The newspaper article me *Jessica* and Justine were in...
Incase u didn't know this already Justine is one of my best friends, we've been singing since we met eachother which was 5 years ago. Like it said in the ast journal entry, we made a BIG talent show and here's the article we were in.
There are no phones in heaven, there are angels in the desert and sharing shoelaces is a true sign of friendship.
These are the lessons garnered from auditions for the upcoming Surprise Teen Talent Show.
About 14 acts tried out Friday to make the main event, the first of its kind for the growing city. The Community & Recreation Services Department wanted more teen-driven activities in the city, and a display of talents seemed like a strong draw, show supervisor Holly Brouwer said. advertisement
The main show, taking place Feb. 15 at Willow Canyon High School, will consist of a lot of singing and some dancing and instrumentals.
Competition will be intense, Brouwer said.
Destinee Quinn strolled up to the mike Friday with her guitar hung off her shoulders on a pink, fluffy strap. The 14-year-old belted out her own song, No Phones in Heaven, about the recent loss of her uncle.
"It was amazing," said Brouwer, who screened auditions, but will not be judging the main event.
Afterwards, Destinee described her music as "contemporary Christian, country-folkish."
"I'm not really sure what I am," she said.
Shortly after Destinee's song, Angels of the Desert took the mike. Cousins Junior Becerra, on electric guitar, and Michael Garcia, on drums, practically blasted the judges through the wall of Countryside Recreation Center.
"It was loud," judges agreed afterward.
The White Stripes-inspired teens settled on calling themselves Angels of the Desert while on the phone. While Michael lobbied for Demons of the Desert, they chose heaven over hell.
"I don't like demons," Junior explained.
Judges offered advice throughout the auditions to better prepare the hopefuls. Some needed to learn their songs, some needed a simple boost of confidence and others admittedly needed a lot more practice.
Although they were nervous, Justine Owens, 14 and Jessica Gregory, 13, won the judges over with friendship. The two teens sang When You Believe, a duet made famous by Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston. They also wore shoes with mismatched shoelaces because each had traded one with the other.
"So are you best friends?" Brouwer asked, and both girls nodded.
"I can tell by the laces," she said.
Afterwards, Justine said this would mark their biggest talent competition to date.
"We don't know if we can make it big, but we believe we can make something," she said.
