Prologue

The grandfather clock in the small, yet comfortable living room chimed twelve times. It was midnight and Asawa was still wide awake. For the last week or so she had been unable to sleep. Strange visions brimming with unfamiliar faces and scenery plagued her at night. It had happened again, jostling her from her bed and blanketing her in cold sweat and violent shivers.

She let out a exhausted sigh and stood to go turn the kettle off in the kitchen, it had been screaming at her for several minutes trying to get her attention; but Asawa, stuck in thoughts, hadn't paid it any heed. Her right index finger pressed down on the power button and it gave a small beep in repsonse to the pressure she applied to it. Pouring herself a cup of vanilla flavoured tea, Asawa retired to the sofa and sat in the pitch darkness of her living room; her eyes gazing out the window into the endless night.

She had nearly slipped into a daze when a booming crash echoed from outside. It startled her so much that her mug flew from her hands and landed in pieces spilling its contents on Asawa's cherrywood floors. Her heart raced as she stood and cautiously made her way towards her front door. Her mind was speeding as fast as her heart, but in all different directions. What if it was a burgler, or a even worse..that rapist that just escaped from prison...or what if.. Her brain came screeching to a halt and the devious smile that burned against the ebony of her dreams flashed flooded her imagination....or that demon...my inner demon...
Now at the door, whatever was outside, be it an alley cat or a monster, had gone silent. Asawa, hardly owning anything at all to protect herself was 'armed' with a honing steel and slowly opened the door to her front patio. It creeked eerily and the sound was enough to send a rush of chills down her spine. An icy blast of night air met her as she tenderly stepped out to face the cause of the disturbance...but Asawa found nothing in her wake. Though, her heart still pounded and she could have sworn she saw a shadow flicker past her sight, Asawa returned to the safety of her home and locked the door once inside.

The clock struck 1AM, and Asawa blinked up at it in a suspicious confusion- hadn't it been midnight mere moments ago? With another sigh, she cleaned up the broken china cup and the tea that had washed-out all over the floor. Asawa then, returned back up to her bedroom and flopped down on her bed in a disheveled maner. The same mischievious smile mingled with the darkness behind her eye lids and she began to fade into the closest state she could consider sleep...

....A surreality that only she had the keys to unlocking.
