Fleaters (Flesh Eaters)
A story I've been working on.
Chapter 2 The Insomniac Night
Vincent Cera and Diana Carter were tagging along at us, together that make us four in numbers. They insisted that we should rest at the stream we passed by after an hour of running, walking, running then walking again. I couldn't resist because I'm exhausted as they have been. We sat at the edge of the stream and like the cold running waters of the stream; a very clear thought slapped my face. We cannot go back, back to the school, what happened there is beyond our understanding. When I say "beyond our understanding" even Mr. Stan doesn't know what to say about it. Well an English teacher is an English teacher. Not a Psychic, not a Chemist, Oh well, we even have nothing to blabber about those Fleaters.

The sun is simply setting off the sky. We decided to call it a day, we’re all exhausted and the city nearest to us right now, 15 kilometers. A thankfully sigh, this forest we’re in are popular for camping, so there’s no much as about predators in here, and tonight there’s no even single soul present here besides us four.

We are to camp ourselves (not even a camp to call with) near the stream and started to make a fire (luckily we know how to start a fire with only wood sticks). We take turns on washing ourselves with the nearby stream. There’s not much to say, well Vince started to throw a conversation, but eventually ended as easily as all of his attempts.

“Flynn”, Diana called. I turned once to Diana.

“Yeah?” She was wearing a floral dress that covers her bottle-shaped body until it only shows the pinkish skin of her legs. What a foolish dress, but what a nice body, I thought.

“Are you sure of staying up?” She asked. We managed to held a fashionly business meeting a while ago on who’s gonna stay up to be the guard, anytime I don’t know, that those activated students may end up here and “kill” us all. Hope that doesn’t happen!

“Of course, I’m sure of it. There’s nothing wrong about it, I volunteered myself. And I’m sure that this insomnia I have will keep me up, like those energized drink.”

“Well, you say so, but wake us up if there’s wrong, okay? Good night.” She’s that so persistent, we held a meeting so that everyone should have agreed, and now look at this; she’s asking me if I’m sure about it.

The dark curtains of the night hung silently at the very night sky, brilliant stars were decorated neatly at it, the hoot of the howls and the shrill chirping of crickets produces a balanced harmony, a charming sound.

I find it funny how Mr. Stan sleeps, snoring in an empty air then pitching a high note, again and again. I wonder if he knows about it. I keep throwing twigs at the fire we had made, sparks flew as twigs made a crackling sound and adding up the heat around us, thankfully again that it’s not that cold as yesterday night, all covered with thick blankets but still the coldness is persistent as Diana.

The Xander Bell University is like a home to us, besides our personal home. Just thinking of my home, a room within reach inside my heart partially aches, I wonder how they’re doing back home. My mother is so eager to put me in this University; she said it’s one of the finest schools. But I think she’s just a bit exaggerated over it. She always said that if I got good marks in here after graduating, I can have a peaceful and a respectful job. But I do not want to work for money; I want money to work for me. Where did I read that? I’m becoming more obsessed with books.

Speaking of books, I desperately need one right now, they’ll calm me down, like the world vanishes as I held books, the scent of it can be so addic…

“Aaaaaah!” A feminine scream echoed through the woods that, that really awakened and made the group to sit upright. A continuous scream from the girl, then clashes of feet running through the forest, but the serious current running from the stream sealed it. Diana and Vincent tried to put out the fire but didn’t succeed. In just a minute, figures materialized through the thick trees. Something in me felt the urge to call to them, but Mr. Stan eventually had shared my urge as I have.

He called for them, a big and loud call “Hey!” They turned their heads at the same time, they stop for a moment thinking if they should go here, and then they are now here. Right in front of us. I counted three, two guys and a girl.

“We should run, quickly, there’s more of them there.” He points at the direction they have come. His voice were deep but by the sound of it he’s scared.

“Why? What is it?” Diana asked. But my instincts tells me that that “them” are those savages, the zombies, the activated, my so called Fleaters.

The girl beside the guy who spoke, was sobbing lightly, her hoarse voice and some emotion kicked in, “El..Elena..was bitten..she screamed and then I don’t know what really happened!” then she really cried now, hard sobs were escaping her chest.

“It’s okay Faye, we will get out of here, I promise.” Faye, I guess, is the sobbing girl.

“I guess we should get out of here.” I finally have my throat again. “I think we can get on the road, by east, ‘cause we headed straight south, right Mr. Stan? When we entered the forest it’s south but we can hit the road by the first streaks of light of the morning, if we move now.” I’m surprised by the intelligent voice that escaped my mouth. Mr. Stan just nodded.
