A Shattered Reflection
Prologue
The faint rustling of the trees could be heard as a cloaked figure stepped onto the stone pathway. The bright sun shone luminously around the area. The tall figure’s footsteps echoed with each step. Small sparrows flew all around, feathers falling everywhere. Arriving at a large fountain, the cloaked figure slowly halted. In the middle of the stone fountain was a tall statue, an elegant looking woman holding a small mirror. Two pale hands reached up to the hood and pulled it down, revealing a woman’s face as it stared into the mirror. Her dark eyes remained unwavering as she whispered something-
Panting, Eliza woke up, startled. The moon shone through her bedroom window as she looked around. She sighed deeply and pulled back her long brown hair behind her ear. Knowing she wouldn’t be able to go back to sleep, Eliza got up and quietly walked to the kitchen. She sat down on the dining table with a glass cup in her hand. Her pale hand shook slightly as she drank. That’s the fifth time I’ve had that dream..
“It’s four o’clock in the morning, Liz. Why are you up now?”
Eliza jumped, startled, the glass cup slipped and shattered on the hard floor.
A tall, dark haired boy flinched at the sound of the broken glass and looked up at the ceiling. After a moment or two of silence, he sighed in relief, “You almost woke everyone up!” He bent down to collect the pieces of glass.
Eliza scowled and helped pick up the pieces, “Kimura! Don’t scare me like that in the middle of the night!”
Kimura hissed, “You’re the one who woke me up in the first place.” He got up and threw out the glass, “Come on, we got school tomorrow.”
Rolling her eyes, Eliza followed her older brother up the stairs and went to her room. She laid on the soft bed and stared at the ceiling. Frowning, she remembered the woman’s face under the dark hood, a painful feeling strained at her heart. Eliza tried to shake the feeling off and turned to her side. Her eyelids felt heavy as she started to fall asleep slowly.
