Neurological Sepsis
A brief description. Something to fill in. Later.
Arrogance
There are a number of things to dislike about ED. Little things, for starters, like the increased population over it's subforums. It's a statistical reality with a forum as large as Gaia, and makes community forming difficult. The large number of pointless threads, for another. The "i did something crazy today" talking about random acts of liberal vandalism, or the scam notification thread, or the "what would you do if..." threads, or Holocaust denial, and threads asking for opinions. It's enough to drive a man batshit. And then there are the morons with gigantic signatures. Good Mod, some of them get defensive. Like this fella from five minutes ago:

Quote:
[09:24] we5leyz: are you a moderator?
[09:24] *** Auto-response sent to we5leyz: Recharging neurological batteries. Give me a few hours.
[09:24] Westonian01: No, but I can put you in touch with one if you like.
[09:25] we5leyz: i have talked to many mods
[09:25] we5leyz: none of them has ever complained about it
[09:25] we5leyz: are you on 56k?
[09:25] Westonian01: That's nice. Your sig violates the Terms of Service.
[09:25] we5leyz: damn dude chill
[09:25] we5leyz: losen those panties
[09:26] Westonian01: neutral
[09:26] we5leyz: why you gotta go around startin s**t for?
[09:26] we5leyz: no one has every complained
[09:26] we5leyz: it doesn't bother anyone, it looks cool
[09:26] we5leyz: if you got something against me, just ask me for my address
[09:26] we5leyz: take care of this like men
[09:26] Westonian01: It's six-tenths of a megabyte. Do you know how long that takes to download on 56k?
[09:26] we5leyz: well are you on 56k?
[09:26] we5leyz: majorty isn't on 56k anymore
[09:27] Westonian01: Do you have statistical data on that?
[09:27] we5leyz: i have yet have a complaint from anyone dialup or no dialup
[09:27] Westonian01: 75% of the US is on dialup.
[09:27] we5leyz: http://www.nwfusion.com/net.worker/news/2004/0818netrabroad.html?net&code=nlnetflash520
[09:27] Westonian01: Wooo, conflicting data. Interesting.
[09:27] we5leyz: dialup is the past dude
[09:28] we5leyz: go get a life man
[09:28] Westonian01: Yes, but people still use it.
[09:28] we5leyz: no one just goes around startin s**t unless they dont got issue s of their own
[09:28] we5leyz: like you
[09:28] Westonian01: All other issues aside, it violates the Terms of Service.

I don't understand why people think they can freely violate the contract that they accepted when they joined Gaia. The little checkbox is there for a reason: Even if they haven't read the Terms of Service, they are still bound by them. But this is getting off the topic.

The number one reason I'm not fond of ED: The worship of intelligence. More specifically, the wry form of intelligence frequently found in satire. Most posts of this type, the kind that take an individual down a few notches in a witty, wordy, properly formatted and grammaticized post, are followed up with "What he said" and "Dude, you got totally owned" and another three or four posts repeating similar sentiments. It's spam. Clutter. A number of posts that do nothing but distract from the topic. Large fanclubs moving from thread to thread trying to catch a glimpse of their various idols and, when they do, trying to be the first one to praise their genius. stressed

This is, I think, a symptom of a larger problem. Satire is not a valid discussion method because it is inherently negative. It's attacking something rather than building it up. And if there's one thing that people like, it's a fight. They flock to the sight of blood, be it real or virtual. And that is my problem with ED.

I'm sure that the quieter half of ED agrees with almost everything you said. For those of us who enjoy just reading people's posts and such, it can get pretty pointless to watch ED.

While I agree with you on all points, the simple fact is that people will sleep with witty people. People don't sleep with smart and constructive people. Thus, the ED is like a testing ground for conversational topics that will get us laid later in life.

I do agree, however. I much prefer the times when I could actually read Karashebi's threads and derive useful information. For that matter, I liked it when the threads weren't all related to Christianity and homosexuality and Satanism, or the attention whores thereof. That said, I do realize that I myself am part of the problem, but I'm hypocritical too, so it's all good.

Maybe we should shun the stupid people?

Eh. A large part of me is all in favor of shunning stupid people, but there's still that nagging little part that reminds me that smart people come from somewhere. Some can be reformed. However small the number, even if it's just a few, only an insignificant fraction of them, if they could be converted from stupid people to smart people it'd be worth it.

I dunno. Maybe they'll learn from exposure or osmosis or something. Set 'em in front of the tube long enough and the image'll burn into their retinas. *shrug*

I just wanted to say Westonian, Thank you for correcting me earlier today on my way of use with my time on my first ever Topic on the ED board today and I see you feel more strongly about it then it seemed. stare

Aw, Zeldrea, you were in M&R. There's a huge difference between the two. wink

I do feel strongly about M&R. It's a good place to find good discussion. When repeat pointless topics are posted by people who are too self-righteous to read the rules for the subforum, I have a slight tendency to get a little testy.

Wow, there's still people going around worshipping some of the ED Regulars?
