Let me start this entry by saying how appreciative I am of every single law enforcement officer there is out there. They put their lives on the line every single day, despite whatever story they hear about an officer being shot, wounded, or even killed. Officers are courageous people that go above and beyond regular society. And even though I don't want to die, I can't wait for my opportunity to get out there and join them.
So what brought this on? An officer here in Draper, Utah was shot and killed early Sunday morning. I won't say his name here, in respect of his family, but just know that he must have been a damn good person, because his community put up memorials in his memory.
I'm posting this because it troubles me to know that any one of my law enforcement friends could be murdered at any given moment... I've never really had to deal with a death of a loved one before. I mean yes, I've had family die, but distant family. Very distant family. So I don't know the full effect of it.
I know for a fact... That one day I will hear an officer call out on his/her radio that he/she has been shot. And I can only imagine what will be racing through my mind as I race to his/her aid. I hope that this will never happen, but I know it will.
But you know what else bugs me? Is that I know for a fact... That even though that man shot the officer... That exact officer would have put himself between the man, and gunfire. And despite how honorable this man was, he was still shot for no reason, with no chance to defend himself.
Rest in Peace Sgt. D. J. End of Watch: 9/01/2013 We'll take it from here.
-Edit (09.05.2013) I'm going to his funeral tomorrow morning. I may write about what it was like. And to be honest, this is the first funeral I'll have attended in my entire life, so I have no idea what it will be like.
