Warrior
Keren stripped the helmet from her head, sucking in a deep breath through her nostrils. The scents of dust and sweat mingled with meadowsweet and the crisp air of the upper mountain meadow in which she stood. She reached out a hand and let her partner haul her to her feet. "Nice move," she said, grudgingly. "You'll have to teach me that one sometime." The pair hung up their practice weapons and fell into step beside one another as they left the ring and headed for the barracks, to change and clean up before supper.
Pausing on the lip of the rise, Keren stared out over the vista below. It was breathtaking - the greens and golds of the valley fields, stretching out to the line of silver surf just at the limit of the horizon. The jagged teeth of the mountain bit at the sky, stretching away at either hand, and the light of the sunset gilded their snowy caps. The warrior woman inhaled deeply with satisfaction, and turned back to her guardpost.
A shouted warning broke the spell, cut off in a gurgling cry. Keren exchanged a look with her partner and they took off, charging towards the commotion. Battle!!
