The effectiveness of the clone forces' armored vehicles at the Battle of Geonosis was enough to give the strategists of the Confederacy pause. Their larger tanksmashing vehicles became targets for Republic gunships, and many of their hailfire droids were destroyed before they could even sight the approaching walkers. The interim answer was to equip the harder-to-hit infantry with armor-piercing weaponry.

The cost-conscious Techno Union devised a cheap but effective mass-produced weapon, the E-60R missile launcher, manufactured by Baktoid Armor Workshop. The weapon is lightweight enough to be carried by the spindly battle droid infantry, and can carry rockets of varying payloads.

In a cost-cutting effort, early designs that called for direct targeting interfaces were scrapped, and instead replaced by surplus viewfinding scopes. As such, battle droids must sight their targets by actually peering down the scope. They have become adept at targeting the large walkers and tanks have even managed to swat unsuspecting gunships out the air. Clone pilots have learned to fear the presence of E-60R-equipped battle droids on the field.
