The Kaufman Guide To:

Chocobo Inbreeding

One of the “Ultimate Side-quests” of Final Fantasy VII is the Golden Chocobo. This mythical creature can be bred with the proper method, but it’s so hard to know the perfect way to do it. Some don’t even know where to actually begin! Thanks to the Kaufman Guide to Chocobo Inbreeding the steps to getting a Golden Chocobo are simplified and written here. Follow the steps and have a little patience, and soon enough you’ll be riding off to get your Knights of the Round Summon Materia.

Part 1

The first thing to remember is that you’ll need a few things to even begin. First, around 60,000+ gil to begin with. This is VERY important, and remember that later you’ll need even more. Then you’ll also need the Highwind for transportation, as it is quick, easy, and allows you the access to the Northern continent that you need. Obviously you will need some type of greens and Chocobo Lure materia, which you should have regardless. I’d also suggest having a Gold Pass to the Golden Saucer, as you’ll be running in and out of it quite often. It’s a lot to pay up front, but it may end up being worth it for you in the end. Along with these you will need to head to the northern continent with the highwind to the area near the life stream and excavation site and, upon finding the big red lizards, steal three “Carob Nuts.” Head also to the Goblin Island, the slender island located in the north-western sea on the map, and steal a “Zeio Nut” from a goblin. Once that’s all done you’re just about ready to start your Chocobo hunt!

Part 2

Head to the Chocobo Stables and go into the house. Talk to the man within and purchase all six Chocobo stables (You’ll need them to make this easier.) It’ll cost exactly 60,000 gil, so make sure you have more than that on you. Once this is done head out, hop into the Highwind, and head to the northern continent. Near one of the western parts near the icicle inn is a single grassy area where you can land the Highwind. Do so and head west from there along the snow to the Chocobo tracks, and begin catching as many Chocobo as you can. When you dismount send them back to the stables. When you’ve finished this head back to the Chocobo farm and, going into the barn, ask about moving the Chocobo. Your objective here is to have two WONDERFUL Chocobo, one male and one female. It’s easy to tell as they will be sprinting and the text will say “This is a…wonderful Chocobo!” Remember to nab one male and one female, and put them in the stables. The others you can release.

Now that you have a male and female wonderful Chocobo it’s time for the fun part! Go out onto the field and save your game so that, in case you need to, you can reset and start off right outside. Talk to the man with all the options about chocobos in the barn and select “Mating Chocobos.” Select the two you have and, when asked if you want to mate them, select “Go Ahead.” After this, when asked what “Nut” to give them, select the Carob nut. Confirm it and then wait for the screen to go black, the tune to hit, and the sound of a Chocobo. Your new Chocobo will show up on-screen. You want to get a green Chocobo of any gender. (Apparently it’s easier to get a green first.) If successful name it, save your game, and then go level up, train, or accomplish something. (Your chocobos won’t be able to breed again for awhile.) If not, press all four shoulder buttons and start and select to “soft” reset the game, reload your save, and try again. As annoying as this may seem this is the part where your patience comes into play.

After you’ve wasted time and return to the stables to find that you can breed your first two Chocobo again save once again outside and then enter. Once again mate the first two and use a Carob nut. You will now want a blue Chocobo of the opposite gender of your green. (IE; You have a female green Chocobo. You’ll want a male blue.) Use the same method to acquire the blue Chocobo as you did the green. Remember, patience. While it may seem that you’ll get the same result all the time, believe it or not it changes and, with a little luck, you could have what you want immediately. Once you have a blue Chocobo it’s time to go out and waste more time!

Part 3

After wasting enough time so that your blue and green chocobos have matured enough to mate, head back to the stable and, once again, save outside and head in. Your objective now is to successfully mate the Blue and Green chocobos and end up with a Black Chocobo. This may or may not take a lot of attempts, though it took me very few. Patience is, once again, the key. The carob nut is used again for this, and no worries about running out once you get the black Chocobo. You won’t need anymore Carob nuts from that point on.

Once you have a black Chocobo note its gender and head out to the Highwind, hop in, and head to the northern continent. Look for a small home nestled between some mountains with a patch of green to land on around it an then snow the rest of the way about. Land and head inside to meet the Chocobo sage. Ask to buy something and purchase 40 Sylkis greens. (They are the most expensive ones, so if you need to get more money. Trust me when I say this is a very important part of the process.)

Head back to the stables and ask about feeding Chocobos. Feed twenty of the greens to your black Chocobo and then, depending on the gender of your black, feed the last twenty to the wonderful Chocobo of the opposite gender of your black. This will greatly increase their stamina, speed, and intelligence. Head out and then to the Golden Saucer. Go to the Chocobo section and, talking to Ester, register and race the chocobos you fed the greens to. Thanks to the sylkis greens and a trick, you’ll be able to breeze through. When racing make sure to hold all four shoulder buttons (A trick that replenishes your chocobo’s stamina) and just pound on the accelerate button (Square, I believe.) You’ll have enough speed and stamina to breeze through almost all ranks up until A, which you may have difficulty on. Your objective is to get the two Chocobo to an “S” rank.

Part 4

Now that you have a wonderful, S-Ranked Chocobo and an S-Ranked black Chocobo you are ready to move to the final step! Head back to the stables, save outside, and then head in. Choose to mate the two S-Ranked Chocobo, and use the “Zeio Nut” you acquired. Thanks to having both a wonderful Chocobo and both as S-Rank, your chances of getting a Golden Chocobo are increased. That doesn’t mean, however, that your first few tries will always yield one. Patience, once again. After a time you’ll get a Chocobo that looks a golden orange color. Trust me, you’ll notice that it’s golden. That is your golden Chocobo, and now you can ride all around land, mountains, rivers, and the ocean!
