~ Forest of Angels Chapter 6: Ileno Returns Section 14
"Ileno!” Tsano shouted. The girl ran to Tsano and hugged him around the waist. Tsano hugged her back. “Brother…” “Ileno—How—How did you survive?” He marveled. “How on Earth did you make it out of that fire?” Ileno looked up at Tsano’s face, smiling. “Momma saved me.” She said. “And Papa. “When the fire happened, I remember crying for Momma and Papa. You didn’t move when a branch fell on your head. Momma and Papa came with a scary guy…” Orka. Tsano thought. “…Who took you away. Then Mama and Papa took me to this tree stump and left me there, and I didn’t get burned, not a single bit, Brother. Not a single bit!” Tsano stared down at her. “How did you survive, though, without food or water? Who took care of you?” Tsano hesitated. He almost asked, “Where’s Mom and Dad…?” but he couldn’t bring himself to do it. Something inside him wanted to be sure, but he knew they were dead. Why couldn't they have saved themselves, too? Ileno looked like she was thinking hard. “I…don’t know, Brother.” She told him. “I fell asleep. Then, I just woke up a little bit ago with my wings all big enough to fly and with my clothes all big, too.” She told him. “I must have just been sleepy-weeping.” Tsano took back tears. Crying wasn’t very manly, he told himself, but…Ileno…was back… Tsano hugged her tight, and Ileno patted him on the back. “I’m just…so glad…I found you…” Tsano whispered, feeling tears coming on. “I’d…I thought I’d lost you.” “Don’t cry, Brother. Don’t be sad.” “No, Ileno…I’m happy.” There was a pause as Tsano held his little sister tight. He, realizing what he was doing, let go and wiped his eyes on the back of his sleeve, clearing his throat. Tao Chi was smiling from the corner, a bit sadly. That reminded her of her own little sister in a way, her poor sister who’d been hospitalized all her life, who knew nothing of the way Karasu had killed their parents. She pushed the thought from her mind. Her memories of her little sister were too painful. Tsano stood up. “I’m sorry, Tao Chi.” He told her, sniffing and coughing. “This is my sister, Ileno.” Ileno bowed slightly, beaming. “That’s fine, uh…” She darted around for something else to say. “Tsano, should we escape now?” She asked him. “I…kind of want to get back to Uri.” She lied. Tsano felt Ileno holding his hand. He glanced down at her. “How will we get out once we turn back into eight-year-olds…?” He wondered aloud. “And, wouldn’t Ileno turn back into an infant?” He asked. Tao Chi shrugged. “I know a bit of magic.” She declared. “If we play our cards right, we’ll be able to get out of this cursed Forest place.” Tsano grinned. “Yeah, let’s try.” Somehow, however, he felt uneasy, like something was going to go horribly wrong…
