with us and what they were planning to do.
One of my friends, Marley, noted that this one girl {who isn't all that bright, rather slow and doesn't understand things} was going to school to become a nurse. I snorted because, frankly, I would never want this girl to be anywhere near the sick.
Marley noted furiously a second later, "I think she'd be a good nurse, because all it really is, is doing stuff in a specific order. And all they would have to do is tell her what to do. It wouldn't be too hard." Wow. Let's stop right here. Read that again. According to Marley, nursing is just doing stuff in a specific order and nothing else. What? Run that by be again, please.
I was insulted for many reasons. I was insulted for the nurses and the nursing practice, my mother {who is a registered RN} and Marley's mother {who is currently getting her doctrates in nursing}. I instantly lit in to her and told her that nursing wasn't "just doing thing in a specific order." Now, I'll give Marley some credit as this girl does do things fine as long as she's given specific orders, but being a nursing isn't that!
Nursing is taking care of the sick and elderly. You have to know the human body inside and out, you need to memorize medications, their effects and how much a proper dosage is. You need to know how handle a paniced situations. Frankly, when Marley said that, she pissed me off. I love her dearly, I really do.
So, take this as learning a lesson, before you say something, think about it first. You might not know who'll you'll piss off.
